Welcome to
Take5
Spring has
finally arrived
and what a
wonderful Spring
we are having, with the
flowering bulbs and blossom
looking particularly good
this year!
I know how much everyone enjoys
having the better weather for activities
and being able to get out and about, but
rain or shine there are plenty of activities
happening across our Care South homes
throughout the year – as evidenced in
this second edition of Take 5.
We are looking forward to our annual
Care South Stars Awards ceremony
which will be held on 20 June. I
understand we have been receiving
a record number of nominations – the
judges will have a difficult task!
Michael Peden has just retired as our
Director of HR and Training after nearly
seven years with Care South. We are
grateful for his contribution, particularly
with the development of the Care South
Stars Awards and the development and
launch of our HEART Values. We wish
Michael every happiness in his retirement.
I am sure you will all extend a warm
welcome to our new Interim HR Director,
Alison Thorne-Henderson, as she visits our
homes and offices in the coming weeks.
From the feedback received, it is clear
that staff like our new look staff magazine,
with all the news, competitions and
recipes. Don’t forget it is your magazine
and we welcome ideas for features in
future issues.
Meanwhile the Chairman and I hope to
see many of you over the next couple
of months as we do our visits to all the
homes and home care offices.

Ashley (right) competing in the
Weymouth Half Marathon
A marathon effort by Ashley Smith
Ashley Smith, Interim Deputy Manager at Maiden
Castle House, successfully ran the Weymouth Half
Marathon, running the course in a very impressive
1 hour, 52 minutes, in spite of the wet conditions.
Commenting on his run, Ashley said: “I’d like to say a huge thank you
to everyone who supported me so generously and for those who came
to cheer me on. I wanted to raise money for the Residents’ Amenity
Fund as I have seen first-hand the impact a varied and social activities
programme has on the health and wellbeing of our residents.”
Ashley raised more than £300 for the Residents’ Amenity Fund
– well done!

A fond farewell
from Michael
After nearly seven
years at Care South, I
am saying ‘au revoir’ to my
friends and colleagues.
Alpacas at Elizabeth House
The spirit of Dr Dolittle
at Care South!
Animal therapy is widely recognised for
its calming benefits, and homes across
Care South have been welcoming fourlegged friends for special visits over
the last few months.
Firm favourites are the alpacas, which have visited
Buxton House, Elizabeth House, Queensmead,
Templeman House and Castle Dene. These friendly
and well-behaved creatures have already been back
for repeat visits and residents
love their furry visitors!
Therapy cat, Socks,
and Jasmine the
donkey visit St
Martins Grange
The years have flown by but I can honestly say that
it’s been a very busy and happy part of my life. One of
the biggest impacts for me has been to witness the
wonderful care delivered around the clock, every day,
every year by so many dedicated and professional people.
One of my proudest involvements, with the full support
of the Care South Senior Management Team, has been
the Care South Stars Awards, which pay tribute to our
staff, who all in their various roles make such a difference
to the lives of residents, service users and their families.
The Awards have gone from strength to strength and I
am very honoured to have been invited to be one of the
judges at this year’s Awards.
I am also very proud to have been involved in the
development and launch of our HEART Values – which
confirm the standards Care South has maintained since
its very beginning.
One of our Values is of course teamwork and I could not
have achieved anything during my time at Care South
without the support and contribution of my HR and
Training teams, for which I offer my heartfelt thanks.
I wish you all every happiness in the future and
continuing success for Care South.
Goodbye and good luck!

the home’s Activities Lead.
Hannah hopes to bring her natural enthusiasm to her
new role and commented: “My favourite part of my
new job is being able to bring residents together to

“I’m looking to host more group activities such as
bingo nights, quizzes and days out, as these are
events everyone can get involved with.”
Alison Crane, new

and the residents and staff
all seemed so happy.
Everyone across Care South
has been very welcoming
and I am settling in well
to my new role.”
A new Activities Assistant at Fremington Manor
Sophie Sanders has been appointed as the Activities Assistant

Natalie Hosking, Care Team Leader
at Queensmead
Natalie has been working at Queensmead for four years,
having joined as a Care Assistant. She progressed to
Senior Care Assistant and completed an NVQ Level 2
Apprenticeship in Health and Social Care, before being
promoted to the position of Senior Carer and, latterly,

“I was attracted to Care South by the HEART Values,
which are reflected across the Company and can be
seen in action every single day. Queensmead has a
very welcoming and homely atmosphere and we are
all passionate about the quality of care provided to our
residents. There is also a fantastic bond between staff
and residents, which has a really positive impact and
makes the home a happy place to be.
“I ensure that the
staff on duty are

follow the HEART
Values. The most
important, and the best part of my job, is spending
quality time with the residents, ensuring that their wishes
and needs are met and that they are happy and content.
I try to encourage a positive, upbeat atmosphere at the
home as well as being on-hand with a reassuring hug
and kind words at difficult times.

“A career in care is hugely rewarding; knowing that you
have done your very best to ensure the happiness, health,
well-being and safety of residents is incredibly satisfying.
The sense of reward when you finish your shift is
something that I don’t believe could be matched
in any other career.”

Dickie Dore, Chef at Sussexdown
Country House Care
You have been the Chef at Sussexdown since 1996
– what inspired you to work in the care industry?
Sussexdown Chicken Salad
Dickie from Sussexdown has given us
this innovative recipe for a deliciously
different chicken salad – give it a try as a
change from limp lettuce and tomatoes!
Ingredients (serves 4)
2 cooked chicken breasts
125g tin of peas
I used to work at Hedley Court in Epsom, Surrey, the
rehabilitation unit for injured servicemen. My work
there really inspired me and when it came to moving
on, I knew I wanted to continue to work in care.
Sussexdown offered a great platform for me to cook
for those who may require special diets and nutrition.
4 pickled gherkins
How do you plan and create your menus?
Mayonnaise
It is really important to consider the time of year and
use seasonal fruit and vegetables, as these help me
to make great tasting dishes – it also keeps the menu
fresh with plenty of options for the residents to choose
from. I really like traditional dishes and these are
always a firm favourite with our residents!
Salt and pepper to taste
How do you organise and run a busy kitchen?
I have worked in plenty of busy kitchens over the
years and I have learnt that organising the menus
and weekly stock really helps to keep on top of
everything. It is also key to work closely with the
rest of the kitchen team to ensure everyone
understands what is happening in the kitchen and
what is coming up, it means we work smoothly and
have plenty of support.
What do you love most about your job?
The residents! It’s great to engage with the residents
and hear all their life stories – the men and women
have plenty of interesting tales! It is also a pleasure to
cook healthy and nutritious food and understand what
the residents love about our menus.
