3rd/4th Grade
Power Hour
Purpose:
To provide students with rigorous and relevant extensions of the TEKS and
district curriculum
Directions:
Each teacher in the grade level will teach a unit of study with a focus in one of the core
subject areas (math, science, reading, social studies)
To begin, each unit will consist of five 45 minute lessons which will be taught during the
grade level’s tutoring/enrichment time.
One teacher in the grade level will monitor Successmaker during this time. This teacher
will need to develop a 45 minute lesson to teach Successmaker students one day a week.
This lesson will be taught on Wednesdays.
After completing a unit, the classes will rotate until each class has done all units.
Grade level will develop a new set of units and begin the process again.
Guidelines
All units of study should incorporate project-based learning and require students to use
higher level thinking skills (no worksheets)
Science lesson should be hands on experiments that follow the scientific method and
prepare students for science fair
Math lessons should incorporate Exemplars problem solving.
All units of study should reinforce the TEKS
There should be a summative assessment of student learning at the end of the unit
(example: rubric to score student project), but it will not be a recorded grade.
Requirements
Each teacher will need to complete a lesson plan for the unit of study and turn it in to the
team leader TWO weeks before unit begins
Team leader will turn in all the grade level units of study ONE week before units begin to
