What is Borderlands?
n Please keep me informed of Borderlands
events and activities.
Borderlands is a registered charity that works with
disadvantaged people in the Bristol inner-city area. This
includes asylum seekers and refugees who have fled
to Britain from all over the world seeking safety and
freedom. They have come to Britain for many reasons
including torture, false imprisonment or the murder
of family members because of their ethnicity, political
or religious beliefs. These are people exactly the same
as you and me, but their life experiences have forced
them to abandon their families, jobs and homelands
to seek sanctuary in Britain. Unfortunately, they are
often met here with suspicion or disbelief, racism and
poverty. Destitution is a very real prospect. Sofa-surfing
or living on the streets makes them vulnerable to
violence, exploitation and abuse. As a consequence
they rely on charities like Borderlands to help them.

Why is our work important?
Our help and services are offered to people on the
basis of need and free of charge. People coming
to Borderlands have often endured dreadful and
life-changing events. By sharing their experiences
and feelings with others who have had similar
problems they feel less isolated and more able to
find a way forward. Through listening support and
advice, friendship, the opportunity to participate in
training, assistance in finding accommodation or
simply through giving them a hot meal and clothes,
Borderlands offers hope to people who may see
themselves as lost or abandoned.
How can I help?
What do we do?
• Make a one-off donation. We rely
entirely on the generosity of our
supporters to be able to deliver our
much needed services.
Borderlands offers practical help and a safe place
where people can meet with others like themselves.
We help people overcome the loneliness, isolation and
exclusion they feel. Volunteers and users help to run
our Drop-in, teach English language classes, prepare a
hot meal, participate in indoor recreational activities like
board games or table tennis. Perhaps most importantly,
however, Borderlands offers a warm welcome and
support to people who receive little kindness.
• We need volunteers to help deliver our
services: preparing, cooking and serving
food; helping our users to learn English
and computer skills.
• Speak at a local community or faith
group to raise awareness of Borderlands
and funds for our work.
• Run a local fundraising event.
• Make a regular donation by completing
the Standing Order form overleaf. You
can change or cancel your Standing Order
at any time by contacting your bank.
• Leave a legacy to Borderlands in your Will.
if you are a UK taxpayer and would like Borderlands to treat all
your qualifying gifts of money made from 6th April 2014 and
in the future as Gift Aid donations, please ensure you have
completed the Contact Details section above and sign and
date this Gift Aid declaration.
I confirm that I have paid or will pay an amount of Income Tax or
Capital Gains Tax for each tax year (April 6 to April 5) that is at least
equal to the amount of tax that all the Charities or Community
Amateur Sports Clubs that I donate to will reclaim on my gifts for
that tax year. I understand that other taxes such as Council Tax or
VAT do not qualify. I understand that Borderlands will reclaim 25p
of tax for every £1 that I give on or after April 6 2014.
