/ YEAR 10 ENGLISH ‐ PASSAGE ANALYSIS: TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD _________________________________________________________ Now that we have viewed To Kill a Mockingbird and explored some of the major themes and ideas of the text, your task is to compare a particular scene from the film with a passage from the original novel. Task Description: Students are to critically analyse the features of the selected passage. The analysis must address features such as structure, content, ideas and concerns, voice and linguistic features. This task will be completed in class so you should bring a PLAN to the assessment task with you. o The final passage analysis should be written in ESSAY FORM o Word Count: 500 ‐ 800 words Steps for writing your Passage Analysis: 1) Use BASICS to annotate the passage (B)ackground: How does this passage fits within the structure of the narrative? What happens before and after? Is it an important passage? Is it a turning point? Does it foreshadow a particular event or character? Does it reflect a recurring image and or idea? (A)ction: What happens in the passage? Who is the narrator? How is this passage structured? (S)etting: How does the setting of the courtroom shape the views and values presented in this passage? (I)deas: What are the key ideas and concerns that you believe are suggested by this passage? (C)haracters: Who is in this passage? Why? What changes in character traits do you notice? How would you account for them? Have the characters changed in any way and, if so, how? (S)tyle: What is the tone of this passage? How does it affect the reader/audience? What does the characters’ use of language reveal about their points of view? How are literary techniques (i.e. imagery, symbolism, rhetorical questions, personification, etc.) used to create meaning for the reader? 2) Compare and contrast this passage from the corresponding scene in the film o Are the characters presented in a similar way? o Is there extra information provided in one of these texts that is left out of the other? If so, how does this additional information contribute to our understanding of the major characters and ideas in this excerpt? 3) Plan your response into ESSAY FORM Introduction – introduce the passage and where it fits into the narrative. Outline the main ideas to be discussed in the body of the essay. Body Paragraphs – include 2‐3 body paragraphs that follow the TEEL structure Conclusion – summarise your main ideas and points of comparison.
