Helping to protect the future of our planet It is the responsibility of all manufacturers, suppliers and resellers to ensure that the impact upon where we all work and live, made by the products they produce and sell, is constructive. It is in everyone’s interests to seek out only those products that are made with the stabilisation of the environment in mind, and that the use of these products is beneficial not only to the work-place, and our homes, but also to the health and well-being of future generations. At Olivetti we endorse all actions that take positive steps towards this mission and will continue to endeavour in the quest to care for our vulnerable world. For more information please contact us. “It’s our intention to maximise the positive effects our products have on the environment” Dennis Woods Managing Director, Olivetti UK Ltd Olivetti and the Environment Improved Quality and Reduced Emissions The current condition of the planet has focused attention on pressing environmental issues, encouraging all social partners (public authorities, associations, companies) to commit themselves to active protection and safeguarding of the environment. Active participation in protecting the environment has always been at the top of Olivetti’s list of priorities, as reflected in its corporate mission. Decades of indiscriminate dilapidation of raw materials and energy in order to cater to the ever more pressing needs of a constantly expanding economic system, have seriously undermined the delicate equilibrium of world eco-systems. The polymerised toner technology used to enhance the printing quality of Olivetti’s monochrome & colour solutions is unique in the market and has been designed with the environment and users in mind. Because the toner particles are smaller, than ordinary pulverised toner, with a more uniform shape, image reproduction delivers fine lines and small text with clear contours. Photos and illustrations are reproduced more naturally with improved half-tones. Print quality is greatly enhanced with a highly durable print finish to ensure long-lasting, better quality professional-looking documents. To protect the environment and, ultimately, the planet, a compromise must be established between technological development and effects on the environment. Olivetti has endorsed this concept, contributing with a balance between technological innovation and protection of the environment, as confirmed by its ink-jet printhead production facility which has been awarded ISO14001 certification, the international standard for the management of the environment. WEEE and RoHS Directives The EC Directive 2002/96/EC, also known as WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) is intended to prevent and restrict the flow of waste equipment to be disposed of, by applying equipment and component re-use and recycling policies. The Directive applies the concept of Extended Producer Responsibility (Whoever Pollutes: Pays). Manufacturers are, in fact, obliged to finance the ecologically-correct collection, treatment, recovery and disposal of their end-of-life equipment. This financial responsibility applies to products marketed after the Directive came into force on August 13th 2006 and, collectively, for products launched before this date. With a view to prevention, the Directive also encourages the design and production of products that take into account re-use, dismantling, recycling and establishes targets to be achieved by the entire collection and treatment system. One way in which Olivetti makes this easier for everyone is by encouraging its network of dealers to use empty machine boxes, as collection points for all WEEE. Olivetti then arranges for full boxes to be collected; the box, and its contents, are then recycled at a designated processing unit, on behalf of the dealers and their customers. With regards to RoHS (Restriction Of the use of Hazardous Substances) compliancy, all of Olivetti’s products have been manufactured without using mercury, lead, hexavalent chromium, cadmium and flame retardants such as polybrominated biphenyls and polybrominated diphenyl ethers which, under the RoHS directive, are deemed harmful. Waste Reduction and Reusable Materials Olivetti’s dealers are encouraged to collect WEEE in existing machine packaging to reduce waste Olivetti goes a long way to ensuring their products conform to the stringent environmental directives in place. In particular the long-life drums and developers in their copiers and printers, are highly reliable and productive and this reduces service intervals, maintenance costs and user downtime. Low cost, high yield toner cassettes deliver more pages for less money and, when the toner runs out all that needs replacing is the toner in an easy to replace cassette, and not the drum, as these are now separate units. All Olivetti products are manufactured under ISO14001 and adhere to global standards of responsible packaging which is recycled and recycleable. Documentation for setting up the machines can be downloaded via the internet or available on CD to reduce printing but, by their very nature, all models are able to handle 100% recycled paper without affecting output quality or warranty. Olivetti’s polymerised toner is designed to cover the page more efficiently and achieve consistently high print quality Another benefit of this special toner is that it is resistant to ultra-violet rays, which can cause print to fade over time. Prints are now able to be preserved, so reducing the amount of re-printing required. By including wax in the toner, the process of fixing toner to paper is achieved in an oil-less manner, resulting in more vivid colours and reducing the generation of CO2, NOx, and SOx by approximately 40%. Low Temperature Fixing By making the particles smaller and uniform in shape, toner fixing can be achieved at a much lower temperature, preventing paper curling or jamming during the finishing process. Reduced paper curl means the binding and stapling of the output prints is much easier, even in large quantities regardless of thickness. During the fixing process, that normally requires a high fixing temperature, thicker paper absorbs heat, thereby, lowering the fixing temperature. When fixing occurs at a lower fixing temperature the process is not degraded, which enables the use of a wider range of paper thickness. Even thin paper, that would normally wrinkle and curl, is far less likely to suffer these effects because of the lower fixing temperature. Power Consumption Olivetti Products are all Energy Star, and, in the case of the colour range, Blue Angel compliant which means they have been specifically designed to reduce the amount of energy office machines use. With the help of lower fixing temperatures this is achieved every time the machines make copies or prints. Each machine features a power-saving automatic “sleep mode” which, over a year, can reduce the amount of electricity used by our models by 60% over previous years. For instance the 62ppm and 82ppm Olivetti d-Copia 6200 and d-Copia 8200 absorb only 10 watts of energy when in sleep mode. The reduction in warmup times, and first printout times, over the last few years, has meant that office products do not drain unnecessary electrical resources while users are waiting for the machines to become ready. Typically, warm-up times have improved from around 8 minutes, in 2004, for a large colour copier, to less than 45 seconds in 2009, with first output times of an average of 20 seconds being reduced to 6 seconds or less. Lower Noise Emissions Olivetti’s range of products are now being designed to be seen and not heard, as many hard-working gears, within the machines, have been replaced by much smootherrunning drive belts. What is more, solenoids within the engines have had dampers added to cushion their action and reduce the sound emitted when in action. In fact, the d-Color MF551 and d-Color MF651’s document feeder and finishers operate more quietly than their predecessors. Sound testing in special facilities ensure the Olivetti machines surpass expectations for quiet operation “It’s our intention to maximise the positive effects our products have on the environment” Dennis Woods Managing Director, Olivetti UK Ltd Olivetti and the Environment Improved Quality and Reduced Emissions The current condition of the planet has focused attention on pressing environmental issues, encouraging all social partners (public authorities, associations, companies) to commit themselves to active protection and safeguarding of the environment.
