The Periodic Table organizes all of the Earth’s elements into categories based on specific properties. Essential Question: How do we define and identify matter? Directions: Step I: (DUE MONDAY, OCT. 12TH:) Complete the writing task below What is identity? How would you describe yourself? Some options to think about: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Physical characteristics: short, tall, small, big Personality: chill and mellow, cool calm and collected, crazy, loud, outgoing, short-tempered, shy, etc. Internal Identity: the one that you don’t show the outside world. Contrasting Identities: between your private, internal identity and the identity you show everyone else. Conflicting Identities: how you are socialized versus how you want to behave Proud: What aspect of your identity/personality are you particularly proud of Write a short description of yourself (1-2 paragraphs) for each of the six prompts above. You will turn in your short description hand written or typed with at least two symbols or pictures that help in identifying you (you can brainstorm with bullet notes below): Step II: (DUE WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 14TH:) Complete a Webquest on the periodic table regions and families. Guide will be handed out in class. Step III : (DUE MONDAY, OCT. 19TH) Complete the table below using what you found in your Periodic Table Families Webquest. The purpose is to start researching the families on the periodic table that you may identify with your characteristics and the family’s characteristics. The purpose is to start researching as many elements as possible that you may identify with based on one of your characteristics and one of the element’s characteristics. Step VII: (Due THURSDAY, OCT. 29TH) MySpace, MyElement: MySpace Page on your Digital Portfolio You will create a webpage using a template of a MySpace page to describe and give information about the specific element you have chosen. The webpage template can be found on the class share drive at HTHCV and should include EACH of the 6 categories: 1. General Info (checklist): ____Element name ____symbol ____atomic number ____ atomic mass ____most common state of matter (solid, liquid or gas) ____age (how many years ago was it discovered) ____ location (where it was discovered) ____size of atomic radius (is the atomic size generally smaller or bigger than the rest of the elements in the period?) ____ionization energy (why is this number big or small?) ____electronegativity (why is this numbers so high or low?) ____a picture 2. Latest Blog: Include and describe traits you personally have in common with your elements (3 from your original list of 5). 3. About Me: _____A description of the element including real world examples (at least 3) of where the element is found in nature _____ Include a picture for each example. _____This section should also include the group and period number _____ Include the family the element belongs to _____ Include a picture of the Bohr atomic model for your atom (you may use Paint to create it) 4. My Different Faces: Each element has an isotope. Pick an isotope of your element and describe what the isotope is used for, how it differs from the more popular form of the element. Include a picture of the isotope. 5. Friends: (at least 4) Descriptions of other elements you'd be friends with (or bond well with) include an example/picture of each element and an explanation for why you’d be attracted to these elements. 6. Details: Status-Is the element more commonly found single or bound with another element. (single/in a relationship). Explain why. Hobbies- Where does the element like to hang out, what does it like to do? Step VIII: (Due WEDNESDAY, OCT. 28TH) Peer Critique Complete a peer review and critique worksheet for two other classmates.
