Contemporary South India – A study trip for MA students
A DAAD-funded trip organized by the Centre for Modern Indian Studies (CeMIS) at the University of
Göttingen / 15 – 25 February 2017

CeMIS postdoc Dr. Gajendran Ayyathurai will lead a ten-day excursion to Tamil Nadu in South India. The
trip will include workshops with MA students at Madras University in Chennai, at Pondicherry University,
and at Madurai Kamaraj University in Madurai. In addition to the academic events, students will visit a
village and some of the most important cultural and religious sites in the region, thereby learning more
about South Indian cultural, religious, social, and political life. The trip has been designed to help
students develop a better understanding of Tamil Nadu and to foster academic and social exchange. A
detailed program will be available at the beginning of January.
The excursion will be offered in the module SK.MIS.3 (Excursion to India); participants will be required to
attend a compulsory preparation seminar at CeMIS at 6pm on Monday 16 January and complete an
ungraded assessment on return. They will receive 6 Credits for completing the course (1 SWS).
Participants will receive a travel allowance of 550€ plus a 45€/day allowance for accommodation, food,
and travel inside Tamil Nadu. These allowances should cover most of the costs.
Applications are open to master students enrolled at the University of Göttingen. Preferential treatment
will be given to:
1. Students enrolled in the CeMIS MA program
2. Students who have taken or are taking courses at CeMIS
3. Students from social sciences, humanities and economics with an active interest in (South) India
