Your Donations Matter
In a few short months, the Community Board of Directors and
the staff of the Pediatric Resource Center will host Harvesting
Hope, an exciting event benefiting the services of the Pediatric
Resource Center. I am excited to share how the Pediatric Resource
Center will utilize the donations for this event. We will continue
to deliver outstanding medical care and social services to abused
and neglected children throughout the region. You may be saying
to yourself, “Haven’t you been doing this for over 22 years?” In
fact, we have! We have been quietly, behind the scenes, supporting
injured children and their families through some

and neglect has increased 46%.
Many times, we are asked to examine children
whose lives have been devastated by the abusive
actions of a loved one or trusted caregiver. Often we are sharing
our concerns with the family within the first few hours of a child
abuse investigation. Many are shocked to hear our concerns. Still
others are in denial, because how could something as terrible as
child abuse happen in their loving home to their child. Sadly, it
does happen. It happens to children like Brian (not his real name),
whose parents brought him to the Pediatric Resource Center as a
mere 4-month-old child. Brian had bruising on his face and blood
coming out of his ear. Brian’s parents were in disbelief when Dr.
Kay Saving expressed her concerns about the nature of Brian’s
injuries. When Dr. Saving asked if Brian had other bruises in his
short life, Brian’s parents shared that he did indeed have bruising
in the past. The Department of Children and Family Services and
local law enforcement conducted an investigation and Brian never
was cared for by his babysitter again. To me, this is an amazing
success story! Brian is now a thriving 17-year-old doing 17-year-old

things. Brian’s family celebrates April as Child Abuse Prevention
Month by wearing blue ribbons all month. They think fondly of
the PRC and its services to abused and neglected children. They
understand that without PRC services, Brian may not be here
today. Many children are not as fortunate as Brian. We often see
children when they are admitted to the Pediatric Intensive Care
Unit with abusive head trauma or other devastating injuries. When
we review their past medical records, we see a shocking number of
missed instances of child abuse. Dr. Petrak has written an article
about sentinel injury and what the Pediatric Resource Center is
doing to help educate other medical providers identify early child
abuse injury. These trainings are supported by your donations and
are vital to the prevention of serious physical abuse and death. We
could not continue to do this life-saving service for children, like
Brian, without your support.

When Is A Bruise Not Just A Bruise?
Why Sentinel Injuries Matter
by Dr. Channing Petrak, M.D., F.A.A.P.
Once children start moving, they tend to run into things abuse and rare in infants who were not abused. There is

Unfortunately, babies can have bruises or even mouth
injuries from abuse. These injuries are termed sentinel
injuries, because they often precede more serious injuries
to the infant including serious or fatal head injury. Sentinel
injuries are often misunderstood, overlooked or ignored
by caregivers, relatives or even medical providers. A study
published in Pediatrics in March 2013 found that previous
sentinel injuries are common in infants with severe physical

for bruising was performed and the baby was discharged
home. At 6 months of age the baby reportedly fell off the
couch and hit his face, resulting in a mouth injury and facial
contusion. The baby was seen in an Emergency Department
by a medical provider and sent home. The next day the baby
was unresponsive with bruising on his face, arms, and legs.
The baby had severe brain injury, retinal bleeding, abdominal
bleeding, and 7 healing fractures. Sentinel injuries preceded
repeated and escalating violence toward this 6-month-old
boy, resulting in his death.
Being able to recognize which bruises are common from
childhood play and which bruises are concerning for
abusive injury is very important and could prevent serious
injury or fatal injury for young children and infants. The
PRC provides ongoing educational outreach to medical
providers and child protection professionals to improve
the care that abused and neglected children receive.
Spreading the message about sentinel injuries and abusive
bruises to other professionals that care for children, as well
as parents and relatives, could have a substantial impact
in the prevention of serious physical abuse of children.

In an effort to increase awareness of sentinel injuries
and abusive bruising for medical professionals, and
to improve understanding of the importance for
evaluation of these injuries, this spring the PRC
partnered with Children’s Hospital of Illinois to
provide 6 separate child abuse symposia related to
the recognition of physical abuse and sexual abuse.
Attendees included pediatricians, family practice
providers and emergency department staff from
communities near Peoria,Bloomington,Galesburg,LaSalle
and Springfield.
The lectures covered topics including common presentations of physical and
sexual abuse, medical mimics of abuse, mechanism for reporting suspected
child abuse and when and how to refer to a child abuse specialty clinic.
We hope that by improving recognition and understanding of sentinel injuries
and abusive bruising by medical professionals, we can reduce the number of
serious and sometimes fatal abusive injuries to infants and children.
Radio Ad Hopes to Prevent Abusive Head Trauma
On Tuesday, April 14, 2015, at 7:30 a.m., morning commuters
heard the startling cries of a baby over their radio station.
Listeners may have switched to another channel in an effort
to get away from the baby’s cries, only to hear the cries on
other radio stations throughout the Peoria Area. WEEK-TV
news anchor Gary Moore’s voice interrupts the child’s cries
as he says, “No matter how hard the baby cries; no matter
how tired you are; no matter how upset you become, never
shake or harm a baby.”
This innovative prevention effort was created by members of
the 2015 Peoria Area Chamber of Commerce Community
Leadership School in conjunction with PRC staff. Because
one of every four babies who are violently shaken or
impacted in this manner dies as a result of their injuries, and
survivors often have some sort of neurological long-term
injury, the stakes are high for prevention efforts. Abusive
head trauma public announcements like this one have been
used in others areas, resulting in an increased understanding
of the dangers of shaking or harming infants and young
children. Those areas also noted a decrease in abusive
head trauma cases following the radio roadblock. We
hope to experience a similar reduction in the Peoria Area.
It is only with the support from donors like you, that the
Pediatric Resource Center is able to provide innovative
programs and services for children who have experienced
abusive head trauma.

Dr. Channing Petrak accepted into
the Ray E Helfer Society
Dr. Petrak has been accepted into the Ray E. Helfer Society, an honorary society
of physicians who seek to provide leadership to enhance the prevention, diagnosis
and treatment of child abuse and neglect. In order to be accepted as a member, Dr.
Petrak had to demonstrate continued career commitment to child abuse medicine and
significant leadership in the child abuse field. Congratulations to Dr. Petrak!
Kindred Spirits for PRC
The 2nd Annual Kindred Spirits to benefit the PRC
was held August 7th at J.K. Williams Distilling. This
intimate gathering brought together the craft whiskeys
of J.K. Williams with food pairings from multiple local
businesses including Blue Duck Barbeque Tavern, Country
Club of Peoria, and Le Bakery. This event allowed those
attending to talk one-on-one with PRC staff about our
program and the growing need for PRC evaluation
services for abused and neglected children. J.K Williams
offered tours and a signature cocktail in a souvenir glass
to each attendee. Steve Meister played during the event,
offering fun entertainment while guests enjoyed the
evening. Over $1,600 was raised to help PRC continue
to provide outstanding child-centered care to abused and
neglected children. Thank you to PRC Community Board
member Kristin Williams and the staff at J.K. Williams
for creating and hosting this dynamic event for the PRC.

school, swimming and vacations;
and now, as an empty nester, I
still look forward to summer.
Unfortunately, there are many
children in our community that
would like to fast forward through summer. When school
is out, summer for them likely means no respite from their
lives full of anxiety and fear of abuse. These are the children
that the PRC staff and board are working so hard for. These
are the children that our volunteers and supporters give so

are not trying to fast forward through your summer, but
we most definitely wanted to make sure that you are aware
that our annual fall fundraising event, Harvesting Hope, is
just around the corner! Harvesting Hope will be held on
