end its rebellion against the Union by January 1.

PurposeAn Act to aid in the construction of a railroad and telegraph line from the
Missouri river to the Pacific ocean, and to secure to the government the use
of the same for postal, military, and other purposes.
InducementsLand Grants to Railroads:
200 feet R.O.W. on both sides of railroad
10 square miles of land for every 1 mile of track(5 alternate sections on each side)
Government Bonds:
30 year bonds at 6% - Paid back after RR in operation and from sale of land
From 1850-1871, the railroads received more than 175
million acres of public land - an area larger than Texas.
