Latino students can pursue the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI) Scholarship Program. It is meant to increase graduation rates among Latino students in post-secondary educational programs. Awards include $1,000 toward an associate degree, $2,500 toward an undergraduate degree and $5,000 toward graduate-level study. The scholarships can be used to cover textbooks, room and board, tuition and educational enrollment expenses. The scholarships are divided over the number of years it takes to graduate. Recipients of these scholarships have become leaders in government, business, education and science. The selection process is rigorous to ensure excellence in the future. Three types of scholarships are offered. The National Scholastic Achievement Awards of $2,000 is offered to an entering freshman with a GPA of 3.5 or higher at least 29 on the ACT or 1350 on the SAT. The Honors Awards of $500 to $2,000 are awarded to those entering freshmen with a 3.25 GPA or better and a 23 or more on the ACT or 1100 or higher on the SAT. More than $3.8 million has been awarded to students in Southern California. Targeted communicated include Orange, Los Angeles, Ventura, Riverside and San Bernardino. Students must have at least one parent of Hispanic heritage to qualify for this scholarship. Applicants need to have a minimum GPA of 2.7 and be eligible to attend an accredited two- and four-year college, university or vocational school. Applicants cannot be older than twenty-one and must be legal United States residents residing within the geographic limits designated by HACER. Forty scholarships are awarded each year worth $2,000 and with $1,000 renewable for each year up to three years for a total of $5,000. High school students enter the program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, which also screens 1.5 million college entrants each year. To enter, students must be planning to enroll in full-time college no later than the fall following high school completion. Student applicants must be US citizens, lawful permanent residents or intend to become US citizens. Approximately 50,000 of 1.5 million entrants will quality with 15,000 finalists chosen. Applicants must be the first in their family to go for an associate's or bachelor's degree. Awards range from $500 to $5,000. Applicants must be Hispanic and a U.S. citizen or permanent resident of the United States. They need to have a minimum GPA of 3.0 and be an undergraduate attending school full-time in the United States or Puerto Rico. Financial need must also be demonstrated. Required documentation includes an official transcript, a letter of recommendation and a resume. Applicants must prove citizenship status and family income. It addresses the financial obstacle that often holds these students back. Hispanic students are defined as Mexican, Southern American, Central American, Cuban, Puerto Rican or other Spanish culture or origin. Geographic limits include Southern California residents between San Diego and San Luis Obispo. Applicants are required to have a high school or college GPA of 2.5 and be full-time students in an accredited college, university or vocational program. Permanent residents, citizens and undocumented students can apply but SAI prefers undocumented students who are AB540. The program is not for graduate and PhD candidates and individuals can only receive one SAI scholarship. The award is given to 500 students each year. There are two types of scholarships. A continuing scholarship is for students entering college the first time and can be renewed for up to four years. A one-year scholarship is for those who are already in college and students and reapply for it each year. Those who are interested in a business career can take advantage of the Citi/TELACU Scholars Mentoring Program. Students looking for a career in engineering and/or business may consider the Toyota/TELACU Scholarships. There is also a Washington D.C. Internship Program and a Corporation and Non-Profit Section Internship Program.
