Thecourseintroducesstudentstothemajorthemesinthehistoryofmodern
imperialBritainandtosomeofthewayshistorianshavetriedtomakesenseofitall.
Suchthemesinclude(butnotlimitedto)thechangingpatternsoflifeduringthose
centuries,thedevelopmentofmodernidentitiesandnotionsoftheself,the
emergenceofamodern,commercialcivilsociety,theriseofindustrialcapitalism,
liberalism,themodernstate,andimperialandtotalwar(formoredetailsseethe
lectureschedulebelow).Wewillpayparticularattentiontogenderintermsofboth
“livedexperience”andrepresentationsofpower(anditscritique),andtothe
transnationalnatureofmodernBritishhistory,largely,butnotonly,throughthe
historyoftheeconomic,political,andculturalfoundationsofthemodernBritish
empire.
Thecourseconsistsoftwolecturesperweekandonediscussionsection.Attendance
tobothisrequired.Thetextbookismerelyateachingaidandisnotasubstitutefor
lectures(mostofthematerialcoveredinthelecturesdoesnotappearinthe
textbook).
