7. Describe the site of the village of West Pennard (54 38).
West Pennard is on the lower (west and north western) slopes of Pennard Hill. The hill
would have provided some shelter from east and south east winds and would have been
more heavily wooded in the past – providing fuel and building materials. It is a dry point
site, away from the risk of flooding, at 33 metres above sea level. There is easy access
to the fertile soils of the Somerset Levels. The village also serves as a minor route
node.

Teaching notes
This activity requires either internet access or a class set of map extracts of the Glastonbury and
West Pennard area. It is suitable as a short test/plenary but also as a revision activity.
A PDF of Ordnance Survey 1:50,000 map symbols are available to download at
http://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/docs/legends/50k-raster-legend.pdf. These are also
available to download as a flashcards at http://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/educationresearch/teaching-resources/map-symbol-flashcards.html.
It is possible students will have knowledge of the area from the Glastonbury Festival. However,
this is held at Worthy Farm, south of Pilton, approximately 8 km east of Glastonbury, at grid
reference ST 593 400
