Christ in Our Family Today's feast of the Epiphany reminds us that Jesus came into the world for all, not just a select group of people. Into all nations a light has come and today we reflect on the wonderful gift Jesus gives us in light. If we journey with him, there is always hope and the darkness of confusion, ignorance, sin, and even death is dispelled. God is with us and knows every aspect of what it means to be truly human. The results of our fall survey have been compiled and two things have been revealed. The first is that many St. Mary's families like the traditional schedule we have for our youngest students but they would like a slightly longer day. Secondly, a growing number of families need a preschool program that allows for more hours and days per week. To meet the needs of as many families as we can, and given our physical space, in the fall of 2017 we will be offering: · 4 hour morning sessions next year for all 3 and 4 year olds · 3 year old program will continue to meet on T/Th. · 4 year old programs will meet M/W/F or M-F with the option of extending the day through 3:00pm. It is our desire to be responsive to family needs while keeping our program developmentally appropriate for preschoolers. They had a great big star in the sky to lead the way. I am no Boy Scout, so I am not sure how well I would do following a star like that. But the important point here is that God led them to the manger. The manger was a place that unless God specifically showed you this was where the Christ Child was born you wouldn't have believed it. You would have passed on by. In our lives, there are no big stars in the sky leading us where we need to go. It isn't so easy sometimes discerning where God is leading us. We may seek to use our gifts wisely, but in what manner and to what end is not always clear. This is where prayer can make a huge difference. If we seek to cultivate a prayer life where we are mindful of the presence of God throughout our day, then the call is easier to discern. We can help the process by intentionally offering to God in the morning the entirety of the day to come: all our actions, all our time, and all our decisions. In the evening, we can examine the past hours of the day and reflect on when we responded well to Christ's call and when we fell short. Then we resolve to begin again tomorrow, inviting Christ to be with us every step of the way. God may not offer a star in the sky to lead us, but if we invite us on our journey each day, the path will be much Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS clearer. Baptism of the Lord—January 9 "I need to be baptized by you, and yet you are coming to me?" Jesus didn't need to be washed clean of any sin, and John the Baptist knew it. But nonetheless, Jesus was humble enough to be baptized like the rest of us. This humility is at the heart of Jesus' mission on earth. As Saint Paul says, Jesus "emptied himself...coming in human likeness...he humbled himself" (Phil 2:7-8). He did not need to become human, to be born of a woman into a poor family, or to suffer and die on the cross. Rather, Jesus freely chose to do all of these things out of love for us. And in the process, he gave us a model to follow. By being baptized, Jesus emphasized the importance of participating in this sacred action. And later in his ministry, he confirmed the significance of baptism when he instructed his apostles to "make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit" (Mt 28:19). Through baptism, we become disciples of Jesus. As baptized Christians, we are both called and equipped to be Christ's followers, his pupils, and his friends. Today, we might ask ourselves if we are embracing this calling wholeheartedly. Do we follow Jesus' example of love for God and neighbor? Do we study his word and live by his teaching? Do we nurture our relationship with him, as we would with any friend? Jesus humbled himself for our sake. Let us show our gratitude by being his faithful disciples today and every day. With the joyous and busy holiday season behind us, Parish Pantry volunteers extend a BIG THANK YOU to all who donated food, funds and supplies, ran food drives, and prayed for our ministry. With your generous support, we distributed more than 40,000 lbs. of food to 950 clients (136 per week) on the 7 Mondays in November and December. Some of you brought us turkeys, hams, eggs and other fresh foods. Many of you donated shelf-stable food at weekend masses. Our Thanksgiving Day Mass collection allowed the purchase of hams for families at Christmas. Some left us plastic sacks and egg cartons – distribution essentials. Various groups collected food from the greater community on our behalf. And we could not complete our mission without your faithful prayers. May God bless everyone in our parish family for your support, no matter how big or how small – we could not do it without you! Questions? I was born to a Catholic mom and a Jewish dad (who objected to mom raising me Catholic), so although I was raised Christian, it still felt like I had no spiritual roots. I went to Mass as a child with my maternal grandma and always felt at home there. After a trip to the Vatican (in 2011) and the birth of my daughter Scarlett (in 2013), I felt it was time to “come home” and to also give my daughter a solid foundation of faith. My husband, Geoffrey, and I are both going through RCIA together and we’re really looking forward to being a part of a worldwide family of Catholic brothers and sisters. Ioan Gotia, DCJM, “The Transfiguration of Christ,” resides in the chapel of Stella Maris School, Madrid, Spain. The image depicts Christ with Moses, Elijah, and the three apostles Peter, James, and John. (John 1:14). It is presented as the point where humanity (signified by the child in the image) meets God, with Jesus himself as the connecting point, bridging heaven and earth. The Transfiguration “is the sacrament of the second regeneration”, our own Resurrection (St. Thomas Aquinas, STh III, 45, 4 ad 2.), “giving us a foretaste of Christ’s glorious coming when he will change our lowly body to be like his glorious body.” (Phil 3:21; CCC 556.) ¨ Do we recognize in the Light of faith that each of us is image and likeness of God? ♦ Do we understand that only in the light of the gift that is the other we can love? ♦ Are our relationships founded in the Mercy of God? ♦ Do we live and teach our children humility, the light of themselves, in the Mercy of God? ♦ Is prayer, openness to the love of God, the secret of our spousal love?
