.

OR
Is Ender really a hero? Does he behave, think, react the way a hero would? Pick 3 personality traits Ender displays
throughout the story and evaluate his growth and development throughout the story, explaining through these traits,
how Ender is, or isn’t, a true hero.
Keep in mind the following when writing a paper:
 An argument essay is about explaining your point based on facts/evidence and the persuasive techniques
you have learned do not fit into this.
 You should not use the words “I”, “you”, “my” or any other first person pronouns. They are not
appropriate in this type of essay.
 Include a strong, clear claim at the end of your introduction
 End your paper with a “world statement” in the concluding paragraph (what do you want people to think
about as the finish your essay?)
You must include the following requirements:
 A strong claim at the end of your introductory paragraph
 Keep a strong tone by including at least 5 powerful, emotional words in each paragraph
 You will also need to include 1 quote per body paragraph from a piece of literature and one general
heroism quote in your introduction
Follow this process:
1. Create a prewrite for your essay – you must have a minimum of three body paragraphs (ie: three ways
to become a hero). Remember: your prewrite is your foundation so no prewrite, no grade.
2. Write your body paragraphs – make sure that you include the different requirements.
3. Write your introduction and concluding paragraph. Don’t forget to have a strong claim.
4. Edit! Word choice? Sentence Fluency? Flow? Conventions? Depth of Elaboration? Layered
sentences? Make sure you edit your typed draft as well before you hand it in to avoid silly typos.
5. Finalize – typed: 12 pt. font, Times, double-spaced, 1” margins. Your final draft needs to also include
a proper heading.
Your final draft will be due Tuesday 1/31 at the beginning of class.
If your essay is not submitted by the beginning of class on Tuesday, you will not be allowed to watch the
movie with the rest of the class. You will go to an alternate location to finish working on your essay.
