Etiquette To avoid confusion for families that are new to ballet, and as a reminder for everyone else, general ballet etiquette is outlined below. This will allow for safe, enjoyable dancing for all. ◦ ◦ ◦ ◦ ◦ ◦ ◦ ◦ ◦ ◦ All students are expected to attend classes regularly and on time. Students entering class late can be at risk of injuring themselves and may be asked to sit down and observe. Please do not speak to the teacher about your child between classes. Nobody appreciates classes that start and finish late, or are cut short. The Director may be approached outside class times, or contacted by email or phone. Students must be picked up straight after their lesson has finished unless otherwise arranged, supervision of children is not possible. Absolutely no gum is allowed on the premises. For the safety of all students please remove all excess clothing, jewellery and watches. The correct attire should be worn at all times. It is understandable when younger students are settling into classes that having a parent close by can be an important part of instilling confidence in your child. Once your child is settled we ask that you abide by our viewing policy. To encourage correct technique, ballet students need to wear their hair in a bun. Jazz, modern and tap students must have hair pulled back from face, preferably in a ponytail – no headbands please. Leave all valuables and money at home. We cannot be responsible for lost items. Accidents do happen. Please do not allow children to run in the foyer or the studios before classes commence. Younger students are not to enter a studio unless a teacher is present. How To Do a Ballet Bun Start with a high, firm ponytail and then twist hair and wrap around, securing with a few pins. Place a few hairnets over the bun and secure with many more pins – ten or so should do for shorter hair, more for longer hair. Short hair may require a hair product to keep in place. Long fringes should be pinned back. Please no headbands, they distract children and often fall off. Finish with a flower ribbon in any of the SCIPA colours, black, white or coral (available from SCIPA). Please do not send your child to ballet class without their hair in a ballet bun!
