Besides Trusting the Count and Place Value, the other areas include: Multiplicative thinking Multiplicative thinking is the capacity to work efficiently with an extended range of numbers (e.g. larger whole numbers, decimals, common fractions, ratio, & percent) and an ability to recognise and solve a range of problems involving multiplication and/or division. Children need to move on from counting in groups (repeated addition) to thinking multiplicatively. Students MUST have strategies for learning their tables e.g. 4 x tables are double your 2 x tables. Rote learning does not provide an opportunity to build understanding. Students need to identify that three fours are the same as four threes. 0408 727 632 SPORTS DAY Friday 7th April END OF TERM Thursday April 13th 2.05 finish Student Free Day 1st May First Day of Term 2 2nd May Four threes Three fours Partitioning Key understandings must be work with fraction ideas: Fractions must be equal parts As the number of parts increases, the size of each part decreases The number of parts names the part If the total number of equal parts is increased by a certain factor, the number of parts required increases by the same factor. There is a lot of tricky thinking involved with partitioning and it is important the children are provided with opportunities to make and experience these concepts in multiple ways. Staff have focused on developing their understandings of the key concepts and have been working on ensuring that we use consistent language across year levels and across the school. Working in year level teams, staff have been reviewing their planning, programming and assessment to ensure that the ‘Big Ideas’ are continually revisited. It can put children at risk for emotional and behavioural problems, poor academic achievement, and ongoing relationship problems. Parents also may also experience increased depression, anxiety and stress. It is important that families have access to evidence-based preventative interventions. Researchers at the University of South Australia and The University of Queensland are developing an online intervention to support parents during this transition. They are encouraging parents to have an input into what is important to go in the program and what their needs are. Interested parents can learn more about the study and complete a brief online survey at https://exp.psy.uq.edu.au/pads Page 3 Willunga Primary School Page 4 Willunga Primary School Page 5 Willunga Primary School Page 6 Willunga Primary School Page 7 Willunga Primary School Page 8
