2016-2017 Hamilton Southeastern High School Financial Aid & Scholarship Guide INTRODUCTION The 2016-2017 scholarship and financial aid guide has been set up by the Guidance Department to assist HSE parents and students in their search for scholarships and/or financial aid. Students and parents should use Naviance to access the most up to date scholarship information. Our goal is to make the process easier and more efficient for you. Please do not hesitate to contact the counseling office for assistance during the school year. The Guidance department phone number is 594-4193. Throughout this scholarship guide you will find references to web sites and addresses. The Internet has become a vital part of scholarship/financial aid searches. If you do not have access to the Internet at home and would like to look up something for yourself, please let the Guidance department know and we will set up a time for you to use one of our computers. SCHOLARSHIP SEARCHES Scholarships are usually based upon student GPA, SAT/ACT score, community involvement, and future field of study. The “stronger” the resume you have, the more scholarships you will be eligible for. Keep in mind that scholarship competition is extremely competitive at all levels. The best advice we can give is to apply for everything and anything for which you are eligible. You should put in the time and effort needed to make a superior application. This will give you the competitive edge you need. Always contact the colleges/universities you will be applying to and ask what scholarships are available. Typically, smaller private colleges will offer more scholarships and financial aid to offset their higher tuition rates. Always be aware of what is available at or through Hamilton Southeastern, check our website, and this scholarship guide. Finally, make sure you check out www.fastweb.com Fastweb has a database of over 1.3 million different scholarships offered by thousands of different institutions and organizations worldwide worth over 3 billion dollars. After entering your resume into the Fastweb database, you will receive a list of scholarships for which you are eligible to apply. This is one of the best search engines on the market. 2 Free Application for Student Aid (FAFSA) We will have FAFSA information in the Guidance Office by mid-November. The FAFSA can be downloaded from www.fafsa.ed.gov or by calling 800-433-3243. Make sure you complete this as soon as possible after January 1, 2016. That is the date after which the federal government will begin accepting applications. Even if you feel you will not qualify for any federal aid, it is still a good idea to submit an application anyway. Many independent scholarships require a copy of the FAFSA to go along with the application. Also, please note: to be considered for any aid from the state of Indiana, the FAFSA must be completed and received by the Indiana due date posted on the FAFSA website. This date is typically in the beginning of March.
