Identifying Prime Numbers Lesson plan = 60 min activity This has been developed for use on Sumdog (www.sumdog.com), a new website offering high-quality, free mathematics games for students aged 9-13. Classroom resources Objective • Review prime numbers less than 100 and develop ways to identify them Structure • • 60 min lesson Online activity followed by offline classroom activity Resources • • Access to the Sumdog website Student handout from our website (http://www.sumdog.com/en/Prime_Numbers_Review/attachments/PrimeNumbers_ Handout.doc) Plan • • Preparation (optional): ◦ Sign up for an account on Sumdog and create accounts for your students. Activity (60 min): ◦ Quickly review prime numbers (5 min) ◦ Play Sumdog games (15 min) ▪ Pass out the student handouts. These will explain how to use the website. ▪ Have the students start playing any game, choosing Level 9 (“Identifying prime numbers less than 100”). ▪ Ask the students to think about how they identify primes and figure out what their strategy is. They should write this down on their handout. ◦ Discussion (15 min) ▪ Ask students to share their strategies. Choose a student to write these up on the board. ▪ Discuss why these work and suggest more that they have not thought of. ◦ Play Sumdog games (15 min) ▪ Students should continue playing, trying out a new strategy that they have not used before. Ask them to evaluate how successful it is. ◦ Discussion (10 min) ▪ Discuss with students which strategies they thought were the most successful and then rank them on the board using stars.
