TEMPERATURE
ANNUAL MEAN AIR TEMPERATURES
Annual mean air temperatures were on or
above their Long-Term Average (LTA 19802010) in parts of Southwest, West, Midlands
and North. The first six months of 2013 along
with November recorded variable or below
Long-Term Average (LTA) temperatures. The
coldest conditions (compared to LTA) were in
March with the station at Ballyhaise, Co Cavan,
reporting a difference from LTA of nearly 4.0°C. The warmest conditions (compared to
LTA) were in July, where differences from average were much as 3.5°C at Elphin, Co
Roscommon. Annual mean air temperatures
values (at stations) ranged from 8.7°C at both
Slieve Bloom Mtns (Nealstown), Co Laois and
Knock Airport, Co Mayo to 11.0°C at both
Valentia Observatory, Co Kerry and Sherkin
Island, Co Cork. The differences from LTA for
annual temperatures (recorded at stations)
ranged from -0.4°C at both Ballyhaise, Co
Cavan and Castleconnell, Co Limerick to 0.5°C
at Derrygreenagh, Co Offaly.

MONTHLY OVERVIEW
January: Mean temperatures were variable
with above LTA temperatures in most parts of
the West, Southwest and South. Differences
from LTA ranged from around -0.5°C to just
above 0.5°C.
February: Almost all mean temperatures were
below their LTA. Deviations from LTA were
highest in the coastal areas in the East, South
and Northwest ranging from over -1.0°C to
just under 0.5°C.
March: Mean temperatures were well below
their LTA everywhere, with differences from
average greatest in the East and Midlands.
Most differences were between -3.0°C and
-4.0°C.
April: Mean temperatures were below their
LTA everywhere. Deviations from average were
greatest in the Northwest, West and Midlands
as much as -2.0°C.

July: Mean temperatures were well-above
average everywhere, with differences from LTA
nearly as much as 3.5°C.
August: Mean temperatures were near or
above average everywhere, with differences
from average ranging from just below 0°C to
around 1.5°C
September: Nearly all mean temperatures
were on or above average with differences
from average ranging from just below 0°C to
around 1.0°C.
October: All mean temperatures were well
above average, with differences from LTA
ranging between just below 1.0°C and 3.0°C.
November: Nearly all mean temperatures
were below average, with differences from
LTAs as much as -2.0°C.
December: All mean temperatures were on or
above average with differences from LTA ranging from 0°C to 2.0°C.
SEASONAL OVERVIEW
Winter: Variable differences from seasonal
LTAs with on or above average temperatures in
areas in the western half of the country.
Deviations from LTA ranged from just above
-2.0°C to 1.0°C.
Spring: Mean temperatures were all well
below average with differences from average
ranging from -1.0°C to over -4.0°C.
Summer: Mean temperatures were on or
above their LTA with differences from average
nearly 2.0°C in the Midlands.
Autumn: Mean air temperatures were all on or
above average with deviations from average
nearly 1.0°C in parts of the West and
Northwest.
HIGHEST MAXIMUM TEMPERATURES
Most annual highest maxima were recorded
during July. The year’s highest temperature
was 31.0°C recorded at Dooks, Co Kerry on
Saturday, July 19th, the stations second
highest maximum since it opened in 1997.
LOWEST MINIMUM TEMPERATURES
Annual lowest minima were recorded at
various times, the majority on Tuesday, March
12th. The year’s lowest temperature was at
Markree, Co Sligo with -7.6°C on this date.
AIR FROST
The number of days measuring air frost
ranged from five at Sherkin Island, Co Cork to
78 days at Slieve Bloom Mtns (Nealstown), Co
Laois.
LOWEST GRASS MINIMUM
Annual lowest grass minima were recorded at
various times with the majority measured at
the end of February. The year’s lowest grass
temperature was at Straide, Co Mayo on
Tuesday, March 12th with -14.9°C, its lowest
during March since 1986.
GROUND FROST
The number of days with ground frost ranged
from 33 at both Roche’s Point and Sherkin
Island, Co Cork to 141 at Kilkenny (Greenshill)
and Horseleap, Co Offaly.

five long-term stations (Armagh Observatory,

Annual Irish air (2m) temperature difference from
Long-term Average 1961-1990, averaged over 5
years.
Annual global air surface temperature from the
HadCRUT3 dataset. HadCRUT3 is a gridded
dataset of global historical surface temperature
anomalies from the Climate Research Unit at the
University of East Anglia.

RAINFALL
ANNUAL RAINFALL
Annual rainfall totals were variable across the
country. The percentage of Long-Term Average
(LTA 1980-2010) values ranged from 72% at
Inishere, Co Galway to 117% at Riverstown
(Glenmore Upper), Co Louth with the latter,
reporting its wettest year since 2002. The
year's lowest annual rainfall was recorded at
Celbridge (Ardrass Hse), Co Kildare with
657mm, its driest year in ten years. The station
at Mullinahone (Killaghy), Co Tipperary also
had dry conditions, with its lowest annual rainfall total since 1980 with 777mm. The highest
annual accumulation in a low lying area
(region below 200m) was at Cloone Lake
(Caragh River Area), Co Kerry with 3,037mm,
its wettest year since 2002. The overall highest
rainfall accumulation was in the Cummeragh
Mtns, Co Kerry with 3,442mm.
MONTHLY OVERVIEW
January: Rainfall totals were variable with
percentage of LTA values from 60% in the
Southwest to over 210% in the East.
February: Rainfall totals were below their LTA
in parts of the West, Southwest and South.
Percentage values ranged from under 30% in
the Southwest to over 140% in the East.
March: Rainfall totals were below average
mainly in the western half of the country.
Percentage of LTA values ranged from under
20% in the Northwest to nearly 220% in the
East.
April: Rainfall was above average in the West,
Southwest and Midlands. Percentage of
average values were from above 40% in the
East to nearly 200% in the Midlands.

South. Percentage of LTA values ranged
between 30% and 200%.
July: Rainfall totals were variable with percentage of LTA values ranging from just under
40% to 190%.
SEASONAL OVERVIEW
Winter: Most stations reported above their
LTA rainfall with the exception of a few
stations mainly in the West, Southwest,
Midlands and East which reported below LTA
values. Percentage of LTA values ranged from
60% in the West to 175% in the East.
Spring: Rainfall totals were variable with
below average totals in the East and above
average totals in parts of the West and
Northwest. Rainfall LTA values ranged from
under 50% to just above 150%.
August: Most rainfall totals were below
average with a few above LTA totals in the
North and Midlands. Percentage of LTA values
ranged from under 50% to 125%.
Summer: Seasonal rainfall totals were variable
with lowest percentage of LTAs in the West
and East and highest LTAs in the South and
Midlands. Percentage of LTA values ranged
from around 50% to just above 110%.
September: Most monthly rainfall totals were
below average, with parts of the East, South
and North reporting above average values.
Percentage of LTA values were between 20%
and 150%.
Autumn: Rainfall totals were variable with
below average rainfall mainly in the southern
half of the country. Percentage of LTA values
ranged from 50% to just below 130%.
October: Monthly rainfall totals were variable
with percentage of LTA values ranging from
just below 60% in the North to nearly 230% in
the Midlands.
HIGHEST DAILY FALLS
The year’s highest daily rainfall in a low-lying
area (region below 200m) was on Thursday,
March 21st at Kilsheelan, Co Tipperary with
74 mm, while Glenmacnass, Co Wicklow
recorded the overall highest annual daily
rainfall on the same day with 99 mm.
November: Nearly all monthly rainfall totals
were below average, with isolated areas in
the North and Southwest reporting above
average values. Percentage of LTA values
ranged from below 20% to around 125%.
December: Rainfall totals were variable, with
the majority of totals reporting to be well
above average. Percentage of LTA values
ranged from around 70% to just above 250%.
RAIN DAYS, WET DAYS AND
VERY WET DAYS
Rain days (days with 0.2 mm or more of
rainfall) were mainly below average with
above average values in the Southwest and
West. The number of rain days ranged from
159 at Portlaw (Ballyvallican), Co Waterford to
284 at Pettigo (Lough Derg), Co Donegal.

Wet days (days with 1.0 mm or more of
rainfall) were mainly below average in the
Midlands, Southeast and West with above
average values mainly in the Southwest and
North. The number of wet days ranged from
116 Dublin (Glasnevin) to 224 at Fintown
(Kingarrow), Co Donegal.

RAIN DAYS
Very wet days (days with 10.0 mm or more
of rainfall) were mainly near on average with a
few scattered areas reported below average
values. The number of very wet days ranged
from 15 at Sallins (Kerdiffstown), Co Kildare to
93 at Drummin (Tawnyard), Co Mayo.

ANNUAL SUNSHINE
Annual sunshine hours were near or above
average. Percentage of Long-Term Average
(LTA 1980 to 2010) values ranged from 99% at
Casement Aerodrome to 109% at both
Ballyshannon (Cathleen’s Fall), Co Donegal and
Ashford (Cronykeery), Co Wicklow. Total annual sunshine amounts ranged from 1,192 hours
at Newport (Furnace), Co Mayo, its lowest
annual sunshine since 2002 to 1,613 hours at
Ashford (Cronykeery), Co Wicklow.
MONTHLY OVERVIEW
January: Sunshine totals were nearly all below
average. Percentage of average values ranged
from 40% to just over 100%.
February: Sunshine totals were mainly above
average with parts of the East and Southwest
reporting below average values. Percentage of
LTA values ranged from 80% to 180%.
TOTAL ANNUAL SUNSHINE HOURS

March: Sunshine totals were below their LTA
with the exception of parts of the Southwest
and West. Percentage of LTA values were from
just below 60% to above 100%.
April: Sunshine totals were on or above their
LTAs everywhere. Percentage of LTA values
ranged from 100% to over 130%.
May: Sunshine totals were on or above
average in parts of the East, Southeast and
South. Percentage of LTA values were between
70% and 120%.
June: Sunshine totals were all near or above
average everywhere. Percentage of LTA values
ranged from 95% to 130%.
July: Sunshine totals were above average
with percentage of LTA values ranging
between 130% and 175%.

SEASONAL OVERVIEW
Winter: Sunshine totals were mostly below
average with above LTA values in some Atlantic
coastal counties. Percentage of LTAs ranged
from 80% to 125%.
Spring: Sunshine totals were variable with on
or above average values in the parts of the
South, East and West. Percentage of LTA values
ranged between 85% and 110%.
Summer: Seasonal sunshine totals were all
above average. Percentage of average values
were from just over 100% in the Southwest to
just under 135% in the East.
November: Sunshine totals were variable, with
lowest percentage of LTA values in the southern half of the country. Percentage values
ranged from 85% to 120%.
Autumn: Seasonal sunshine totals were
variable ranging from 80% in the Southeast to
110% in the West.
December: Sunshine totals were below average apart from parts of the East and
Southeast. Percentage of LTA values were
below 30% in the Southwest and up to 120%
in the Northwest.
HIGHEST DAILY SUNSHINE
The year’s sunniest day was at Ballyshannon
(Cathleen’s Fall), Co Donegal on Saturday, June
8th with 16.0 hours, its sunniest day recorded
at the station since it opened in 1966.

Upper Atmosphere wind and temperature readings are made at Valentia Observatory twice
daily by a radiosonde (a balloon with instruments attached). Shown below are annual
average wind speeds and temperatures at defined pressure levels, 850, 700, 500 and 300 hPa,
corresponding approximately to heights of 1.5, 3, 5 and 10 Km.
