Suggestions For Using Pictures of Handwashing Steps 1. Place pictures of each step of the handwashing procedure (see next 3 pages) on wall/mirror above the sink (not on the wall beside the sink where they would be more difficult to see). • NOTE: There are 2 different pictures for step 6 (turning off the faucet). Use the picture that reflects type of faucet used. • FYI...Some teachers have chosen to make their own set of handwashing pictures so that children in the class are represented in the pictures. 2. Teach children to “read the pictures” one step at a time. For example, point to each picture saying, "Read the picture. What do you do first? What do you do next?" 3. Also, encourage children to count to 20 or sing the handwashing song or any song (e.g., ABC song or Row, Row, Row Your Boat) twice to ensure children wash hands for 20 seconds, scrubbing tops and bottoms of hands, in between fingers, etc. 1 Turn on water using arm. 2 Wet your hands. 3 Get soap.
