Change usually comes as a result of issues such as health, economy, social status as well as

Levels of Change
1. Intellectual – We must ___________ it. Some may say they agree, yet “dig
in” because they don’t understand. Not enough information.
2. Attitudinal – We must _______ good about it. This engages our emotions.
3. Behavioral – We must be willing to ___________ and do it.
4. Organizational – We must _____ the process and __________ it with everyone.
4
Leading Change: Resistance to Assistance
We may perceive certain styles respond in only one of the 4 natural change responses
when, in fact, all styles can, if lead properly, go through all of these responses.
Two Different Perspectives in Viewing Change
First: As the ______ of change.
“Everyone thinks of changing the world, but no one thinks of changing himself.”
Second: As the _______ of change.
“Our ability to successfully change and bring it about in others will determine our success as
leaders.”
“Being aware of Normal feelings, thoughts and reactions will assist you in adapting to
create a successful change.”
“Normal” Responses and Awareness
1. _______ ________ is normal during times of change.
When facing change, if we know that this is normal, then we can persevere until it
begins feel comfortable.
When leading change, we should help people understand and deal with this.
2. Focusing on the ______ rather than the _______ is normal during times of change.
If you are the target of change, you must force yourself to look for the benefits.
If you are leading change, you shouldn’t push the positives first. You should identify what
the losses will be, talk about them and let people work through it.
Note: Natural Concerns During Times of Change
Informational – Tell me the truth about these changes.
Personal – Tell me exactly how this will affect me.
Implementation – How are we going to do this?
Impact – Will it make a positive difference for me/us?
Collaboration – Who can we get to help us? Who can we go to for help?
Refinement – How can we make this idea better?

Leading Change: Resistance to Assistance
3. People feeling that they are _________ during times of change are normal.
If being confronted by change, you should never face it alone.
If you are leading change, then you need to get people helping one another with it (get them
talking, sharing, teaching, etc).
4. People can effectively handle _______ changes at one time.
If being faced with change, you should try to focus on just a couple at a time.
If you are leading change, you should be careful not to add too many changes at one time.
5. Feeling as if you don’t have enough _________ during times of change is normal.
If being targeted, you must seek to be creative and seek other’s help.
If leading, you must direct them to resources and teach them how to use them creatively.
6. People are at different levels of __________ for change.
If you are facing change, you need to get with others who are handling it well and learn
from them.
If you are leading, you need to bring people around who are ready for change and let them help
you plan strategies for bringing the others on board.
7. People normally _______ into the ____________ after change has been introduced.
If you are facing change, you shouldn’t get upset with yourself when you retreat to old
patterns.
If you are leading, make sure you continue to follow-up with the changes and help others
deal with it.
Leading Change:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
Identify your style and blend. Understand your needs & natural responses.
Recognize the needs and concerns of others.
Identify the perspective. Am I targeted or leading change.
Adapt natural feelings and thoughts about change.
Include others in all aspects of change.
“Deciding not to address your concerns about change is denial and will not result in a positive
change experience for you and your team.”

Strategic Plan for Leading Change
1. Create Sense of Urgency
• Most overestimate how much they can force change and underestimate how hard it is to
drive people out of their comfort zone.
2. Put Together a “Guiding Coalition” = Team
•
Leader + 5 – 10 people with a commitment to improve performance
1) Power Players
2) Expertise – various points of view
3) Creditability with the group
4) Leadership – proven leaders
3. Develop the Vision
•
Vision = picture of the future with some implicit commentary on why change.
1) Vision is key in producing change by helping direct, align and inspire action.
2) Without a “Vision” transformation effort can dissolve with confusing, incompatible
and time consuming projects that go in the wrong direction
4. Communicate the Vision
1)
2)
3)
4)
5)
6)
7)
Key Elements in Effective Communication of Vision
Simplify
Word Picture
Multiple Forums: big meetings, small meetings, memo, formal and informal interaction
Repetition
Lead by Example – behavior consistent with the vision
Address the inconsistencies immediately
Two Way Communication
5. Empower People to Effective Change
•
•
•
•
•
Communicate a sensible vision
If employees have a shared purpose it will be easier to initiate actions to achieve vision
Make structure compatible with vision
Provide the training and support needed
Confront those who undercut needed change
6. Plan Short Term Wins (within 6 months)
•
•
•
•
•
•
Provides evidence that sacrifices are worth it
Reward change agents with a pat on the back - Positive feedback builds moral
Help fine tune vision and strategies
Undermine cynics and self serving resisters –
Clear improvements make it difficult to block
Build Momentum
Don’t declare victory too soon - premature celebrating stops momentum
7. Anchor New Approaches in the School Culture
•
•
Change takes 3 – 5 years to be deep down in the culture.
Change is secure when it is “the way we do things around here”.
