Who is Aristotle?
Aristotle (384-322 BCE) is
the most notable product of the
educational program devised
by Plato. Aristotle wrote on an
amazing range of subjects,
from logic, philosophy, and
ethics to physics, biology,
psychology, politics, and
rhetoric.
What is rhetoric?
Rhetoric is the art of
persuasion.
The goal of
persuasion is to
change others’ point of
view or to move others
to take action.
Rhetorical Devices?
You must use at
least 3 of these in
your essay!
Examples of rhetorical devices with a definition and an example:

Alliteration - the recurrence of initial consonant sounds - rubber baby buggy bumpers
Allusion - a reference to an event, literary work or person - I can’t do that because I am
not Superman.
Analogy - two different things that have some similar characteristics - He is flaky as a
snowstorm.
Appositive - places a noun or phrase next to another noun for descriptive purposes Mary, queen of the land, hosted the ball.
Hyperbole - an exaggeration - I have done this a thousand times.
Metaphor - compares two things by stating one is the other - The eyes are the windows of
the soul.
Onomatopoeia - words that imitate the sound they describe - plunk, whiz, pop
Parallelism - uses words or phrases with a similar structure - I went to the store, parked
the car and bought a pizza.
Simile - compares one object to another - He smokes like a chimney.

Pathos?

Using ethos, logos, and pathos will help you to
master the art of persuasion.
• Through language, you will be able to change the
point of view of others!
• Through language, you will be able to motivate
others to take action!
Ethos: Ethics
Ethos is an argument based on
credibility or character.
Using ethos means the writer or
speaker appeals to the audience’s
sense of ethical behavior. The writer
or speaker presents him or herself to
the audience as credible, trustworthy,
honest and ethical.
Logos: Logic
Logos is an argument based on facts,
evidence and reason.
Using logos means appealing to the
reader’s sense of what is logical.
Pathos: Passion (Emotions)
An argument based on
feelings
Using pathos means
appealing to readers’
emotions and feelings to
invoke sympathy.
