Wilkerson Weekly Catch up on all the latest news! ‘$1.00 + tax’ Monday, December 6, 2016 Conformity Misunderstood Introducing Claire Exclusive interview with student of the week Claire Campanelli What is your favorite part of language arts? My favorite part of language arts is writing. When you write, there’s no right or wrong answer, and it’s a great opportunity to use your imagination What interests do you have? I enjoy learning about ballet, exercising, and playing computer games. What is the key to your future success? I think one key to success (in my opinion)is if you want something more than other people, you just have to work harder to get it, and you just have to believe. Do you enjoy doing language arts projects? What do you think students could learn when doing them? Yes, but the fact that we have so many makes it stressful and hard to complete them on time. Even if it takes you much longer than normal The True Meaning of Conformity Conformity. What is the first thing you think of when you hear that word? Probably a fictional character trying to fit in at school, or maybe a cute picture of a red apple standing out in a bunch of green apples representing non-conformity. It’s not that Greek/Latin projects Without roots, the English language wouldn’t be here. On November 21, 2016, the Greek/Latin project was due to prove how well the students knew about the understanding of Greek and Latin roots. From Greekymons (imaginary pokemons made of Greek and Latin roots) to Phobiologies (made up phobias) to creative new inventions, the students of Mrs. Wilkerson combined their creativeness and understanding to invent amazing Greek and Latin projects. Students could choose from inventions, Greekymons, greek and latin spellbooks, phobiologies, and made up cities. Examples of creative simple. There are many examples of conformity that you might’ve never thought twice about. Such as following rules anywhere, or wearing the same sports uniform as your teammates. Conformity is all greekymons you should try your best no matter what. Continued on pg 3 under Claire Homework around us, whether we realize it or not. Brainteasers There are two doors. One door leads to a pot of gold and one door leads to a pit of snakes. There are two identical guards. One can only tell the truth, the other only tells lies. You do not know which is which. You can ask a guard one question to find out which door is which, but you do not know what guard you are asking. What question could you ask either guard to find out which is the good door? A man worked at a high security institution. He tried to log into his computer and the computer denied his password. He then remembered that the passwords to the computers were reset every month for security reasons. He called his boss for the new password. The man said, “Boss, my old password is out of date.” The boss said, “Yes, it is. The new password is different, but if you listen closely you’ll be able to figure out the new one. Your new password has the same amount of letters as the old one, and four of the letters are the same. The man then logged on with no trouble at all. What was the old password? What was the new one? More Brainteasers on page 3 Conformity Continued from page 1 ‘The true Meaning of Conformity’ Although conformity can send the message of working as a well-oiled machine, there are also examples of conformity being a bad thing. Maybe you’re conforming by walking behind a person who has a sign on their back saying “follow me”. You probably won’t realize that that person is doing the exact same thing as you are, walking behind someone else, and that you all are either walking the wrong way, or walking in circles. This is a metaphor, of course. “Going with the crowd” is not always a good thing. Especially if no one in the crowd actually knows what they’re There are good books. Then there are great books. But you rarely find amazing books that you just want to sink into and read over and over, until the pages are worn and you can quote the book. One of these is Walk Two Moons by Sharon Creech. An amazing book, with a complex and interesting plot, this book definitely is a book you will just keep picking up. Salamanca Tree Hiddle is an average 13 year old girl with a mysterious background. While on a trip to Lewiston, Ohio, she tells the story of Phoebe Winterbottom, a girl whose mother has disappeared. As she gets closer and closer to the end of Phoebe’s story, and Lewiston, she reveals her own bittersweet story of her mother and her blackberry kisses. This book really taps into your emotions and makes you think. A 5 out of 5 is perfect for this. Another “have to read story” is Escape From Mr. Lemoncello’s Library. A very well put together mystery, this book is packed with puzzles, clues, and riddles. Join Kyle and his friends as they race to escape from the world renowned Mr. Lemoncello’s new library using only their wits and some of the best books the library has to offer. They will stumble and fall along they way, but count on them to always get back on their feet. This is a 5 out of 5, because reading shouldn’t just be something you do to get over with it. It should make you wonder. doing. For example,, you could walk into an elevator and see that everyone is standing backwards. Not wanting to be different, you turn around, and suddenly, you’re normal, but not really. There are good times to conform, but when people are spinning around in an elevator and taking their hat on and off, it is probably not a good time to conform. Claire Continued from pg 1 What did you think of the Perseverance Cafe? What was your favorite project? I really liked the Perseverance Cafe because we got to hear about each group's intervewee and the struggles they had to go through. It was fun to hear each group present and to see how much work each group put into their project. Morgan’s art piece about the dog with the wheelchair was good. The Birthdays 2-Sera Matthew, 2 Perseverance December period, Language arts Cafe On Wednesday November 16, Mrs. Wilkerson’s class hosted a Perseverance Cafe in the Media Center. The Perseverance Cafe was a wonderful event that left Brainteasers “Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by it’s ability to climb a tree, it will live it’s whole life believing that it is stupid.” Albert Einstein This conformity quote means that everybody has their unique talents and that when judging everybody the same way, and not for their unique talents, you may not realize that someone terrible at one thing may be wonderful at something else. In short, this quote means that everybody is unique and by judging all people the same way, you may overlook how special each individual is. everybody who attended with a valuable lesson to take away. Animal of the Week - Axolotl ● The axolotl is found in lakes in Central Mexico. ● This strange creature has the amazing ability to regenerate damaged body parts such as it’s limbs, it’s tail, and even it’s heart! ● The axolotl’s name comes from the ancient Aztec language and loosely means ‘water dog.’ ● Save the axolotls! Due to the lakes it lives in being drained as well as the introduction of non native species such as carp, the axolotl is on the endangered species list!
