From Ed’s Desk
Dear Friends,
I am always reluctant
to suspend worship
because of weather, but
based on the driving
conditions around here
on Sunday, I thought
we made the safe,
prudent decision. And
some of you know that
we tried a technological
solution, broadcasting
our worship service on
Facebook, making it
available to anyone with
an internet connection.
As of late Sunday, several thousand people in
many states (and
Ireland!) has viewed the
video and thus, in some
way, shared in the
worship life of First
Presbyterian Church.

one another in the pews in
our sanctuary. In particular,
Grace and Peace,
we were scheduled to share
the sacrament of the Lord’s
Ed
Supper on Sunday, which
means we missed the particular experience of passing
plates and trays to one
another, person to person,
experiencing the joy of
communion.
So I hope you are as eager
as I am for Sunday to return,
so we can gather again in
our Sunday school classrooms and in our sanctuary,
to take delight in the ties
that bind us together. Until
then, I hope you will stay
201st Birthday Celebration
Please make plans to join us for our 201st Birthday
Celebration on Sunday, January 22. We will have guest
preacher Larry Lyon (his bio is on the next page) and the
choir will perform the Church Anthem with orchestra
during both services. There will be a covered dish lunch in
Memorial Hall immediately following the 11 o’clock
service. FPC will provide the meat and ask you to bring a
side, salad, or dessert. No reservations needed, and donations are welcome. Around 1:30, after the lunch, there will
be a ceremonial closing of the time capsule as we place it
back into the cornerstone to be opened in 2117.

Rev. Dr. Lawrence Lyon - Guest Preacher on Sunday, January 22
Our Bicentennial Year comes
to an end on January 22 when
we celebrate the church’s
birthday, and the beginning of
its 201st year. There are other
multiple generation families in
the church, but the Durfey
family may hold the record for
longevity. We warmly welcome Larry Lyon, a descendant
of the Durfey’s as guest preacher at our final Bicentennial
Worship Sunday. Not a stranger to our pulpit, he coofficiated at the weddings of Paul Hoover IV (now a FPC
Deacon) and Sally; and of Alston Hoover and Will Hayes
(grandson of Al Edwards); plus the funerals of his Uncle
Paul Hoover in 2000 and his Aunt Dot Hoover in 2016.
Paul Hoover was an elder for many years and served as
clerk of the session. Larry was never actually a member of
First Presbyterian, and yet, the church occupies and
important place in his family history as well as in his own
personal journey. His grandparents, Cary and Margaret
Durfey, were married in the sanctuary in 1914. Cary was a
deacon and President of the Vanguard Class in 1918. A
stained glass window in his honor remains in the Vanguard
Room. His mother, Betty Whitmel Durfey, grew up at FPC.
She and his father, Bud Lyons were married in the sanctuary on December 26, 1946. Larry says of his memories at
FPC, “I have many memories of these occasions over the
years. Oddly enough, while never having actually lived in
Raleigh or been a member of FPC, the church always has
seemed somewhat like ‘home’ to me. The Durfey clan historically was large, noisy, outgoing, and joyful. I have been
so blessed to be a part of it all. Two memories stand out
and tie together: the Sunday morning the extended family
gathered in the Vanguard Room for the dedication of the
stained glass window in our grandfather’s memory, and the
afternoon, decades later, when we gathered in the very
same room in the minutes before the funeral of our beloved aunt, Aunt Dot. One room, several decades, so many
memories, of a sacred place, and of a loving family.”
Habitat for Humanity Downtown Coalition Build Begins January 16
FPC is building a Habitat House with faith communities in
downtown Raleigh beginning on January 16 (MLK day) with
a wall build starting at 9 am at the Habitat Construction
Facility located at 2615 Westinghouse Blvd, Raleigh. (This
is one of our FPC Serves events in conjunction with MLK
Day of Service.) The evening before at 5 pm there will be a
MLK Worship Service at Martin Street Baptist Church
open to all members of the coalition. In addition to MLK
day, our work days include February 11, March 4 and
March 18. Please put these dates on your calendar and join
us to build a home for Al and Terry Young and their four
children. The house will be built at 925 Skinner Dr. in the
Crosstowne neighborhood—the same neighborhood we
worked in last year. Sign up at http://vhub.at/
downtownraleigh. It is very important to sign up through
this website. Work at the house will also be underway
every Thursday, Friday and Saturday after January 16 until
the house is complete. If our selected workdays do not fit
your schedule or you want to work more than just those
days, you may choose to work other days as well. Just sign
up through the volunteer hub website.
Haiti Summer Trip Information Meetings
Once again FPC and White Memorial members will be traveling to Haiti from Wednesday, June 14 to Wednesday, June 21,
2017. Our projects will include running the Cite Soleil medical
and dental clinic, distributing reading glasses and re-roofing
houses. We welcome adults, college students and high school
youth/parents who are flexible, willing to work hard, and interested in serving the Haitian community. There will also be spiritual and cultural opportunities including attending church and
experiencing Haitian culture. To find out more attend an information meeting on either Sunday, January 22nd or February
12th at 12:15 in the Ed Greer room on the 3rd floor of the Edge
Building. For more information or if you cannot attend please
contact Carol Anne Moehring ([email protected] or
919-833-4070) or Chris Northup ([email protected]
or 919-387-8154).
