HONORING OUR LONG-TIME INDUSTRY COLLEAGUE Last week we lost a member of our hydro family, our colleague and friend Julie Keil, due to complications from a pulmonary embolism. Many of you worked with Julie over the years as a result of her leadership roles in both the Northwest Hydroelectric Association (NWHA) and the National Hydropower Association (NHA). In 2003 she was the recipient of the Henwood Lifetime Achievement Award, the hydropower industry's most prestigious individual achievement award for her industry contributions. More recently she has been the chair of the Low Impact Hydropower Institute (LIHI), continuing her support of hydropower development while achieving sound environmental practices. We want to continue her stellar work and with the support of her family NWHA has established the JULIE A. KEIL WOMEN IN HYDRO SCHOLARSHIP FUND (more information below). Julie worked at Portland General Electric from 1984 until 2014 where she managed the hydro licensing program for PGE. For more than 25 years, no national or regional conference on hydropower would be complete without her participation due to her experience and knowledge of our industry, combined with her candor and wit. Julie had unfailing energy and commitment to ensuring that settlement negotiations reached a successful conclusion. She would accept nothing less. She will be remembered for her passionate efforts to balance the interest of the hydropower community with innovative environmental protection and enhancement programs that will have a positive impact on our rivers for many years to come. She was a mentor to many of us and will long be remembered for her contributions to our industry. Julie is survived by her husband Peter and two daughters, Caitlin and Kristin. The family hopes that Julie's legacy will be honored with the scholarship fund to continue the educational efforts that were so important to Julie; they will be active in the implementation of the fund. A request from NWHA.... We have established the JULIE A. KEIL WOMEN IN HYDRO SCHOLARSHIP FUND at U.S. Bank. Julie's husband and daughters are very supportive of developing an ongoing scholarship program for women who plan to enter our industry and who may have the opportunity to carry forward Julie's commitment to hydroelectric power. Julie gave so much to our industry we would like to pay it forward by honoring her in this manner. Many of the utilities and companies nationwide have been able to benefit from Julie's leadership, her insight and her ability to work with agencies toward mutual goals. Your company can contribute to the scholarship fund and receive a tax credit as an additional benefit. The fund also accepts individual donations from industry members and associates. You can honor Julie with a donation by: 1) wiring a donation to US Bank (we can provide you routing information); or 2) mailing a donation to NWHA at the address below and mark Attention: Scholarship Fund. Please contact us if we can be of assistance. Jan and I personally seek your assistance in succeeding in growing this fund to honor Julie while providing an opportunity for a future industry colleague Thank you for your consideration.
