More than a mere trip, a holiday to Namibia is an extraordinary journey through time and space; a journey back to the origins of life. Eternal and boundless, with a kaleidoscope of
colours and cultures... few words can accurately describe Namibia's amazing diversity. There is an incredible variety of fauna and flora in this timeless scenery. Lion, leopard, cheetah,
rhino, elephant and many species of antelope can all be observed in Etosha National Park, as well as remote areas such as Hartmann's Valley, Palmwag and Puros, to name but a few.
Visiting Namibia gives you a feeling of complete freedom with an unforgettable, ever-changing backdrop.
Practical information
Geography
SituatedinthesouthwestofAfrica,NamibiasharesborderswithAngola,Botswana,
Zimbabwe, Zambia and South Africa. The surface area of the country is 824,269km²
and it has 1,600km of coastline on the Atlantic Ocean.
Population
There are 2,2 million inhabitants with a density of 2,2 people per km2 and 13
different ethnic cultures.
Languages
English is the official language and is spoken throughout the country, but there
are 16 languages and dialects spoken in the 13 regions of Namibia.
Infrastructure
The country boasts a good infrastructure made up of very well maintained tarred
and gravel roads, two airports for big carriers and 28 official airports for smaller
planes, as well as two modern harbours.
Topography
Namibia has a wide range of physical terrains that can be divided into four major
groups: the Namib Desert, the central plateau, The Kalahari and the bushveld of
the Kavango and Caprivi areas. The highest point of the country is the Brandberg
Mountain culminating at 2,570m. The capital city of Windhoek is situated 1,650m
above sea level.
Formalities
It is compulsory for visitors to have a passport which is valid for six months after
the date of departure from Namibia, with three empty pages, including two pages
next to each other. All visitors must enquire before departure whether a visa is
required to enter Namibia.
Health
There is a risk of malaria all year round, especially in the northern part of the
country.Formoreinformationwerecommendyoucontactyourhealthpractitioner
before departing. Apart from the tetanus vaccine which is also recommended (but
not compulsory), no other vaccines are required when travelling to Namibia. A
valid vaccination certificate for yellow fever is required for passengers arriving at
least six days after leaving or transiting through an infected area.
Communication and phone network
Namibia has a modern and reliable postal and telecommunications network.
Mobile phones can be used in most areas of the country, with the exception of
very remote areas, such as Hartmann's Valley or Puros. It is, however, possible to
rent satellite phones.
Time zone
From September to March: GMT + 2
From April to August: GMT + 1
Currency and payments
The Namibian dollar is the official currency in Namibia, and the South African
rand is legal tender. The exchange rate varies between N$11 and N$13 for one
British pound and between N$6 and N$8 for one US dollar. Travellers cheques
and foreign currencies can be exchanged in every bank and bureau de change.
Most establishments accept payment by credit card, with the exception of petrol
stations, where payments are cash only. Payments with VISA and MASTERCARD
are commonly accepted (American Express is rarely accepted).
Water and electricity
Most tap water is safe to drink, except in certain parts of Caprivi and along
permanent rivers (please enquire from the accommodation establishments on
arrival). Visitors should also exercise caution in rural areas. Mineral water can be
bought in every lodge, restaurant, grocery shop and most petrol stations. The
power in Namibia is 220/240 volts. We lend adaptors for the three-point plugs to
our clients on arrival.
Driving in Namibia
Vehicles in Namibia are right-hand driven and drive on the left-hand side of the
road. An international driving licence together with the national driving license is
compulsory.
Climate
Seasons in the southern hemisphere are opposite to those in the northern
hemisphere: when it is summer in Europe, it is winter in Namibia. There are two
main seasons: the rainy season and the dry season. The rainy season (from October
to March/April) is also the warm season, when temperatures vary between 15/20
degrees - at night - to 35/40 degrees - during the day - depending on the region. We
recommend packing light cotton clothing to wear during the day but also a jacket
for the evenings, which are often cooler and can be quite cold. The dry season
(from April to September) can be cool and even cold. However, the weather
is very sunny during the day and temperatures vary around 20/30 degrees. We
recommend packing warm clothes, especially for the evenings.Temperatures can
drop to -5 degrees Celsius in the dry winter months. A pair of sunglasses, a hat and
sunscreen are a necessity all year round.
Photography
Namibia is a paradise for photographers... albeit a very dusty paradise! The very
fine dust can damage your cameras, especially digital ones. We recommend to
bring a plastic bag to protect your cameras, as well as at least two memory cards
and batteries. You can charge your batteries in most lodges and hotels.
Flights
Several airlines fly to Namibia: Air Namibia (via Frankfurt), British Airways (via
London and Johannesburg), Air France (via Paris and Johannesburg), LTU (via
Munich and Düsseldorf ) and South African Airways (via New York). We do not
arrange flight tickets but can assist on request.
Insurance
We strongly recommend that you take out a good travel insurance covering
cancellation fees, repatriation on medical grounds and hospital fees. This is not
included in our prices.
5
Respecting the country, its people and the
environment...
In order to ensure a carefree and relaxing holiday in Namibia, we would like
to remind you some of the basic rules to observe:
It is customary to give a tip of 10% in restaurants, as well as a tip
for porterage and general service in the different accommodation
establishments. Salaries in Namibia are in some cases still quite low and
people are very happy to receive a tip.
Ask for permission before taking pictures of a person.
Thank you for not littering. Namibia is a very clean country and we pride
ourselves on keeping it that way.
Do not waste water. In Namibia, more than anywhere else, water is a precious
and scarce commodity.
Do not feed wild animals and don't try to get close to them.Their behaviour
is unpredictable and feeding them disturbs the ecology.
Respect the traffic regulations in the country as a whole, as well as the
special rules in the national parks (e.g. in Etosha and other game parks,
don't get out of your car and don't drive off the main road).

Among the biggest national reserves in the world (22,270km2),
the Etosha National Park is a true wildlife sanctuary, with 114
species of mammals, 340 species of birds, and many species
of reptiles. A huge white dried lake or 'pan' is situated in the
northern central part of Etosha, and gives the park its name.
During the dry season, we highly recommend spending three
nights in Etosha, and if possible always plan for at least two nights
on the eastern side of the park, which generally offers the most
interesting game viewing.

In the north-western corner of Namibia is a vast expanse of
mountains and semi-arid plains, where the semi-nomadic
people, the ovaHimba, live. Opuwo, the administrative capital
of the region, is the departure point for the Epupa Falls, which
were created by the Kunene River on the border of Angola
and Namibia. The river drops in a series of waterfalls spread
over1.5km, with the greatest single drop being 37m. The falls,
framed by coloured rock walls, fig trees, baobabs and makalani
palms, are set in a largely unspoiled environment. We do not
recommend going to the western part of the Kaokoland without
an experienced guide.

Thisephemeralriver,markingthetransitionbetweentheErongo
and Kunene, is a true wildlife oasis where desert-adapted
elephants, giraffes, baboons and antelopes can be seen in their
natural environment throughout the year. Discovering this
untamed wilderness requires a 4x4 vehicle and an experienced
guide. During the rainy season, the riverbeds can become
inaccessible. A stay of two nights is highly recommended during
the dry season.
KALAHARI
1
The Palmwag area offers wide-open spaces covered with layers
of rust-coloured stones. The Palmwag concession is a protected
area where black rhino, desert-adapted elephant, mountain
zebra and various antelope can be found. There is also a wide
range of predators such as lion, cheetah, hyena and leopard. No
fences close off the concession allowing game and predators
to roam freely. To maximize your chances of seeing black rhino,
we recommend a two-night stay at Desert Rhino Camp or
Grootberg Lodge.
Ancestral land of the San (Bushmen), the Kalahari spreads
over eight countries and consists of red sand dunes, bush and
pans (dried lakes). In Namibia, the Kalahari is situated on the
eastern side of the country, ranging all the way from the south of
Mariental to the north of Tsumkwe.

one of the largest concentrations of rock petroglyphs in
Africa, Twyfelfontein became Namibia's first UNESCO World
Heritage Site in 2007. The visit consists of two walks on wellmaintained paths. Should you also want to partake in a 4x4
drive to look for desert-adapted elephants, oryx, kudu and
other wildlife in this area, we recommend that you plan a twonight stay. During the rainy season this drive may be more
difficult (or impossible) to do, depending on the amount of
rain that has been received.
12
NAMIB DESERT / SOSSUSVLEI / DEAD VLEI / SESRIEM
13
NAMIBRAND NATURE RESERVE
14
East of Sesriem, the Naukluft Mountains are formed by a plateau
surrounded with gorges. Thanks to a large number of hiking trails
with natural pools along the path, the Naukluft Mountains are a
real hiker's paradise. A campsite and 4x4 trail are also available.
One of the oldest deserts in the world, the Namib Desert is
one of the most visited tourist attractions in Namibia. At the
end of a 65km tar road and a 5km sand road are the dried
lakes of Deadvlei and Sossusvlei, surrounded by some of the
highest dunes in the world (some more than 300m high), with a
wide array of colours which vary in intensity depending on the
time of the day. Close to the entrance of the park, the Sesriem
Canyon offers an interesting walk. Formed by theTsauchab River,
this small canyon is a fascinating example of different geological
formations and the effects of weather conditions millions of
years ago.
Skeleton Coast National Park is located in northwest Namibia,
and has the most inaccessible shores dotted with shipwrecks.
The park is 20,000km2, and possibly the least visited park in the
world. The largest part of the Skeleton Coast is closed to the
public, and access can only be obtained via the few concession
holders allowed to operate in this area. It is nevertheless
possible to visit a small section of the park by driving along the
coast from Palmwag to Swakopmund. The coast is generally
flat, occasionally relieved by rocky outcrops. The southern
section consists of gravel plains, while north of Terrace Bay the
landscape is dominated by sand dunes.
This private reserve is one of the biggest in southern Africa, and
has a boundary with the Namib Naukluft National Park. The
dunes might be smaller but the beauty of the landscape is just
as extraordinary! There are different types of accommodation
for different budgets, ranging from a self-catering farmhouse,
a two-day guided hiking itinerary, to a four star tented camp
or lodge accommodation. A minimum of two nights is highly
recommended and in some cases compulsory.
With more than 80,000 Cape fur seals, Cape Cross
accommodates one of the biggest seal colonies in Africa. If a
cruise in Walvis Bay is included in your tour, it is not necessary
to make the detour of 100km round trip to visit Cape Cross,
as you will see plenty of seals on the cruise.
LÜDERITZ / KOLMANSKOP
The first seaside resort in Namibia has maintained a strongly
German atmosphere. It offers a good opportunity to rest
and refresh between the north and the south of the country.
Numerous activities are offered (on supplement), including
quad biking, township tours, scenic flights above the Namib
Desert, and horse riding.
WALVIS BAY
NAUKLUFT MOUNTAINS
15
Lüderitz, a small town in the south of the desert, accommodates
the second commercial harbour in Namibia. Not very far away is
the main attraction of the area, the historic town of Kolmanskop.
One of the richest towns in Namibia at the start of the diamond
rush in the early 1900s, it was completely deserted by 1956. Since

which attract a large number of visitors and photographers.
11
FISH RIVER CANYON
Walvis Bay is where you will find not only Namibia's biggest
commercial harbour, but also a natural reserve and a protected
bird migration sanctuary. Flamingos and many others species
can be seen all year round. A cruise from the harbour is an
excellent way to breathe the fresh sea air and watch Cape
fur seals, dolphins and other marine wildlife in the lagoon.
Combining this cruise with a 4x4 trip to Sandwich Harbour,
where the dunes meet the Atlantic Ocean, will guarantee an
interesting and adventurous day on the Namibian coast.
16
With a length of 56km and a width of 27km, the Fish River
Canyon is the second largest canyon in the world. A number of
viewpoints along its edge offer spectacular views to the many
visitors. The best time to fully enjoy the beauty of the canyon and
its shadow-plays is in the morning. Many lodges - for different
budgets - are available in this area, but one which has been built
on the western side of the canyon (outside of the national park)
offers one of the most beautiful views in Namibia as well as
drives into the canyon (depending on the month of travel and
the weather conditions).

SELLING AND PLANNING HOLIDAYS TO NAMIBIA
GENERAL
In order to avoid (unpleasant) surprises once your clients are in Namibia, here are a few essential pointers:
 A classic ten-day tour represents about 3,000km of driving! Whether your clients are driving themselves, or are being driven by a guide-driver, the long distances and many hours in the vehicle can be tiring. An average of five hours per day is
spent in the car. For people travelling with children, we recommend an itinerary with shorter distances, two or more nights in each lodge and activities that children enjoy (boat trips, farms, etc.).
Discovering Namibia is very much about admiring the wonders of nature and the grandiose landscape. Cultural and architectural attractions are comparatively few. The limited contact with the local people can also cause disappointment and
has to be planned in advance as they are not always easily accessible.
Safaris and game drives are mainly organised in Etosha and on private reserves, as well as in some smaller national parks, which are often off the beaten track. Wildlife is less abundant outside of these areas. A two-night stay in a lodge that
offers game drives is a good way to increase your chances of seeing animals, such as black rhino, desert elephant and the different species of antelope.
The Caprivi Strip is not a real alternative to Botswana as there is far less wildlife to see. However on a classic tour it can be a very good option for linking Namibia to the Chobe Reserve in Botswana, followed by the Victoria Falls.
WHEN TO TRAVEL IN NAMIBIA
The best time of the year to come to Namibia depends on what your clients
want to see. There are six distinguishable periods:
January & February: These are the hottest months of the year and part of the
rainy season. This is also breeding time for many animal species. The rain fills up
the waterholes and the animals spread out across the plains, becoming more
difficult to see. Some animals, like elephants, migrate towards the north. The
landscapes are beautiful with a luxuriant variety of greens.
March & April: End of March/beginning of April is normally the end of the rainy
season (although in some years they have had the highest rainfall). Nature is still
green, and after their migration, the animals are back from the north. The days
are getting shorter, and with the time change on the first Sunday of April, the
sunset is one hour earlier.
May & June: This is the beginning of the winter, with dry weather and cold
temperatures making their appearance. June is the coldest month of the year.
It is the best moment for hiking, especially for the Fish River Canyon trek and
Tok Tokkie Trails, which are closed during the hot summer months. Skies are
cloudless with an amazing azure hue. Even though temperatures during the night
may drop to below zero, during the day it warms up to 20/25 degrees Celsius.
July & August: The school holidays in Europe make this one of the busiest times
in Namibia, especially August, when we experience the highest influx, mainly of
self-drive clients. It's not the best time of the year to visit the country if you
don't want to see a lot of other tourists! Unless you book long in advance, it is
quite difficult to get your preferred accommodation, rental cars and even guides.
The days get longer, the temperature warms up a little (especially in August),
and the waterholes are getting drier, providing a better chance to see wildlife,
especially in Etosha. August can be one of the windiest months of the year.
September & October: There is another time change on the first Sunday of
September, so the days are longer, allowing tourists to have more time to get
to lodges and enjoy the scenery along the way. It is the beginning of spring, and
trees like jacaranda and acacia trees start to bloom. The temperature is ideal
(not too hot, not too cold) and the chances of rain are low. From October,
temperatures rise and the possibility of first rains increase. Many larger tour
groups travel to Namibia during these two months (together with November).
November & December: As it gets colder in the northern hemisphere, the
heat rises in Namibia, with a chance of rain towards the end of the afternoon.
The temperatures become more bearable after a short rain shower. Those who
need a break from the cold of the European winter will enjoy Namibia at this
time!
BOOKINGS FOR ACCOMMODATION AND CAR RENTAL
The capacity of accommodation in Namibia is quite limited, despite the opening of a few new lodges a year. It is common to be put on the waiting list, even
when booking a year in advance. Clients must be aware when they sign their contract that a lodge originally indicated in the program may be replaced with
an alternative establishment (of the same standard wherever possible) and there may be a consequent increase or decrease in price.
The majority of lodges in Namibia are not equipped with air conditioning or heaters. Clients must be made aware of this at time of booking.
Most rooms in lodges are equipped with separate twin beds so if you are making a booking for honeymooners, or clients who require a double bed, this
must be clearly mentioned at the time of booking, but cannot be guaranteed. Double rooms can often be converted into triple or family rooms by adding a
mattress, small bed or stretcher.
There is no official classification system for accommodation in Namibia. The categories and number of stars given to accommodation establishments are
based on our personal opinions.
8
MEET THE NAMIBIANS
NORTH / SOUTH OR
SOUTH / NORTH ?
Apart from the tour guide and staffat the lodges, tourists often feel they do
not have enough real contact with local people during a tour in Namibia.
Here's a short list of ideas that can help to change that:
Theadvantagesofatourrunningonananti-clockwiseitinerary(fromthe
north to the south) are numerous:
The road to Etosha is a straight, monotonous tarred road.
The Nama Children's choir: During a lunch stop at Maltahöhe, between
Sesriem and Mariental (Kalahari), or between Aus and Sesriem, it is
possible to book a choir of nearly 25 children of Nama origin. The 'clicks'
in their language bring an exotic sound to the songs they perform. The
money raised is used for projects that benefit the children in this area
of the country where many people are unemployed.
Namibia is south of the equator, meaning the sun is always north.
The 'Damara Living Museum': Close to Twyfelfontein, a group of Damara
people have set up a 'living museum' which recreates a traditional village
to preserve and share their gradually disappearing culture. Visitors to
the village will witness traditional processes, such as making and using
tools, weapons, jewellery, handicrafts, and leather for clothing, as well
as traditional dances, songs and games. There is also a guided bush walk
during which women harvest plants, seeds or roots for food, perfume
or medicine, and men display their hunting and trapping techniques.
This project helps the local population to benefit directly from tourism.
Therefore it is better to start with this part of the country
and finish the tour on a high note. The beauty of the landscape
escalates as you travel, climaxing at the Namib Desert and the
dunes of Sossusvlei. For those who are on a self-drive tour, it
provides an easy start on tar roads with a chance to get used to
left-hand driving before tackling the gravel roads.
It is better to start with the shorter north bound part of the
itinerary (normally only one or two days) and then continue with
the longest part of the tour to the south (six to ten days). This
also avoids driving with the sun in your eyes.
It is better to start with the safaris in Etosha, as many people
are so impatient to see wildlife they do not enjoy the beautiful
landscapes the rest of the country has to offer. Once the game
viewing component is over, people tend to relax and really enjoy
the rest of their tour.
These remarks apply to the majority of tours, but there
Himba Village in Kamanjab: This village was created when Jaco was
adopted by a Himba tribe near Opuwo. When he decided to go back
to live on his farm, some of the ovaHimba followed him and settled in
a traditional village on the farm. Since then, 28 orphaned children have
grown up in the village, five of them going to school, and the rest being
brought up in the traditional values of the Himba people (who are
exempted from sending their children to school for cultural reasons).
On a guided visit to this village, you will learn about the traditional
Himba way of life: their ceremonies, beliefs, hairstyles, and many other
interesting facts. As the village depends on tourism and is geared
towards tourists, we would rather go there than an isolated village in
Kaokoland, where too much contact with tourists could disturb the
people's way of life.
are always exceptions! An itinerary may have to be done the
other way round due to availability of accommodation. When
tours continue to Botswana or Zimbabwe, where the standard
of lodges may be higher than in Namibia, and the trips more
relaxing, we suggest starting in the south of Namibia and ending
with Botswana and Zimbabwe.
ALTERNATIVE ACTIVITY
Wine tasting: Due to dry and arid conditions, we have only three vineyards
in Namibia; two of them can be visited:
The 'Kristal Kellerei' is situated near the town of Omaruru and
offers a 30 - 45 minute visit of the vineyard followed by a wine tasting
(Colombard, Paradise Flycatcher) as well as liqueurs like Nappa and
Brandy. They also offer light lunches.
Neuras is situated close to Büllsport and produces wines such as
Shiraz and Merlot. The owners offer a two-hour tour of the property
(minimum four people) during which you discover the spring that
irrigates the whole vineyard. This is followed by a visit to the wine
production area and a wine tasting. A light lunch can also be arranged
for a maximum of 12 people.

GUIDEd tours
Travelling in Namibia with a driver-guide is ideal for visitors who do not want to worry about logistics but be free to enjoy their stay. In addition to a more relaxed experience, this also
means travelling with someone who has an in-depth knowledge of the country, so you have less chance of missing any of the amazing sites the country has to offer. These tours can
be organised on an individual or group basis according to two different types of tours: tailor-made tours or scheduled group tours.
GOOD TO KNOW…
 Because of inherent hazards on these types of tours (rain, roads in bad condition, and other safety issues),
itineraries may be modified. Such modifications will not entitle clients to a partial or full refund. The
guide-driver is solely responsible for these decisions, which are taken with the guests' interest in mind.
 The number of participants on scheduled tours has to be confirmed at least 45 days prior to the arrival of
the clients in Namibia. Beyond 45 days, the bookings cannot be guaranteed and availability in the different
accommodation establishments can only be confirmed (or not) on request.
Children older than six years are welcome on scheduled tours. Most establishments can accommodate one
child with two adults (the reduction indicated in our price lists is based on this arrangement). For rates for two
children sharing with two adults, please do not hesitate to contact us. All triple or family rooms are subject to
availability.
THE TYPE OF TOUR
TYPE OF ACCOMMODATION
TAILOR-MADE TOURS
LODGE OR HOTEL ACCOMMODATION
SCHEDULED TOURS
CAMPING TOURS
These tours are designed according to the wishes and
budget of the participants and are always planned with
balance in mind. They can be organised for individuals as
well as for groups (enterprises, friends, photographers,
etc.). This is the perfect type of tour for those who wish
to travel on a private basis and keep a certain a amount
of flexibility in their itineraries. The budget to plan for this
type of tour is generally higher than for scheduled tours.
These are tours with fixed departure dates sold to
different agents, with a mix of languages: English, Spanish
Italian, French and/or German. All our guides are fluent
in English and at least one other European language. The
guide departing on these tours will be chosen depending
on the nationalities on the tour; e.g. if there are many
Spanish and French-speaking clients the guide will be
English, Spanish and/or French-speaking (will be confirmed
one month before departure of the tour). These tours
are created for visitors who enjoy meeting other people
during their holidays, or who are looking for a tour which
suits their budget. They are less flexible than tailor-made
itineraries. We operate two tours of nine days or more:
Namibian Highlights and African Treasures, both in lodge
accommodation. In addition to our longer tours we also
offer short tours to Etosha and Sossusvlei, as well as a
Fish River Canyon extension which can be added onto
the basic tours. These scheduled tours can be booked on
a private basis (price and conditions available on request)
and can be completed by extensions on an individual basis
to Botswana, Victoria Falls, Mozambique or South Africa.
We also offer scheduled tours in a mobile tented camp
in Botswana.
The hotels and lodges are selected based on a number of
different criteria: reception, service, comfort, integration in
the environment and geographical situation (closeness to
sites; balanced distance between two places). According to
the budget of the client, accommodation on the itinerary
can be luxury, superior or standard accommodation. The
star rating accorded to the different establishments is
based on our personal opinions as the official rating system
in Namibia has not yet been finalised.
This way of travelling enables visitors to access remote
areas in Namibia, and get closer to nature than is the
case with lodge tours. A camping tour is definitely for
nature and adventure lovers, not necessarily for those
with a small budget. Overnights take place in campsites
(equipped with ablution blocks and mostly hot water for
showers). In some cases, wild camping in more remote
areas may be necessary (no ablution blocks or running
water available). Except for sleeping bags, all the camping
equipment is included: igloo tents (2.1m X 2.1m), thick
foam mattresses, pillows, chairs, tables and cooking
equipment.
We can organise camping tours based on two options:
 Participative camping: active participation from the
clients is required, such as helping to load/unload the
luggage and equipment, setting up camp, cooking and
washing dishes.
 Non-participative camping: with this option clients
do not participate at all. The cost of such a tour is higher
than the cost for a normal lodge tour.

FLY-IN SAFARIS
Discovering some of Namibia's most memorable sights from a small plane will make your holiday an unforgettable adventure. Travelling this way is ideal for clients who don't have a lot of
time to visit the country, who wish to spend less time travelling and more time enjoying each destination, or who are looking for exclusivity. The possibilities are unlimited and depend
mainly on budget and the wishes of the client. It is also possible to combine driving and flying in the same tour.
PRIVATE CHARTERS
TYPES OF PLANES
For those who are looking for more exclusivity and more
flexibility during their stay in Namibia, renting a private
plane is the best solution. The advantages are that there
is more time to visit the different sites and to participate
in the activities offered by the lodges. For two participants
this option is usually (though not always depending on the
itinerary) more expensive than taxi flights. For three or
more passengers it usually works out cheaper.
Twin engine and single engine planes are available for
charter. Single engine planes have their wings above the
windows and therefore provide the best views on scenic
flights. The flight is a bit longer than with a twin engine
plane.
Single engine planes:

TAXI FLIGHTS
Different taxi flight routes are proposed by two companies
covering most of the country. This formula allows you to
travel at a more affordable price, especially if there are only
one or two passengers (for three or more passengers, it
is worth taking a private plane). The inconvenience is that
there are specific timetables that need to be adhered to
(which might not allow you to participate in some of the
morning activities offered by lodges) and there are often
a few more stops than necessary between the point of
departure and the final destination.

IMPORTANT
For private charters in a Cessna 210:
Passengers are limited to 25kg of soft luggage per
person, including hand luggage and camera bags for two
passengers, 15kg for three passengers and 12kg for four
passengers.
For taxi flights:
Passengers are limited to 20kg of soft luggage per person
including hand luggage and camera bags.
Good to know…
 It is possible to design an affordable fly-in safari package by making use of accommodation which is charming but not
necessarily very luxurious. On our itinerary we have opted for medium-priced accommodation, but higher-end options
are available for those who desire more luxury, exclusivity and comfort.
Strict conditions apply for passenger and luggage weight. Most of our quotations are based on an average weight
of 80kg per person. Each aviation company has its own rules regarding the weight of the luggage according to the
number and weight of passengers. These regulations will always be specified on our quotations. Please communicate
as much information as possible on weight so as to allow us to provide you with the most accurate quote and luggage
restrictions.

DRIVING in Namibia
GOOD TO KNOW…
 In Namibia we drive on the left side of the road.
 An international driving licence accompanied by the national driving licence, must be provided at the car rental
 We recommend that you spend the first night in Windhoek if your arrival time is later than 13h00. It takes on
average three hours for vehicle collection and the meet and greet (in addition to the airport transfer, which takes
about 45 minutes).
 For a balanced program, one should not plan to drive more than 350km per day.
 For all visits to traditional villages and homesteads, it is highly recommended that you use the services of a local
tour guide. Never make any donations of money, sweets or other objects which have no real use in a village. If you
wish to make a donation, we can provide you with a list of associations or trusts.
 Off-road driving is strictly prohibited, whether it is inside or outside a national park. There is a high risk of damaging
the vehicle and/or getting lost. Off-road driving destroys plants and minute wildlife, and vehicle tracks can remain
for years in the desert, spoiling the landscape.
 All our rates are based on the prices and conditions of Odyssey Car Hire, our preferred partner for car rental. In
case of a rental contract with another car rental company, rates and/or conditions may change. In most cases there
may be supplements and their conditions are less flexible.
company at time of collection of the vehicle. No international driver's license is needed if the national license is issued
in English.
 The main roads are tarred but the majority of the network consists of gravel road. These gravel roads are in very good
condition and maintained regularly, but can be bad after the rainy season.
 The traffic regulation signs are very clear and it is (almost) impossible to get lost when following them carefully.
 On gravel roads, the speed limit is 80km/h but we recommend that you stay below 70km/h. On tarred roads, the speed
limit is 120km/h but we recommend staying below 100km/h. Always keep in mind that wild animals can cross the
roads at any time, therefore night driving in Namibia is not recommended except in case of emergencies.
 Fuel: it is recommended to fill up whenever possible, even if the tank is not completely empty. On a standard tour of
Namibia, petrol stations are found on average every 200 - 300km. Payment for fuel has to be made in cash.
TYPES OF VEHICLES
Eight-seater minibus: Toyota Quantum or similar
These vehicles are perfect for families or small groups of
travellers who wish to be together in the same vehicle.
We suggest them for a maximum of six passengers. They
are not 4x4 and should only be driven on official roads.
We also recommend small soft bags of 15kg per person as
luggage space is limited.
Four-seater Sedan: Volkswagen Polo Classic or similar
Five-seater 4x4: Toyota Hilux Double Cab or similar
Ideal on standard tours, these cars are excellent value for
money, but are not adapted for more adventurous tours
to areas such as Epupa Falls or Opuwo. They are perfect
for a maximum of two adults and one child, or three
adults. As the boot is quite small, we advise that you take
soft luggage not exceeding 15kg per person.
This is a great vehicle for camping tours and trips that take
you off the beaten track, or when travelling during the
rainy season. They are also available with roof tents and
are fully equipped for camping (detailed list on request). A
maximum of four persons is recommended, although these
vehicles do have space for five passengers.
Four-seater small SUV: Daihatsu Terios or similar
Five-seater 4x4: Toyota Land Cruiser
With a higher ground clearance and more spacious than
a sedan car, a small SUV offers more comfort for an
enjoyable drive. We strongly recommend booking one if
the budget allows for it. However these cars are not low
range and should only be driven on official roads. They are
ideal for a maximum of four adult passengers. As the boot
is quite small, we advise that you travel with soft luggage
not exceeding 15kg per person.
In our personal opinion this is the best 4x4 by far. The Land
Cruiser offers the same advantages as the 4x4 Double Cab
but with more space and comfort. We highly recommend
renting one if the budget allows. Some Land Cruisers can
fit up to five persons. It is also possible to rent one of our
Land Cruisers with driver for clients wanting a self-drive
tour but do not want to drive themselves, or who wish
to have an opening roof for safaris in national parks (see
pages 10 & 11 for more details of our fleet).

CONSERVATION SAFARIS
The luxury mobile camp safaris detailed below were created to enable the local communities to benefit from the protection of wildlife and natural resources outside of national parks.
The profits generated from these tours go directly to the community. The goal is to improve their skills and quality of life, as well as providing a fair, regular and balanced income for
their efforts. This unique model of eco-tourism facilitates a true cultural exchange with the locals, since travellers are considered as guests and not as tourists. These itineraries can be
sold as tours on their own, as extensions of existing tours, or as scheduled tours as described below. Other extensions from three to ten days, in partnership with the communities,
can be organized in the Caprivi Strip and Kaokoland. They are all led by specialized regional tour guides allowing even better contact with the local population.
DESERT Lions - 6 days / 5 nights
Dr Philip Stander has been working with carnivores for nearly 30 years and has dedicated the last 12 years to the study of the desert-adapted
lions. These unique predators (numbering between 100 and 130) live in the harsh conditions of the Kunene region.
To survive in this extreme environment they have to cover huge distances to fulfill their needs, leading to unavoidable impact on human
settlements. The Desert Lion Project is a trust that is trying to find solutions for the conflict between humans and wildlife that happens when
people and predators are active in the same areas and have to share resources.
This unforgettable experience allows you to share in the work of Dr Stander, in his daily mission to protect and learn more about these
fascinating animals. Itineraries are subject to the lions' activities and location, local conflicts or Dr Stander’s availability. It can result in a search
for lions in very remote areas or in a study of specific conflicts. The lions are mostly nocturnal and the tour will adapt to their daily routine.

KAOKOLAND - 6 days / 5 nights
Steve Brain is passionate about the savannah and is known to be
one of the best naturalists in Namibia, with four different species
of butterflies named after him. He guides bird-watching tours,
knows a lot about mammals, and is just as interested in reptiles
and the smaller, often overlooked creatures!
This tour spans from the Etendeka Mountains to the Orupembe
Conservancy. The unspoiled nature of area makes this the ideal
place for rare and unusual sightings. The different ecosystems, like
the dry riverbeds or wide open plains, are home to a particularly
well-adapted fauna. It’s the ultimate destination for all those who
are passionate about natural history.
Rainfall in this region cannot be foreseen but is extremely
important. Bird migrations are influenced by these irregular rains,
and Steve’s extensive knowledge of their habits and habitats will
open your eyes to a whole new world.

GOOD TO KNOW…
 These tours are not your normal tourist package, allowing a more in-depth experience and discovery of Namibia and its people, with specialists who make a real difference in the field. You will join in the daily routine of these experts
as they carry out their work. These tours cannot follow a ready-made itinerary from point A to point B, as the rhythm is determined by the environment, the local population and the wildlife.
During these tours, a logistics team takes care of the camp set-up, and will attend to the personal comfort of the clients, allowing the guide and the specialist to spend as much time as possible with their guests.
The expeditions usually begin in Swakopmund early in the morning to join the specialists at the end of the afternoon. Alternatively, you can meet up with the team during the first day of the tour in one of the following lodges: Sesfontein
Lodge, Etendeka Mountain Camp, Grootberg Lodge or Palmwag Lodge. The tour ends in Swakopmund and/or one of the lodges mentioned previously. The scheduled tours begin and end as indicated in the itinerary.

CULTURE and NATURAL RESOURCES - 6 days / 5 nights
Very few people have as much knowledge of their field as conservation specialists and anthropologists, Garth Owen Smith and Dr Margaret Jacobsohn.
For two decades, during the worst years of war, apartheid, drought and poaching in Kaokoveld (now Kunene region), they went against the ideas and
philosophy of the time by asserting that local communities could help to protect natural resources. They were convinced that wildlife would survive if
local communities were given back ownership of the land.
Garth and Margie created the NGO 'IRDNC', Integrated Rural Development and Nature Conservation, to assist the local communities in protecting
their environment through creation of specialized zones known as 'conservancies'.
Explore this fascinating environment of wide open spaces and learn about the culture of the Himba people. This experience takes you on a close
encounter with the local people and their land, and gives you a unique perspective on the region. The tour starts in Wereldsend, in the heart of
Damaraland, and goes to the north of Kaokoland. The itinerary will be decided based on the projects and activities of the conservancies.

Okavango Delta, Moremi Game Reserve, Chobe National Park, Kalahari Desert ... so many legendary places in one country! Botswana has been developing its tourism industry for a very
long time, making conservation and environmental protection a priority, a strategy which has shown great success in attracting tourists from all over the world. Most lodges have their own
airstrip, making it easy to fly in and out. On the other hand, it is essential to have excellent knowledge of the terrain and good 4x4 driving skills if you wish to travel by car. We therefore strongly
recommend travel by plane or driving with an experienced guide. It is also worth including two or three lodges in each region (with a minimum of two nights each) for a most enjoyable stay.
PRACTICAL INFORMATION
Geography
Botswana covers over 582,000km2 and is situated in the centre of Southern Africa,
bordering Namibia, Angola, Zambia, Zimbabwe and South Africa.
Topography
80% of the country is covered by the Kalahari Desert with its red sand dunes
and the immense pans of dry clay. In the northwest we find the floodplains of the
famous Okavango Delta.
Wetlands
Most of the wildlife activity takes place close to rivers and swamps. The Linyanti
Swamps, the Okavango Delta and the Chobe River are a paradise for wildlife
enthusiasts and photographers.
Population
Botswana has a population of 1,8 million inhabitants (less than three people
per km²). The majority of the population lives in the east and north-east of the
country.
Religion
The population is mainly Christian but traditional and ancestral beliefs remain
strong.
Languages
English is the official language for business and tourism. The national language is
Setswana.
Infrastructure
Mostpublicroadsareingoodcondition.Someareasinthecountryarenotaccessible
by road (e.g. the Okavango Delta) or can present difficult conditions (sandy and/or
muddy, depending on weather conditions). We therefore recommend to travel by
plane for a part of your stay in order to reach all the jewels in this wildlife paradise.
Health
The risk of malaria exists throughout the year, especially in the Okavango Delta
and the Chobe area. It is strongly advised to consult your general practitioner for
correct advice regarding malaria prevention. The sanitary services of the country
are excellent. A certificate of vaccination against yellow fever is required for all
the passengers arriving within six days after leaving or transiting through a yellow
fever zone.
Time Zone
GMT + 2
Phone
In most lodges, communication is done via satellite phone. Network for mobile
phones is mainly limited to cities.
Water and electricity
Water is safe to drink nearly everywhere, but we still recommend that you drink
bottled water. Voltage is 220/240 volts AC, 50 hertz. An adaptor is useful for
charging your batteries.
Climate
The dry season extends from May to October. During these months temperatures
can be cool during the day and the nights can be very cold, especially from June to
August. The wet season goes from November to April with high temperatures in
September and October (up to 40°C).
Photography
Botswana is one of the most incredible destinations for wildlife photography. For
digital cameras it is best to bring extra memory cards and batteries, as it can be
difficult to charge them in some places.
Flights
All flights to Botswana will transit either via Johannesburg or Cape Town in South
Africa, orWindhoek in Namibia. Flights connect to Maun, which is the starting point
for most safaris, or to Gaborone. We can assist with booking flights fromWindhoek
or Johannesburg should you be unable to do so yourself, but our quotes never
include these flights unless expressly requested and indicated.
Insurance
We strongly recommend that you take out a good travel insurance covering
cancellation fees, repatriation on medical grounds and hospital fees. This is not
included in our prices. Travel insurance is compulsory with some lodges.
Formalities
It is compulsory to carry a passport that is valid for six months after the date of
departure, with three empty pages, including two pages next to each other. All
visitors must enquire before departure for Botswana whether they require a visa.
Currency
The currency used in Botswana is the pula. US dollars and Euros are accepted
everywhere, but the change will be given back in pula. It is therefore useful to
bring small foreign bills. Travellers checks are accepted in banks, and credit cards
(especially VISA and MASTERCARD), can be used in most establishments.

SELLING AND PLANNING HOLIDAYS
TO BOTSWANA
To avoid surprises or disappointments, here are a few essential
tips to succeed in your sales or planning of itineraries:
Capacity in the lodges is limited and some establishments are already
booked more than a year in advance. It is therefore essential to book as
soon as possible to avoid disappointment.
 To secure your reservations, a non-refundable deposit of 20% is required.
 Many lodges in the Okavango Delta and Moremi and Linyanti Game
Reserves are only accessible by plane. Transfers are operated in small
carriers with taxi flights or private flights. Passengers are limited to
a maximum of 15-20kg of soft luggage per person (depending on the
charter company), including hand luggage and a camera bag. Large hard
suitcases are not accepted.
 Botswana is not a family destination. Most lodges do not accept children
under 12 years old, mainly for safety reasons (the lodges are not fenced).
There are a few exceptions. Do not hesitate to contact us for more
information in this regard. We do accept children from six years old on the
scheduled tour.
 There are many different categories of accommodation available, which
require different budgets. Depending on the request of your client and
their budget constraints we can organise tours for 2 days or more into
Botswana, including all major parks and reserves. We work with most of

The Kalahari Desert, which extends over more than 50,000km2, connects across Namibia, South Africa and
Botswana. This ocean of small red sand dunes bordered by tall dry grasses has been inhabited by the San people
for a few thousand years. These people have a profound knowledge of, and respect for, nature in this mythical
desert that is their home. The Kalahari is not a true desert in the sense that it is well vegetated and receives
copious but very unpredictable rainfall. It however holds no permanent surface water and this has resulted in a
fascinating ecological challenge for the flora, fauna and the people who live there. Around the rainy season the
desert comes to life with amazing plants and an influx of wildlife, so this is the best time to visit the Kalahari.

The Okavango Delta is without doubt the best-known destination in Botswana, and rightly so. Situated in
the northwest of Botswana, the Okavango River transports rainwater from the Angolan mountains through a
network of channels and lakes into the sand, creating a myriad of small islands. The Okavango Delta is 1,6 million
hectares of wilderness - water, reeds and flooded plains - in the north of the Kalahari sands. The delta is home to a
huge diversity of over 350 bird species, and a great variety of mammals, including rare or endangered species like
the sitatunga and wild dog. The best time of the year to visit this area is from May to October, when all the herds
gather close to the swamps and the vegetation is not too dense. On the other hand, the best time to come for
bird watching and flora is during the rainy season, from November to April.
Moremi was the first game reserve in Southern Africa to have been created by an African community on their
communal land in 1963. Today, it is one of the best known in the world. Although just under 5,000km2 in size, it
isasurprisinglydiversereserve,combiningmopanewoodlandandacaciaforests,floodplainsandlagoons.Thanks
to this diversity of habitats, there is an abundance of wildlife. Moremi is home to nearly 500 species of bird (from
water birds to forest dwellers), and a vast array of other species of wildlife, including buffalo, giraffe, lion, leopard,

Bordered by the Okavango Delta to the west and the Chobe River to the north, the Chobe National Park is
the second largest park in Botswana. It is a typical environment of dry African savannah, and home to the biggest
concentration of elephants in the world. The dried swamps of Savuti in the south west of Chobe boast a great
variety of carnivores known for their constant activity. Great migration routes traverse Chobe from one side to
the other.

Lunch on the way. Arrival at the new camp in Savute late
in the afternoon. Savute is a well-documented area where
National Geographic has done a lot of filming. Our staff will
already have set up the new camp and have dinner cooking.
Dinner and night in a Tented Camp in the Savute area.
D6: Savute
An early rise takes you to discover this part of the Chobe
National Park. Savute has no permanent water except for
underground reservoirs that are pumped into water holes
scattered around the park. At certain times of the year when
there is no natural water in catchment areas these water
holes teem with wildlife and you can expect to see up to fifty
bull elephants queuing to drink. Return to camp for lunch
and some time to relax before venturing out again in the
late afternoon. Dinner and night in a Tented Camp in the
Savute area.
D7: Savute / Chobe North (160km > +/- 05h00)
Today you leave the dry area of Savute and head north to
the perennial Chobe River. This riverfront is well known for
its abundance of breeding herds of elephant and buffalo, as
well as attracting all other game in search of water. After
lunch en route and a short afternoon game drive along the
Chobe River, return to camp. Dinner and night in a Tented
Camp in the Chobe area.

Formed by the flow of the raging Zambezi, nestled between Zambia and Zimbabwe, the Victoria Falls are one of the true natural wonders of the world, made famous by the English
explorer David Livingstone. This massive wall of water, stretching up to 1,2km wide and pouring out up to 1 million m3 of water per minute after the rainy season, remains a highlight of any
journey in Southern Africa. The falls have been the jewels of Zimbabwe's tourism for over a hundred years. The small town of the same name has taken advantage of its ideal location
close to the falls, offering a great variety of accommodation, from small B&Bs to bigger hotels and more luxurious lodges.
Zambia and Zimbabwe share the amazing Victoria Falls. Livingstone, the closest town to the falls on the Zambian side, has become the regional capital of outdoor sports and activities.
Numerous accommodation establishments are found on the banks of the Zambezi River.
PRACTICAL INFORMATION
Geography
Zimbabwe is a country of 390,580km2 and has common borders with
Mozambique, South Africa, Zambia and Botswana.
Water and electricity
Bottled water is available in every lodge and in shopping centres. We do not
recommend drinking tap water. The electrical power is 220/240 volts AC.
Population
There are 14,3 million inhabitants in the country with a density of 36,6 people
per km2.
Climate
Zimbabwe has a tropical climate. The rainy season occurs from November to
April and the dry season from May to October, with high temperatures that
can reach 40 degrees Celsius during the rainy season (summer). In summer, light
clothing is advised during the day and a jacket in the evenings when it can be cool.
Because of the tropical climate, short rains can occur unexpectedly. Travellers
must pack sunglasses, sunscreen, a hat, a pair of walking shoes, and don't forget
your swim suit! Some lodges require jackets and more formal wear for dinner,
please ask us if you are unsure regarding requirements in this regard.
Languages
English is the official language in the country and many local languages and
dialects are spoken.
Topography
Zimbabwe is a country with high plateaus and no access to the sea. Lake Kariba
and the Zambezi River constitute the largest part of the northern border with
Zambia.
Formalities
It is compulsory for visitors to have a passport which is valid for six months after
the date of departure, with three empty pages, including two pages next to each
other. All visitors must enquire before departure to Zimbabwe whether a visa is
required to enter Zimbabwe. A visa fee has to be paid at the immigration desk
or before arrival in Zimbabwe (depending on passport nationality). Proof of a
return flight ticket may be requested. Conditions to enter or exit Zimbabwe can
be changed without prior notice.
Flights
You can book flights from Windhoek with Air Namibia, or from Johannesburg
with British Airways and Air Zimbabwe. International flights are not included in
our prices. Do not hesitate to contact us for additional information.
Insurance
We strongly recommend that you take out a good travel insurance covering
cancellation fees, repatriation on medical grounds and hospital fees. This is not
included in our prices.
