Biogr.condylis 1 English CV.condylis/kondyli I was born in Athens and after I moved to Belgium. I studied philologies romanes, and philologies et hirtoire orientales. My Ph.D. dissertation deals with the issue of ArabGreek translations during the Middle Ages. I have worked for the Centre de Philosophie Arabe (Institut Superieu de Philosophie), the Institut Orientaliste de l’Université Catholique de Louvain, the Fonds National de la Recherche Scientifique de Belgique, the “Le Museon” journal, which is specialized in philologies orientales, the European School I, all located in Belgium. In Greece I have worked for the Institut Français d’Athens and in the private secondary level education. Since 1996, I am member of the teaching and research staff of Athens University, module ‘Arabist: classical literature and civilizationculture’. Arabic studies, as a course of “free choice” in the Humanities Department, has two main targets: 1) to provide basic scientific knowledge to the students who will work after their graduation in the secondary level education, and 2) to provide a solid basis to the students who will follow postgraduate studies basically abroad, since the Arabic studies in Greece lack this perspective. Particularly in the Department of Turkish Studies, the course is aiming at offering basic knowledge for the understanding of the Turkish world. Courses I. II. III. Arabic Civilization II (70037): Umayyad and Abbasid Caliphate; The Arabs in Mediterranean before the Ottomans; Ideological currents; Islam and other religions in the Arab world; The phenomenon of translation in the east and west of the Arab world; Various forms of art; Art of Life and transgender relationships, etc. Elements of Arabic Literature (70037): historical approach of the Arabic literature from the preIslamic era to the contemporary avantgarde. V. 4 Grammatology: issues of Arabic Literature and Culture (70039): Features themes concerning the Arabic civilization and culture through commentaries on Arabic sources; Medieval translations into Arabic; Nonfigurative art and calligraphy; Sufism and politics; Christian Arabic sources; Commentary on the Koran, etc. The course emphasizes each of the above mentioned issues every year and discusses how they are presented in the international and Arabic literature and bibliography. The choice of the issue is made on the basis of students’ and professor’s interests. Byzantine world and the world of Islam : the history of peoples is not just wars and territories. The pollination of one culture with another is the richest and most truthful piece on the evolution of humanity and humanism. 4
