8th Grade Summer Reading List 2015

Dear Parents,
Research shows that students who read outside the classroom score better academically. Reading is essential to
your child’s academic success. As a school of excellence, we have established a summer reading program for all
students of Somerset Preparatory Middle. It will enable your child to extend the skills he/she developed during the
previous year as well as equip them for their upcoming grade. Reading comprehension is an essential life skill. It is
imperative that students work on increasing their abilities in this area over the summer.
Novel Reading
Students entering grades 7 and 8 are required to purchase, read Call of the Wild by Jack London and
complete at least ten reading logs on the book during the summer break. Your child will be required to bring
their novel and completed reading logs to their Language Arts teacher the first day of school for a grade.
For two weeks, the Language Arts teacher will conduct in-class novel studies, in which students will be
required to complete a plot diagram, a character analysis chart, and a quiz. Any new student to SACM is
expected to obtain a copy of the novel, read it and engage in the above mentioned activities for a grade during the
two week period.

Summer reading provides an avenue for students to both activate academic skills during the summer and
to launch academic progress at the beginning of the school year in English Language Arts/Reading.
Summer reading will also further help develop the foundation of rigor and close reading skills that will be
used throughout the year as well as promote literacy by exposing students to literature of merit.
We encourage parents to be actively involved in their child’s reading selections. Your child is required to
purchase, read Call of the Wild by Jack London and complete ten reading log entries to include 4-6
complete sentences. Your child will be required to bring their novel and completed reading logs to
their Language Arts teacher the first day of school for a grade. (Reading Log attached)
You’re more than welcome to have your child read a second book over the summer break. Reading ability,
personal interest, emotional maturity, and family values are all factors that will influence your child’s book
selection.
Directions: Complete the Summer Reading Contract and return it to your Language Arts teacher on the
first day of school. Use an additional page if needed.
