SAMPSON & GREGORY: Act 1, Scene 1
[Enter Sampson and Gregory, with Swords and Bucklers,
of the House of Capulet]
Sampson A' my word we'll not carry coals.
Gregory
No, for then we should be Colliers.
Sampson I mean, if we be in choler, we'll draw.
Gregory
Aye, While you live, draw your neck out o’th Collar.
Sampson I strike quickly, being mov'd.
Gregory
But thou art not quickly mov'd to strike.
Sampson A dog of the house of Montague, moves me.
Gregory
To move, is to stir: and to be valiant, is to stand: therefore, if thou art mov'd, thou
runst away.
Sampson A dog of that house shall move me to stand.
Gregory
Draw thy Tool, here comes of the House of Montagues.

NURSE (& stand-in for Juliet): Act 1, Scene 2
Nurse
How long is it now to Lammas tide?
Capulet
A fortnight and odd days.
Nurse
Even or odd, of all days in the year come
Lammas Eve at night shall she be fourteen. Susan and she,
God rest all Christian souls, were of an age. Well Susan
is with God, she was too good for me. But as I said, on Lamas
Eve at night shall she be fourteen, that shall she, marry,
I remember it well. 'Tis since the Earthquake now
eleven years, and she was wean'd I never shall forget it,
for then she could stand alone, nay by' th'
rood she could have run, and waddled all about: for even
the day before she broke her brow, and then my husband,
God be with his soul, a' was a merry man, took up the
Child, "Yea" quoth he, "Dost thou fall upon thy face? Thou
wilt fall backward when thou hast more wit, wilt thou
not Jule?" And by my holy-dam, the pretty wretch left
crying, and said "Aye": to see now how a jest shall come about.
I warrant, and I shall live a thousand years, I never should
forget it: "Wilt thou not Jule" quoth he? And pretty fool it
stinted, and said "Aye."

BENVOLIO & MERCUTIO
Ben
Romeo, my Cousin Romeo, Romeo.
Mer
Romeo, Humors, Madman, Passion, Lover,
Appear thou in the likeness of a sigh,
Speak but one rhyme, and I am satisfied:
Cry but “Ay me!” Pronounce but “love” and “dove.”
The Ape is dead, I must conjure him,
I conjure thee by Rosaline's bright eyes,
By her High forehead, and her Scarlet lip,
By her Fine foot, Straight leg, and Quivering thigh,
And the Demeans, that there Adjacent lie,
That in thy likeness thou appear to us.
Ben
And if he hear thee thou wilt anger him.
Mer
This cannot anger him.
Ben
Come, he hath hid himself among these Trees
To be consorted with the Humorous night:
Blind is his Love, and best befits the dark.
Mer
If Love be blind, Love cannot hit the mark,
Romeo goodnight, I'll to my Truckle bed,
This Field-bed is too cold for me to sleep,
Come shall we go?

TYBALT & CAPULET (SM as Romeo)
Romeo
For I never saw true Beauty till this night.
Tybalt
This by his voice, should be a Montague.
Capulet
Why how now kinsman,
Wherefore storm you so?
Tybalt
Uncle this is a Montague, our foe:
A Villain that is hither come in spite,
To scorn at our Solemnity this night.
Capulet
Young Romeo is it?
Tybalt
Tis he, that Villain Romeo.
Capulet
Content thee gentle Coz, let him alone,
A' bears him like a portly Gentleman:
And to say truth, Verona brags of him,
To be a virtuous and well govern'd youth:
I would not for the wealth of all the town,
Here in my house do him disparagement:
Therefore be patient, take no note of him.
Tybalt
I'll not endure him.
Capulet
He shall be endur'd.
What goodman boy, I say he shall, go to.

ROMEO & JULIET
Juliet
Dost thou Love me? I know thou wilt say aye,
And I will take thy word, yet if thou swear'st,
Thou may'st prove false: O gentle Romeo,
If thou dost Love, pronounce it faithfully:
Or if thou thinkst I am too quickly won,
I'll frown and be perverse, and say thee nay,
So thou wilt woo: But else not for the world.
Romeo Lady, by yonder blessed Moon I vow,
That tips with silver all these Fruit tree tops--
Juliet
O swear not by the Moon, th' inconstant Moon,
That monthly changes in her circled Orb,
Lest that thy Love prove likewise variable.
Romeo What shall I swear by?
Juliet
Do not swear at all:
Or, if thou wilt, swear by thy gracious self,
Which is the god of my idolatry,
And I’ll believe thee.
Romeo If my heart’s dear love—
Juliet
Well, do not swear. Although I joy in thee,

I have no joy of this contract to night,
It is too rash, too unadvis'd, too sudden,
Sweet good night:
This bud of Love by Summer's ripening breath,
May prove a beauteous Flower when next we meet:
Romeo O wilt thou leave me so unsatisfied?
Juliet
What satisfaction can'st thou have tonight?
Romeo Th' exchange of thy Love's faithful vow for mine.
Juliet
I gave thee mine before thou did'st request it:
And yet I would it were to give again.

PARIS, JULIET, FRIAR
Paris
God shield I should disturb Devotion,
Juliet, on Thursday early will I rouse ye,
Till then adieu, and keep this holy kiss. [ Exit Paris.]
Juliet
O shut the door, and when thou hast done so,
Come weep with me, past hope, past care, past help.
Friar
O Juliet, I already know thy grief,
It streams me past the compass of my wits:
Juliet
Tell me not Friar that thou hearest of this,
Unless thou tell me how I may prevent it:
Be not so long to speak, I long to die,
If what thou speak'st, speak not of remedy.
Friar
Hold then: go home, be merry, give consent,
To marry Paris: Wednesday is to morrow,
To morrow night look that thou lie alone,
Take thou this Vial being then in bed,
And this distilling liquor drink thou off,
When presently through all thy veins shall run,
A cold and drowsy humour: for no pulse
Shall keepe his native progress, but surcease:
And in this borrowed likeness of shrunk death
Thou shalt continue two and forty hours,
And then awake, as from a pleasant sleep.
