In math, we are still reviewing place value and practicing writing

In math, we are still reviewing place value
and practicing writing numbers in standard
form, word form, and expanded form. We will
also begin to focus on comparing and ordering
numbers by looking at place value. Keep
practicing those math facts every night!
Don’t forget to use Reflex Math as a tool to
practice your facts.

In reader’s workshop, we will continue to focus on
inferring with our reading. We will use some
different literature to model good inferring
skills. In writer’s workshop, we are starting our
unit on essay writing. We are learning that
essays are writing to think. We will be practicing
with a lot of “try its” as we go through the
writing process. We also will use some great
mentor text as we immerse ourselves into the
essay world. In word study, our focus will be the
impact of Greek mythology on modern language
and culture. In word study our word this week is
ornate. Each day we have a different activity
that involves the word of the week. The students
are also creating a word dictionary that we add to
throughout the year.
My scientists did a great job in the lab last week
with our fruit snacks lab. We used our observing
skills and were able to make great inferences and
conclusions. Over the next few weeks we will be
working in our economics unit so we will come back
to science after that is finished. Our next big
unit will cover physical science (force and motion).
This week we are working on preparations for our
upcoming School of Economics trip. Students are
applying for different jobs and some are going
through the interview process. We will also learn
about what is economics and about starting a
business.
