MISSISSIPPI LEGISLATURE REGULAR SESSION 2017 By: Representatives Mangold, Currie, Holloway To: HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 1 2 3 4 5 6 Rules 61 A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE MANY ACCOMPLISHMENTS OF COACH GWYN YOUNG UPON HIS 900TH WIN AND OVERALL 901-250 RECORD AS THE COPIAH-LINCOLN COMMUNITY COLLEGE ATHLETIC DIRECTOR AND HEAD BASKETBALL COACH OF THE LADY WOLVES BASKETBALL TEAM. WHEREAS, Coach Gwyn Young, the Athletic Director and Head 7 Women's Basketball Coach at Copiah-Lincoln Community College, has 8 exponentially advanced the college's athletic program during his 9 illustrious 40-year career at the institution, and most recently, 10 on January 26, 2017, he achieved yet another milestone on his road 11 of success when the Lady Wolves defeated Meridian Community 12 College 76-70 to give him his 900th career win and to date, 13 overall 901-250 winning record; and 14 WHEREAS, before he became the coach and athletic director at 15 Copiah-Lincoln Community College, Coach Young was a student and 16 star basketball player for the Wolves team, and to commemorate his 17 immense success at the establishment, the basketball court in 18 Mullen Gymnasium was named in his honor in 2011; and H. No. 61 17/HR43/R2102 PAGE 1 (ENK\EW) *HR43/R2102* ~ OFFICIAL ~ N1/2 19 WHEREAS, Coach Young furthered his academic and athletic 20 success at Mississippi College after his graduation from 21 Copiah-Lincoln, and during his tenure with the Choctaws, he was 22 the Most Valuable Player and team captain on the basketball team 23 and received his bachelor's degree before attending the University 24 of Southern Mississippi to earn his master's degree; and 25 WHEREAS, over the course of Coach Young's exceptional 26 basketball career at Copiah-Lincoln, his teams have received 27 numerous accolades, including claiming victory at seven NJCAA 28 Region XXIII titles and eight Mississippi Association of Community 29 and Junior College (MACJC) state titles; garnering the second 30 place finish at 10 NJCAA Region XXIII titles; making six NJCAA 31 National Tournament appearances; and not posting a losing record 32 since the 1980-1981 season; and 33 WHEREAS, Coach Young's incomparable leadership and expertise 34 is evidenced in more than just wins in the record books and over 35 the course of his coaching career, as he has engrained moral 36 integrity and discipline into each of his high caliber athletes, 37 and for his efforts, he has been inducted into the National Junior 38 College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Women's Basketball Hall of 39 Fame, the Copiah-Lincoln Hall of Fame, the Mississippi Community 40 and Junior College's Sports Hall of Fame, and the Mississippi 41 Association of Coaches Hall of Fame, and he was named the Region 42 XXIII Coach of the Year in 1989, 1993, 1997, 2002, 2007, 2010 and 43 2011, the MACJC and MAC Coach of the Year in 1993, 2001, 2007, H. No. 61 17/HR43/R2102 PAGE 2 (ENK\EW) *HR43/R2102* ~ OFFICIAL ~ 44 2010, 2011 and 2013, and Coach of the Year for Junior Colleges by 45 The Clarion-Ledger several times; and 46 WHEREAS, the game-changing plays and brilliant strategic mind 47 of Coach Young guided the 1989 Lady Wolves Basketball team to a 48 school best 4th seed in the national tournament, and his former 49 players have signed with 37 different colleges and universities, 50 and to follow in his footsteps, many go on to become coaches 51 themselves; and 52 WHEREAS, when Coach Young is not occupied molding the minds 53 of the younger generation or drawing up new plays for his 54 basketball teams, he enjoys spending time with family, who has 55 supported him throughout his career, his wife, Velesta, two 56 children, Lane and Jessica, and five grandchildren, Mailey Kate, 57 Reece, Justin, Mary Gwyn and Grant; and 58 WHEREAS, the legacy of superior play and true sportsmanship 59 forged by the tenacious and undaunted spirit of Coach Young, who 60 has broadened the Copiah-Lincoln players' knowledge of the game 61 and refined their skills in execution, is constantly etched at the 62 forefront of the minds of those who were mentored by him, who 63 worked with him, and others who experienced his greatness as his 64 success at the college continues to amass; and 65 WHEREAS, Copiah-Lincoln Community College has truly 66 benefitted from the unrivaled skill and competence Coach Young 67 provides to its athletic program, as success overflows from the 68 court and tales of his accomplishments will forever echo H. C. R. No. 61 17/HR43/R2102 PAGE 3 (ENK\EW) *HR43/R2102* ~ OFFICIAL ~ 69 throughout the halls and across the bleachers with the beginning 70 of each new season; and 71 WHEREAS, it is the policy of this Legislature to recognize 72 and commend the accomplishments of Mississippians who dedicate 73 their lives to the betterment of this state's youth, especially 74 those such as Coach Gwyn Young, who continuously cares for 75 children other than his own and instills in them the qualities and 76 characteristics to become great citizens of this Magnolia State: 77 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF 78 REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING 79 THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the many 80 accomplishments of Coach Gwyn Young upon his 900th win and overall 81 901-250 record as the Copiah-Lincoln Community College Athletic 82 Director and Head Basketball Coach of the Lady Wolves Basketball 83 Team, and express deepest wishes for continued success in all of 84 his future endeavors. 85 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be 86 furnished to Coach Gwyn Young and to the members of the Capitol 87 Press Corps.
