Visual Arts (K) – 3rd Lesson
Aim: To introduce the visual arts -- how we talk about art, what are
some famous works of art.
Objectives: Terms: lines, Joan Miro, Henri Matisse, patterns, Hokusai
Material: Lines are all around us in nature and art. Lines come in all
kinds – straight, curved, zigzag and wavy.
Sensory: (S) Spell L I N E. Write Z I G Z A G. (T) Hand over hand,
draw lines – straight, curved, zigzag and wavy.
Material: Straight lines seem to point us in a direction, like arrows.
Curved lines make us think of motion, like a ball rolling. Zigzag lines are
full of energy, like lightning bolts. Wavy lines can be calm, like ocean
waves lapping on a beach.
Sensory: (S) Spell W A V Y. (T) Point out lines around the room
(windows, doors, clock, etc.) Describe what types of lines you see in
each object.

Material: Here is a painting by Joan Miro (ZHU-ahn mih-ROW) in
which the lines are easy to see. Miro called his painting People and Dog
in the Sun. Miro painted what he saw in his dreams.
Sensory: (T) Show a picture of Miro’s painting. Point out the different
lines. Turn the picture upside down to show the boy standing on his
feet.

Material: Here is a painting by Henri Matisse (ma-TEECE). This
painting is called The Purple Robe. Notice the bright, joyful colors and
the many bold, thick lines. There are also lines that are like each other.
These repeating lines are called patterns.
Sensory: (T) Show a picture of the painting by Matisse. Point out the
patterns on the wallpaper behind the woman. Point out the other
patterns – on the robe and on the vase on the table.

Material: Here is a painting by the Japanese artist Hokusai (HOE-coosye). It is made up completely of lines. Hokusai named this drawing
Tuning the Samisen. It is a picture of a musician getting her instrument
ready to play.
Sensory: (T) Show a picture of the painting by Hokusai. Ask - – can
you see some thin lines in the drawing? How about some thick lines?
Do some things in the painting look soft to touch; do some look hard and
smooth?
