Summer Term Y1 Week 5 - Stillness Infants School

The Next Week in Year One
Week Beginning 15th May 2017
Year One Dates:
Trip to Horniman – Monday 22nd of May
Next week as part of our topic, we will be taking a walk around the local area identifying spots of
land that could do with a bit more greenery!
As it’s a local area walk you don’t need to send in a permission slip.
Different classes are going on different days, weather dependent.
What we will be doing in school
English –
We read the Lorax in class last week, now
we will write letters to the Bar-ba-loots
and Swomee Swams to persuade them to
come back now that the Truffula trees
have grown back.
Maths –
This week we are returning to shapes! 2D
and 3D. Looking at and remembering how
many sides and corners 2D shapes have.
How many edges, vertices and faces 3D
shapes have.
Geography
As above- the local area walk and looking
for potential areas to put “anywhere
gardens” and thinking about who we
might need to get permission from.
How you can help at home
Look at how letters are presented and their layout.
Have a discussion with your child how to use persuasive language,
such as I can, I should, you should, and give good reasons why the
person should persuade you to change their mind.
Maybe see if your child can persuade you to let them have an extra
treat of some kind if they are able to change your mind!
Look at everyday objects around you. Count the faces of the shapes,
how many vertices does it have (where corners meet on a cube for
instance)?
What 2D shapes can you see in the 3D shapes. E.g. the toothpaste
box (cuboid) has 2 squares and 4 rectangles.
Try this website for a selection of worksheets and PowerPoints etc.

Are there any areas that are looking run down near where you live or
on your journey to school?
Who might you need to ask (accompanied by an adult of course!)?
Why do we need to ask permission?
Phonics
Teachers will tailor the specific sounds
revisited this week, to individual class
needs.
Words of the week
These are high frequency words that we’ll
be highlighting for the children during the
week across different lessons, such as
Phonics, Handwriting and English
Dictation.
This week’s words are from the year 2 list;
Find, kind, mind, behind, because
Look towards the centre of the reading records and make sure they
know ALL of the sounds (cover up pictures for more of a challenge).
With some children this may mean taking a step back a little as they
read so fluently, they have almost forgotten how to use phonics well.
We are revising all the sounds up to and including phase 5.
Try the Obb and Bob game!

You should practise reading and memorising the spellings of these
words at home. Can your child put them into a sentence or two?
