Carroll County Farm Bureau NEWSLETTER Food for Thought! THE FARMER The king may rule o’er land and sea, The lord may live right royally, The soldier ride in pomp and pride, The sailor roam o’er ocean wide; But this or that, whate’er befall, The farmer he must feed them all. The writer thinks, the poet sings, The craftsmen fashion wondrous things, The doctor heals, the lawyer pleads, The miner follows the precious leads; But this or that, whate’er befall, The farmer he must feed them all. The merchant he may buy and sell, The teacher do his duty well; But men may toil through busy days, Or men may stroll through pleasant ways; From king to beggar, whate’er befall, The farmer he must feed them all. The farmer’s trade is one of worth; He’s partner with the sky and earth, He’s partner with the sun and rain, And no man loses for his gain; And men may rise, or men may fall, But the farmer he must feed them all. God bless the man who sows the wheat, Who finds us milk and fruit and meat; May his purse be heavy, his heart be light, His cattle and corn and all go right; God bless the seeds his hands let fall, For the farmer he must feed us all. As this is written, winter’s grip has finally lifted, or so it seems. It may take a couple of weeks to dry up enough to apply needed nutrients to fall seeded grains. Speaking of nutrients, Governor Larry Hogan along with Maryland Farm Bureau has come up with a more palatable phosphorous reduction plan for Maryland farmers who have higher phosphorous levels. Longer implementation intervals may help them transition to unfamiliar farming practices and help create more avenues for mitigating the uses a transportation of high phosphorous manure in the critical areas. We will see if this will fly with the current legislature. Some members of the Maryland legislature wanted to put into law the original draconian terms of the Phosphorous Management tool proposed by former Governor O’Malley. Agriculture is not set up for such abrupt change in practices. Such changes would impact severely on the economy of some agricultural communities in our state. We all want a healthy bay, but no one wants to lose the Poultry Industry, one of the largest aspects of Maryland Agriculture which also supports a large part of the economy in the western counties. A disturbing issue has also come to our attention. There could be a trend in some of our county high schools to discourage students from taking elective agricultural classes. This includes plans to remove support for programs like Future Farmers of America (FFA), an extracurricular activity group advised by the agriculture teacher. Recently a student from Manchester Valley High School has indicated this is the case at that school. Agriculture classes may not be high on an academic structure, but certainly are a start for further academic studies. Including advanced agriculture, along with plant and animal sciences that will be needed in a future global market. I personally feel programs like FFA help students build strong character and social skills as they interact in a healthy environment. On the political front, we will watch the outcome of the current session in Annapolis and inform our members of any legislations that may affect our agriculture community.
