Parks PA R K S & P L AY G R O U N D S There are 65 parks in the Botany Bay Local Government Area with Sir Joseph Banks Pleasure Gardens unquestionably being the biggest drawcard. The gardens were styled on old photographs and engravings of the original zoological and botanical gardens which existed in the early 1800’s. A $1.2 million renovation and landscaping of the six hectare site for the bicentennial now offers life size animal sculptures, a running track, bike track, walking tracks, barbecue facilities and a duck filled lake. All parks in the area give residents a choice of both passive and active recreation, and often include children’s playgrounds. Preservation also extends to native animals with recent works conducted to relocate a threatened population of endangered frog species through the Frog Focus Program. Trees STREETSCAPES, TREES & GARDENS Council actively supports programs to renew our streets with colour and trees. Our tree program nominates a particular species of tree for each street. A Tree Preservation Order exists within the Botany Bay Council area to safeguard the community’s tree population and trees under this order cannot be removed or trimmed without Council permission.
