Boolean Search Operators/Phrase: Boolean search operators AND, OR and NOT allow you to search more effectively, creating very broad or very narrow searches. Click on one of these from the drop-down menu when inputting your search. AND - Narrows a search to find records with all search terms: i.e. travel and Europe finds articles that contain both travel and Europe. OR - Widens a search to find records that contains at least one of the terms: i.e. college or university finds results that contain either college or university NOT - To exclude terms i.e. finds records that contain one term but not another 2.2 The wildcard symbol is an asterisk (*) can be used to replace the ending of the root of a word to find all forms/endings of that word, i.e. comput* will find results for computer, computers, computing, computational etc. 2.3 Limiting searches - To find full text journal articles on a particular subject, a search query must be formulated. It may be useful to consult an Index or Thesaurus to clarify your search terms. For example: to find articles on “outdoor education” Enter your search terms in the Keywords box ie outdoor and education Ensure the option “only content I have full access to” is highlighted Tick the Journals option 3. Displaying Results The results are displayed at the bottom of the screen (you will need to scroll down) in order of relevance; alternatively this can be sorted by title A-Z, publication date or author. The results show the title of the article, author, journal title, volume, issue, page numbers and year of publication. There are a number of options: download or view full text, first page preview and related (articles) Clicking on the title of an article provides a summary or abstract. Keywords are displayed and a link to the pdf full text 4. Save Searches Click on Advanced search (found on the right-hand side of the search bar) and enter your required search criteria.
