Objectives: Terms: lines, Joan Miro, Henri Matisse, patterns, Hokusai Material: Lines are all around us in nature and art. Lines come in all kinds – straight, curved, zigzag and wavy. Sensory: (S) Spell L I N E. Write Z I G Z A G. (T) Hand over hand, draw lines – straight, curved, zigzag and wavy. Material: Straight lines seem to point us in a direction, like arrows. Curved lines make us think of motion, like a ball rolling. Zigzag lines are full of energy, like lightning bolts. Wavy lines can be calm, like ocean waves lapping on a beach. Sensory: (S) Spell W A V Y. (T) Point out lines around the room (windows, doors, clock, etc.) Describe what types of lines you see in each object. Miro called his painting People and Dog in the Sun. Miro painted what he saw in his dreams. Sensory: (T) Show a picture of Miro’s painting. Point out the different lines. Turn the picture upside down to show the boy standing on his feet. Sensory: (T) Show a picture of the painting by Matisse. Point out the patterns on the wallpaper behind the woman. Point out the other patterns – on the robe and on the vase on the table.
