Memorial Day - A Time to Remember
One of the first official Memorial Day proclamations, originally known as Decoration Day, was made
in 1868 by General John Logan, who was serving as Commander of the Grand Army of the Republic.
This began the tradition of placing flowers on the graves of all the Union and Confederate service
members at Arlington National Cemetery.
The essence of this national day of remembrance is to honor the men and women who have given their lives in the service of
their country. Perhaps the most recognized symbol of Memorial Day is the red poppy worn by many to symbolize their affinity
with those who made the ultimate sacrifice. In 1918 Moina Michael read John McCrae's poem "In Flanders Fields" and was so
moved by his British devotion that she was inspired to write "We Shall Keep the Faith," a poem about the American war dead.
This brief part of her poem gives the sense of her thoughts:
We cherish too, the Poppy red
That grows on fields where valor led,
It seems to signal to the skies
That blood of heroes never dies.
Below is a short prayer that I wanted to share with you as we celebrate Memorial Day.
Lord God Almighty, whose only Son sought not to preserve His life but to make the ultimate sacrifice so that we might have
abundant life, we remember this day the personal sacrifices made by many of our fellow citizens in the service of their
country. On this day we pause, however briefly, to remember and recall those who gave the last measure of their lives for
their faith, their country and their fellow compatriots in arms.
Grant that we and all the citizens of this land may have the grace to honor their good deeds as in righteousness we strive
for peace among all the people of God's creation. Remembering their sacrifice, we rededicate ourselves to the tradition of
courage that you, our Lord, have instilled in us. Give us a deep sense of reverence for life that is tempered by a passionate
desire for justice. Continue in us the valor of those who have woven this tradition into the fabric of our country. We ask
this through Christ our Lord, AMEN.
Please consider taking some time this weekend to attend a Memorial Day service or say a prayer for all of those who have served
our nation and those who are currently serving our nation, working to achieve peace throughout the world.
God’s Blessings, Deacon Jim
What a Special Blessing
We were so blessed by God to be able to welcome Recording Artist Jaime Thietten to our parish and our community last weekend. For those who attended Mass, her concerts, or the prayer service on Monday night, we were gifted by her vocal talents and
her commitment to the faith and also to protecting life. I was privileged to spend some time talking with Jaime about her ministry and her commitment to helping others grow closer to Christ. The one thing that I will always remember that she shared with
me is the question, “Deacon Jim, if the work we do saves one baby or touches one life and leads them to Christ, was the work
worth it?” And of course, that answer is yes. I ask that you continue to remember Jaime and her husband, Pete in your prayers
that God may continue to bless them and the work they do.

Parish Treasurer Trustee Nominations
Asked for Next Weekend
On-Line Giving is Up and Running
At the end of June, Karen Giese will conclude her second two-year term of service as our Parish Treasurer
Trustee, a position to which a parishioner may be
elected and re-elected for a total of three, consecutive,
two-year terms before needing to step away for a year.
Therefore, next weekend, our parish asks each of us to
prayerfully identify a nominee, which may include
Karen, who says she is available to serve a third term.
The top nominees who agree to serve will have their
names placed on a ballot. Then, during a Mass in June,
the ballots will be distributed, votes made, and nominee
vote numbers tallied by a committee. The new or
re-elected trustee will be announced during future June
Masses. The responsibilities of a Parish Treasurer
Trustee, who is a full member of the Parish Finance
council, is to assist the parish pastoral
coordinator/pastor in parish financial
actives, including the care and custody
of funds, assets, supervision of
banking, credit, and insurance.
Our parish now uses an Online Giving system called
WeShare. This will allow you to make your donations
without writing a check each
week. You can set up a recurring
weekly or monthly payment, allocate different amounts for our
different collections, and view complete, accurate financial records at any time. It saves all of us time and is a
win-win for our parish!
Our Parish Mission Team has
Father’s Day
cards available in our Parish Hall card rack.
Please stop by the rack and
see the many card types.
Ecumenical Vacation Bible School (VBS)
The Plainfield United Methodist
Church (PUMC) has invited the

theme this year is called “Workshop
of Wonders; Imagine & Build with God.”
The program is for children ages 4 years old and up to
the 5th grade. VBS will run June 16th - June 20th, from
9:00 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. Registration forms are available
on our Narthex table or on our website and are due by
June 1st. The cost is $5 per child.

Time to Plant the Garden
Many of us will soon be thinking about
getting in the garden (if you have not
already) and beginning to plant fruits and
vegetables. When you are planning your
planting selections, please consider planting a little extra
to donate to the Country Market at our Parish Festival.
You may also want to share some surplus garden
produce with “Joseph’s Hope”, our local food pantry.
Happy Gardening!
“Fill the Crib” Campaign
For a nine month period, October 2013 - June 2014, in conjunction with our monthly Pro-Life Adoration,
we will be holding a “drive” for items needed at the “Baby Boutique” at the First Choice Pregnancy Resource Centers in Stevens Point and Wisconsin Rapids, and to the Life Choice Pregnancy Resource
Center in Wautoma. Expectant mothers can shop at the centers using credits that they earn for such
things as attending scheduled doctor visits, reviewing materials on pregnancy and parenting and working with their advocates at the center.
You will find lists in the crib of “Baby Boutique” items that are needed. The greatest needs right now are diapers and
new clothing. Please bring your items in and place them in the crib.
Our May Crib is being donated Jeff and Kathy Sommers.
Our April Crib was donated anonymously in the name of our St. Paul Religious
Education Program and Religious Ed Students and their families were asked to bring something to
fill up the crib in April. Seventy-three items were reported donated! The most so far!
Thank you to all for your generosity!
We are all encouraged to bring an item to help fill this month’s crib.
Let’s see how we can fill up the crib with gifts of hope for life!

Knowing Your Catholic Faith
During the month of May when we honor Mary, it is helpful to examine her title as the Immaculate Conception.
Here is an article that was sent to me about the Immaculate Conception that I wanted to share with you.
The Immaculate Conception means that the Blessed Virgin Mary, in the first instant of her conception, was preserved free from all
stain of original sin. Two key passages in the Bible help us understand Scripture’s evidence regarding the Immaculate Conception.
We read in Genesis 3:15: I will put enmity between you and the woman and between your seed and her seed; He shall bruise your
head, and you shall bruise His heel. This passage appears immediately following the sin of Adam and Eve. Mercifully, it contains the
first glimpse in Scripture of God’s plan of redemption for the human race: the deliverance from Satan who had just deceived, and the
restoration of our relationship with God. The seed or “offspring” of the woman is Jesus Christ who, through His passion, death (“you
shall bruise his heel”) and resurrection, will strike at the head of the serpent (Satan, and his seed, as well as all who choose evil), and
ultimately defeat him.
The “enmity” (complete, total, irreversible opposition) described here exists between not only “her seed,” but the “woman” herself
and Satan. The “woman” of Genesis 3:15 is Mary, and if there were any semblance of a “tainted” (by sin) nature in her, the word
“enmity” could not have been used. We have from the beginning a strong foreshadowing of the great gift of Mary’s Immaculate
Conception.
In the New Testament, the principal Scriptural reference for the Immaculate Conception is revealed in the words of the Angel Gabriel
to Mary: And he came to her and said, “Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with you! (Luke 1:29) The Angel Gabriel does not use Mary’s
name but calls her “full of grace.” Unlike each of us who has a fallen nature, God created Mary with a fullness of grace that is part of
her very nature. This fullness of grace is appropriate only for the woman who was to give God’s Son an immaculate human nature.
An important question surfaces: Did Mary need a Savior? Since Mary was created without sin, it might seem like she did not, and yet
she says herself in Scripture, “my spirit rejoices in God my Savior” (Luke 1:47). As we hear her speak in this Scripture, she acknowledges Jesus as her personal Lord and Savior. How do we reconcile this seeming contradiction? Mary was “preserved” from all stain
of original sin by a singular grace gift in anticipation of the merits of Jesus’ passion, death, and resurrection. Mary could not have
been conceived immaculate without Christ’s redemptive work. From the first moment of her conception, Mary was redeemed from
ever committing sin, not in a limited sense, but comprehensively, totally. We might ask “how,” since Christ’s Redemptive Act takes
place after Mary’s Immaculate Conception? God’s redemption of humankind is not limited to chronological time since God is outside
of time. The purpose of this favor was given in order that Mary might give to Jesus a human nature free from the effect of sin.
In conclusion, it is important to highlight that Mary was conceived free from sin and she remained free from sin throughout her life
by all her choices in cooperation with the grace obtained by Jesus at the cross. This is why we honor her with our love.
