The Ultimate in Performance and Protection RE Just because a motor oil bears API and ILSAC certifications doesn’t make it a top quality oil. Those are good standards that tell you the product you’re buying meets particular requirements for your vehicle. But, that doesn’t insure that daily production meets those standards, and they are minimum requirements. Just because a company calls it a premium motor oil doesn’t make it a top quality oil. Premium is a marketing term, not an oil classification or certification. At Smitty’s, we determined that the right way to become an industry leader was to make a higher quality product at a competitive price. There’s only one way to do that in oil: 1. Use the absolute best ingredients 2. Develop to exceed all ratings and approvals; 3. Use the best additive package available to provide the absolute highest performance and greatest protection; 4. Maintain a state-of-the-art laboratory, actively involved in the daily production of motor oil to insure the highest possible quality. 5. Manufacture and package the oil under the most stringent of standards and tolerances in a rigorous process involving laboratory testing and reformulation of every batch of oil throughout the entire process. Advanced Quality Assurance. It’s a costly, time consuming process, well beyond industry standards and practices, but it is your assurance that every ounce of Super S Motor Oil is doing its absolute best for the life, protection and performance of your vehicle. The Ultimate in Performance & Protection UR VI is the major brand of Smitty’s Supply, Inc. It’s More Than Just Slippery What Does Motor Oil Really Do? Base Oils, Additives and Quality Assurance What About GM dexos1™ and Synthetic Motor Oils? How Often Should I Change My Motor Oil and Why? Certifications: API and ILSAC - What Do They Mean? Beyond The Certifications Aren’t All Oils Essentially the Same? What Makes One Oil Better Than Another? What Makes Multi-Flo The Better Motor Oil? So, What Does Motor Oil Really Do? How Often Should I Change My Motor Oil? Yes, it Lubricates... Two factors determine when you should change oil: when it loses its ability to protect your motor and when the filter no longer removes harmful particles and contaminants from the oil. You may not see it or notice it right away, but critical damage is happening to your engine when the oil and filter aren’t changed at the recommended regular intervals. But, get a little oil on your fingers. You can’t just wipe it off. It clings to your skin. It does the same with motor parts. It seems odd, almost contradictory; but oil must flow, shear (or slide) and cling, all at the same time! It needs to act like glue, steel and water in order to do its job. Special additives help base oils do this better, more efficiently and effectively. It Cools... Oil helps to carry heat away from parts, another reason oil circulation is so important. A lot of heat is generated at points of high shear (or stress), so oil must circulate to cool and maintain its ability to function. The most wear occurs when you start your engine, especially cold starts. It takes time for oil to flow up and about all of the moving parts. Multi-Flo is specially formulated to reduce this type of wear, helping to extend the life of your engine. But, you must regularly maintain your oil and filter to realize that protection. It Cleans... Acids (which degrade oil) and other products of combustion invade the inside of your motor, cause internal wear, and degrade additives. Detergents in oil aren’t really like soap; they’re additives that hold harmful deposits, particles and chemicals in suspension to be captured in the oil filter as oil circulates through the motor. Oil Most auto manufacturers recommend changing oil every 3,000 miles. This is a safe average for normal driving under normal conditions. At this point contaminants have built up and additives have been depleted and/ or broken down so the oil is no longer protecting your engine and the additives have lost their effectiveness. The rate of wear will increase and damage will occur. It protects against Corrosion... The oil film keeps oxygen and corrosive gases from getting to metal parts so they don’t oxidize or corrode. If that happens, metal surfaces get rough, oil can’t protect them as well, and they wear quickly. It Fills Gaps; Protects Seals... The microscopic space between ring and cylinder wall allows the pressure of combustion to leak by, robbing your motor of power. The viscous nature of oil fills that gap and helps to maintain pressure in the cylinder which gives you more power and better gas mileage. It also fills the gap in seals and keeps seals in good condition. What about 2011 model year GM vehicles? General Motors established a specification in excess of GF-5 trademarked as dexos1™ beginning with 2011 model year gasoline engine vehicles and is a 5W-30 grade. For 2011 model year (or newer) GM vehicles, use Super S dexos1™, fully tested, licensed and approved by GM for warranty service. Super S dexos1™ 5W-30 is a full synthetic formulation that exceeds the protection and performance specifications established for dexos1™. GM now recommends this for 2010 and older GM vehicles, especially Corvette and Cadillac. Oil Filter Install a new filter when you change oil. Most good filters will work up to about 4,000 miles under normal conditions, and then the filter media is filled up with the contaminants it removes from the oil. Once the filter fills up it stops filtering. The filter goes into a bypass mode so oil will continue to flow, but so will all the garbage in your oil – and it will flow right through your motor and slowly destroy it. Changing your oil and filter every 3,000 miles helps to insure the best protection and longest life for your engine. What about Synthetic Motor Oil? Consider Super S SuperSyn Full Synthetic Motor Oils if your vehicle operates under extreme conditions - heavy loads, extended high rpm, extreme hot or cold temperatures, excessive start and stop or when you want the ultimate protection for your engine. Super S SuperSyn provides the ultimate in performance and protection with a 100% synthetic oil made to the same standards of quality as Multi-Flo. About Base Oils, Additives and AQA™ Base Oil This is refined lubricating oil, straight from the refinery, the basic ingredient of motor oil. The quality, purity and composition is absolutely critical. But, to meet the AQA Standards for Multi-Flo, multiple base oils are repeatedly tested, combined and tested again until an ideal base oil is created. This process alone sets Multi-Flo apart from other motor oils. Additives Special chemicals and compounds are blended with base oil to further improve or modify certain characteristics of the oil. Other compounds give motor oil additional properties. The specific blend of chemicals and compounds is called an Additive Package and includes, among other things, antiwear, extreme pressure and anti-foaming agents, dispersants, detergents, seal conditioners, and viscosity and friction modifiers. The Super S Multi-Flo Additive Package is an extensive and advanced formulation providing superior performance and protection for your engine. API and ILSAC Certifications1 Super S Motor Oils are licensed to show the API and ILSAC certification marks. An oil displaying the ILSAC certification starburst mark meets the current engine protection standard and fuel economy requirements of the International Lubricant Standardization and Approval Committee (ILSAC), a joint effort of U.S. and Japanese automobile manufacturers. Most automobile manufacturers recommend oils that carry the API Certification Mark. API’s Service Symbol and Certification Mark identify quality engine oils for gasoline- and diesel-powered vehicles. Oils displaying these marks meet performance requirements set by U.S. and international vehicle and engine manufacturers and the lubricant industry. More than 500 companies worldwide participate in this voluntary program, which is backed by a marketplace sampling and testing program. 1Quoted from the API (American Petroleum Institute) web site. AQA Manufacturing Process We choose to provide higher levels of performance and maintain stricter standards and practices than these industry requirements. You get better protection, higher performance and it will help to extend the life of your motor. Strict standards, constant testing, special blending processes, filling and packaging are all part of AQA, our Advanced Quality Assurance Standards and Practices, a rigorous quality control system that provides the purity, consistency and highly refined properties to make Super S Multi-Flo: The Premium Choice Among Premium Motor Oils. Not all motor oils are made like Super S Motor Oils... Because of the higher standards and tighter tolerances by which it is produced, and because we use only the highest quality base oils and additives, Super S Multi-Flo is the better choice for your vehicle.
