JUMP ROPE 2 - Long Rope Skipping Equipment Required: 6 Long skipping ropes 1 Short skipping rope per student Number of Participants: Unlimited Playing Area: Works well on a court or hard surface FORMS OF LONG ROPE SKIPPING R1 X1 x2 x3 X4 R2 o1 Wiggly snake Normal long rope skipping Double time (pair skipping) Eggbeater Double Dutch How do we play? 1. Get the students to put themselves into three differing ability groups according to where they think they are at as a skipper (Beginner, Intermediate & Advanced). 2. Ask the class who would be willing to be a rope turner and from there select six of those students. 3. FIGURE 8 – Get the students to line up in one single line on a 45 degree angle to the rope in each of their three ability groups (as shown above in the diagram). 4. The first person in the line (x1) goes into the rope, jumps it once and then runs out, runs clockwise around rope turner 2 (R2) and waits where (o1) is in the diagram. Meanwhile the second person (x2) has let the rope turn once (or as many times as agreed on by the ability group – there may be more gaps between jumps for the lesser ability groups) then hops in, jumps once and follows the first person to where they went. This trend continues until you get back to the first person in the line or someone has stopped the rope while trying to jump. If someone does happen to stop the rope, they are out and grab their single rope and practise with that until there is a winner in the group and the three groups restart the game (perhaps using a different form of long rope skipping). 5. At the conclusion of the first rounds get your students to reassess their ability level and get them to change accordingly. SAFETY Get the three groups to space themselves from one another so they are not getting in each other’s way. Also ensure the rope turners are rotated if someone else has volunteered to take over. This is to encourage whole class participation.
