The Jeffrey D. Clark Center for Entrepreneurship in the
Jon M. Huntsman School of Business is proud to present its
fifth annual series of distinguished speakers in entrepreneurship.
On 10 Wednesdays from January through April, prominent
entrepreneurs visit our campus to interact with and speak to
students, faculty members, business leaders, and members of the
community. The series is also broadcast to our regional campuses
across the state and posted on our website for public viewing. The
lectures are open to both students and the public free of charge.
Students can enroll in this series for course credit (mgt 3550).
At the Jeffrey D. Clark Center for Entrepreneurship, we are
committed to teach the skills of entrepreneurial leadership,
and assist with the creation, development, and growth of new
business ventures.

courses and are ready to launch a new venture or be an
entrepreneurial leader within an organization.

tyler tolson
Founder and CEO of denik
Tyler is the founder of Denik, a company
that features artwork from across the globe
on notebooks to generate funds for building
schools in impoverished countries. He started
the company in 2011 as a full-time student
at Utah State University and now works with
brands such as Nordstrom, Urban Outfitters,
Nike, Quiksilver, Roxy, TOMS Shoes, and
Nickelodeon. Denik recently finished
construction of a school in Mali, Africa and is
now raising funds for a school in Guatemala.
During his time at Utah State, Tyler served two
consecutive years as Student Body President.
He was one of three students worldwide to be
named as “Young Emerging Leader” by the
Leader to Leader Institute in New York.
Tyler’s favorite things include watching TV with
his wife, Nicole, wrestling with his kids, Norah
and Henry, and supporting Aggie athletics.

jon schmidt
co-founder of the piano guys
Jon fell in love with the piano at a very young
age. He was born to German immigrants who
gave him the gift of early education in music.
They acquainted him with the works of such
composers as Beethoven, Mozart and Chopin.
At the age of 11, he started composing his
own music.
Over the years, Jon made a living for himself
by teaching lessons, selling sheet music, doing
concerts, and selling CDs. In 2011 he partnered
with Steven Sharp Nelson, a superb cellist,
and co-founded The Piano Guys. They started
performing and making YouTube videos, which
gained them international attention. In 2012
The Piano Guys signed with Sony Masterworks
and now perform all over the world. To date,
their YouTube channel has more than 4 million
subscribers with 775 million video views.
Jon currently lives in Bountiful, Utah with his
wife, Michelle, and five children.

brian beckstead
co-founder and global vp of sales for altra
Brian, an accomplished runner and outdoor
enthusiast, started working for outdoor
specialty shops when he was 16 years old.
For more than a decade, he tested countless
products, developed trail shoes, and managed
both Runner’s Corner and Canyon Sports. His
love of running, combined with his education,
vast knowledge of the outdoor industry, and
his focus on proper running technique, led to
the creation of a revolutionary running shoe.
Brian co-founded Altra in 2009. The company
quickly grew from a backroom operation
to an established brand with international
production. In 2011 Altra was acquired by
ICON Health & Fitness.
Brian ran collegiately at Utah Valley University
and graduated with degrees in Exercise Science
and Outdoor Recreation. He currently lives in
Providence, Utah with his wife and three young
children.

robert gardiner
co-founder and ceo of grandeur peak funds
Robert is the co-founder and CEO of Grandeur
Peak Funds, an investment firm with $2.6
billion under management. He has been in the
investment management industry since 1981,
and involved in managing equity portfolios
since 1986. Prior to founding Grandeur Peak,
Robert was a Director of Wasatch Advisors
and a member of the Executive Management
Team from 1994 to 2007. During this time,
the firm grew from $20M to $11B under his
management. He has received numerous
awards and recognitions for his highly
acclaimed portfolio management skills.
Robert graduated Magna Cum Laude from the
University of Utah with a B.A. in Physics, a B.S.
in Mathematics, and minors in chemistry and
French. Robert and his wife, Susie, have five
children. Robert is an outdoor enthusiast and
has enjoyed serving as a youth leader in the
community.

Founder and chief media hacker of chamber
Travis is the Founder and Chief Media Hacker
of Chamber, a new media advertising agency
with offices in Los Angeles and Provo. His
company helped design the content strategy and
distribution campaign for “Kobe vs. Messi: The
Selfie Shootout,” which garnered 140 million
video views and was awarded the Ad
of the Decade by YouTube.
Chamber Media has also helped launch
campaigns for brands such as Yahoo, CocaCola, Amazon, LAN Airlines, TiVo, Glasses.
com, 2XU, NordicTrack, and Ken Garff.
Travis graduated from Utah State University
in 2011. He enjoys spending time with his
wife and daughter, and they are expecting
their second child. In his spare time, he goes
spearfishing near his home in Los Angeles,
California and downhill mountain biking when
he is able to escape to the mountains.

crystal maggelet

Crystal began her entrepreneurial pursuit in
1993 when she founded Crystal Inn Hotels
and Suites. In 1994 she and her husband,
Chuck, founded MacCall Management, L.L.C.
which develops and manages hotels. In 2009
Crystal became the President and CEO of
FJ Management, a company founded by her
father, Jay Call, and formerly known as Flying
J, Inc. Today, FJ Management’s wholly-owned
subsidiaries include Maverik, a 270 c-store
chain, Big West Oil, a petroleum refinery,
and TAB, an industrial loan bank.
Crystal graduated with honors with a B.S. in
Business Administration from Pepperdine
University and holds an MBA from Harvard
Business School. Recently, Utah State University
awarded Crystal an Honorary Doctorate degree
in Business. She currently serves on the National
Advisory Board of the Huntsman School.
She loves her role as a mother to her four
children and spending time with her family and
friends. Her favorite activities include running,
skiing, and traveling.

jeremy white
Founder of jj cole collections
Jeremy is a Cache Valley native. Three months
prior to graduating from Utah State University
he founded JJ Cole, a manufacturing and
distribution company of infant products
including blankets, carriers, diaper bags,
and strollers. Over the course of twelve years,
Jeremy assembled a passionate team, built a
multi-million dollar venture, expanded the
brand globally, and sold the business to a
publicly-traded company.
Jeremy is also an active angel investor and cofounder of JNivin. JNivin is devoted to assisting
entrepreneurs in all elements of growth from
early-stage financing, to sales and marketing
strategies, to hands-on mentoring.
Jeremy and his wife, Nicole, are parents to six
children. As a family they enjoy participating in
sports and traveling.

Sarah is the CEO of ENVE Composites,
a leader in the design and manufacturing of
state-of-the-art carbon fiber bicycle
components. Prior to her position at ENVE,
Sarah spent 15 years in sales, marketing, and
operational roles. She held various positions
at Fortune 500 companies including a role as
Team Leader for the $1 billion product, Zyrtec,
produced by Pfizer, one of the world’s premier
biopharmaceutical companies.
Sarah joined ENVE in 2010. Her passion for
innovation and quality, coupled with her drive
and leadership, have significantly improved the
overall growth and performance of the company.
Due to this success, she was named Utah CEO
of the year in 2014.
Sarah holds an MBA from Harvard Business
School. She is a native of Wisconsin and enjoys
hiking and biking with her husband

marshall miller
co-Founder and managing director
of gopro bomb squad
Marshall is a world-class paraglider pilot,
ski BASE jumper, and PRO-rated skydiver.
He travels the world in search of new and
unique places to take to the skies. He picked
up a paraglider for the first time in 1999 and
discovered his life’s purpose: flying. As an aerial
enthusiast with an infectious obsession with
the sky, Marshall is most at home aloft. He is
entirely dedicated to pushing the boundaries of
mountain sports and bringing the talent out in
the athletes around him.
Some of Marshall’s more recent achievements
include taking third in the Red Bull Wings over
Bear Lake Acro Paragliding Competition, and
racking up over a million views of the viral
video “Superior Speed Fly,” which he shot
and edited.
In addition to his athletic pursuits, Marshall
holds a B.S. in
Business Finance from the
University of Utah. He is a dedicated family
man with a beautiful wife and two children.

Founder of MediConnect Global
Founder and Managing Partner of Rees Capital
Amy is the Founder and Managing Partner
of REES Capital, a mentoring and angel
investing firm. Amy is also an author and
serves as a weekly contributor to Forbes
and the Huffington Post. Prior to founding
REES Capital, Amy was the founder and
CEO of MediConnect Global, a leader in
medical record retrieval and management
and one of the largest health information
exchanges in the country. Under Amy’s
leadership, MediConnect grew over 1500
percent. In 2012 she sold the company to
Verisk Analytics for over $377 million. Amy
also recently founded the IPOP Foundation,
a charity focused on helping educate and
mentor entrepreneurs.
brad oldroyd
Founder and CEO of TeamONE Management Group
Brad is founder of TeamOne Management.
Founded in 1997, the company has come to
own, develop, and manage convenience stores
and proprietary restaurants throughout Utah.
In 2008 Brad began working with Jimmy
John’s Gourmet Sandwiches to franchise
the restaurants across the Wasatch Front.
Through Brad’s experience working with
franchises and his management companies,
he has developed skills in strategic
planning, market analysis, and management
recruitment. He actively shares these skills
with entrepreneurs through his roles in the
Clark Center for Entrepreneurship’s Founders
Board. Brad holds a B.S. in Marketing from
Utah State University and an MBA from the
University of Utah.

Former cfo of dreyer’s grand ice cream, inc.
Paul spent the first five years of his business
career as Director of Planning and later Vice
President of Finance and Administration
for one of the divisions of Saga Corporation.
Subsequently, he served for 17 years as the
Chief Financial Officer for Dreyer’s Grand Ice
Cream, Inc., a publicly-held company. Along
with the other members of the executive
team, Paul led the business from $48 million
to $1 billion in revenues. He became the
President and CFO of Hooked on Phonics
for the final seven years of his career. Paul
received a B.S. in Economics from BYU
and an MBA from the Stanford University
Business School.

Steve is a founding partner of Millrock
Capital. He has successfully developed
residential and commercial properties valued
at more than $150 million during his career.
Steve is the Founder and former President of
American International Systems, a leading
technology systems integrator and client
service center with locations throughout
the United States. Steve is an angel investor
who is interested in investing for reasons
that go beyond pure monetary return. These
include wanting to keep abreast of current
developments in a particular business
arena and mentoring another generation of
