1. Emmanuel Macron elected next French president
 The victory caps an extraordinary rise for the 39-year-old former investment banker, who will become the country's
youngest-ever leader.
2. World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day: 8 May
World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day is an annual celebration of the principles of the International Red Cross and Red
Crescent Movement.
 This year’s theme is “Less Known Red Cross Stories”.
3. India hold festival in Egypt to mark Rabindranath Tagore's birth anniversary
India is organising a cultural festival in Egypt to mark the 156th birth anniversary of the famous Indian poet, Rabindranath
Tagore.
 Tagore Festival which is being organised by the Maulana Azad Centre for Indian Culture (MACIC), the cultural
wing of the Indian Embassy in Cairo, from May 8-12 will feature a dance show, film screening, a play and painting
competition.
 On May 8, the movie 'Kabuliwala' directed by Hemen Gupta will be screened at the Hanager Cinema, Opera House
Complex. The movie is based on a novel written by Tagore about an immigrant from Kabul who forms a bond with
a young girl in India who reminds him of his daughter in Afghanistan.
 The Tagore Festival is organised in cooperation with the Egyptian Ministry of Culture, Cairo Opera House, Cultural
Production Sector, Dancers’ Guild and the Indian Community Association in Egypt.
4. Jordan, US launch ‘Eager Lion’ military exercise
Jordan and the United States kicked off Eager Lion, an annual military exercise with about 7,400 troops from more than
20 nations taking part.
 US and Jordanian officials said the manoeuvres would include border security, cyber defence, and "command and
control" exercises, to bolster coordination in response to threats including terrorism.
5. India unanimously elected to head UN-Habitat
India has been unanimously elected as the President of the UN-Habitat, an organ of the United Nations’ Organisation
(UNO) that promotes socially and environmentally sustainable human settlements across the world, after 10 years.
 UN-Habitat reports to the United Nations General Assembly.
 Further to election, Minister of Housing & Urban Poverty Alleviation M.Venkaiah Naidu will chair the four day
meeting of the 58 member Governing Council of UN-Habitat in Nairobi, Kenya.
 Naidu will preside over the deliberations of the Governing Council of UN-Habitat for the next two years.
 Since the UN-Habitat came into being in 1978, It is only the third time that India has been elected to lead this
important organization after 2007 and 1988.
6. India, Australia bilateral naval exercise next month
India and Australia will hold their second bilateral naval exercise next month off the coast of Western Australia.
 The first-ever such exercise, called AUSINDEX, was held in September, 2015 in the Bay of Bengal.
 Australia's High Commissioner to India Harinder Sidhu, during an interaction with journalists, also emphasised that
bilateral ties have seen a "steady upward trajectory" and Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull's recent visit here has
"injected a fresh momentum" in the relationship.
7. 29th India- Indonesia Co-Ordinated Patrol (Corpat) Commences
The 29th series of India–Indonesia CORPAT is scheduled from 09 – 25 May 17 with the opening ceremony being
conducted from 09 -12 May 17 at Port Blair under the aegis of Andaman and Nicobar Command.
 The Indonesian Naval Ship KRI Sutedi Senoputra has arrived at Haddo Wharf, Port Blair to mark the commencement
of the 29th series of IND–INDO CORPAT.
 The closing ceremony of the CORPAT is scheduled at Belawan, Indonesia from 22 – 25 May 17.
8. World Migratory Bird Day: 10th May
 It aims to highlight the interdependence of people and nature, and more specifically people and migratory birds, as
they share the same planet and the same limited resources.
 The theme of WMBD 2017 is “Their Future is Our Future – A Healthy Planet for Migratory Birds and People”.
9. Bengaluru Tops List of World’s Most Affordable Tech Cities
Bengaluru has been named the world’s most affordable tech city in the new Savills Tech Cities Index.
 The Indian technology hub is the most affordable out of 22 cities that were graded on different parameters.
 The city which ranked first overall was Austin, Texas while New York ranked as the best in “business environment”.

10. Madhya Pradesh Assembly declares Narmada living entity
The Madhya Pradesh government has passed a resolution granting river Narmada the status of a living entity
 A month ago, the Uttarakhand High Court had declared Ganga, Yamuna and their tributaries living entities with the
status of a legal person.
 The living entity status will mean that the Narmada will be owner of all property and litigation for its conservation
could be initiated on the river’s behalf.
11. GSLV Successfully Launches South Asia Satellite
India's Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV-F09) successfully launched the 2230 kg South Asia Satellite
(GSAT-9) into its planned Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit (GTO).
 Launch of GSLV was its eleventh and took place from the Second Launch Pad at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre
SHAR (SDSC SHAR), Sriharikota, the spaceport of India.
 South Asia Satellite is a communication satellite built by ISRO to provide a variety of communication services over
the South Asian region. For this, it is equipped with Ku-band transponders.
12. International permaculture conference to be held in Hyderabad
Permaculture experts from around the world will attend the 13th International Permaculture Convergence (IPC) to be
held in Hyderabad from November 27 to December 2, 2017.
 More than 1,200 delegates from across the globe will attend the IPC with the theme 'Towards healthy societies'.
 It is being organised by Hyderabad-based environmental and developmental NGO Aranya Agricultural Alternatives,
the International Permaculture Convergence Council (IPCC) and Friends of IPC (FIPC).
 The primary objective of IPC 2017 is to provide Indian farmers an opportunity to get inspired and learn how their
current challenges can be solved using permaculture principles.
13. Govt declares entire Assam as 'disturbed' area
The Centre has declared the entire Assam as a "disturbed" area under the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act -- the
AFSPA -- for three more months, citing various violent activities by insurgent groups ULFA, NDFB and others.
 In a gazette notification, the Home Ministry said the entire Assam, besides bordering areas of Meghalaya, have been
declared "disturbed" under the AFSPA for three months with effect from May 3.
 Armed Forces Special Powers Acts (AFSPA), are Acts of the Parliament of India that grant special powers to the
Indian Armed Forces in what each act terms "disturbed areas".
 According to The Disturbed Areas (Special Courts) Act, 1976 once declared ‘disturbed’, the area has to maintain
status quo for a minimum of 3 months.
 The AFSPA has been continuing in Assam since November 1990.
14. Security forces conduct biggest combing operation in Kashmir since 90s
In view of growing attacks on policemen and incidents of bank robberies, a massive ''cordon and combing'' operation
had been launched by the security forces in south Kashmir’s Shopian district.
 The massive door-to-door joint search operation launched by the Army, paramilitary and J&K Police is probably the
biggest such exercise in the past 15 years in the violence-hit South Kashmir.
15. Country’s 1st bio refinery plant inaugurated in Pune
Union Minister for Road Transport and Highway Nitin Gadkari has inaugurated the country’s first bio refinery plant
which produces ethanol from variety of biomass.
 The project is situated at Rahu in Pune district.
16. Haryana govt to offer meals at subsidized rates for workers
Haryana government said it has decided to open canteens offering meals at subsidised rates to registered construction
workers under the Antyodaya Anna Yojana, at 23 locations in the state.
17. Venkiaih Naidu adopts Titarvasa village in Rajasthan
Under the Sansad Adarsh Gram Yojna, Union Urban Development Minister and Rajya Sabha member from Rajasthan,
Venkayya Naidu has adopted Titarvasa village in Jhalrapatan, Rajasthan.
18. Maha govt ties up with WHO for eradication of Rubella
Maharashtra government has tied up with World Health Organisation (WHO) for eradication of Rubella measles and will
start vaccination drive from March 2018.
 Children aged between 9 months to 15 years, will be vaccinated for Rubella under this campaign across the state.
19. Odisha to introduce boat ambulances in four districts
Odisha will introduce boat ambulance service in four districts where people face difficulties in getting health service.
 The boat ambulance service will be available in the districts of Koraput, Malkangiri, Kendrapara and Kalahandi
where people face problems in availing 108 ambulance service due to intervening large water bodies in the form of
rivers and dams disrupting road communication.
 This is part of an MoU signed between the State Government and the Ziquitza Health Care.

The Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP) and World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO)have

Calcutta HC judge CS Karnan sentenced to 6 months in jail by Supreme Court
The Supreme Court has ordered controversial sitting Calcutta High Court judge C S Karnan be immediately sent to jail
for 6 months for committing contempt of court by his scandalous remarks.
 This is the first time that a sitting judge has been sent to prison.
 Justice Karnan had levelled allegations against several judges of the Madras High Court and the apex court and
stubbornly refused to take the allegations back.
Railways to acquire EoTT system to run trains without guards
The Indian Railways will float global tenders worth over Rs 100 crore for acquiring sophisticated equipment to run 1,000
trains without guards.
 The End of Train Telemetry (EoTT) equipment is used to establish communication between the locomotive driver
and the last wagon of the train to ensure that the train is running with all coaches/wagons as a complete unit.
 The equipment is designed to do the guard’s job by giving indication to the loco driver in case of parting of coaches
or wagons from the rear side of the train.
 Each set of EoTT device is estimated to cost approximately Rs10 lakh.
Supreme Court will go paperless from July 3
PM Narendra Modi and Chief Justice J S Khehar launched Integrated Court Management Information System scheme
for complete digitisation of litigation in all courts, which in the first phase promises paperless filing of appeals in the
Supreme Court from July 3.
 Justice Khehar said the idea of court records digitisation came to him immediately after taking oath as CJI on
receiving a letter from law minister Ravi Shankar Prasad, who had pointed out that the government had sanctioned
Rs 2,130 crore for the e-court mission mode project for 2016-17.
 Under Integrated Court Management Information System, once a petition was filed in a court, there was no need to
replicate the paper work before each appellate court.
Rajnath proposes ‘Samadhan’ for Naxal violence
Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh addressed at the meeting of the chief ministers of Left-wing-extremism (LWE)affected states.
 The Home Minister coined an acronym to counter Naxal violence —“SAMADHAN”— with “S” for Smart
leadership; “A” for Aggressive Strategy; “M” for motivation and training; “A” for actionable intelligence; “D” for
dashboard-based KPIs (key performance indicators) and KRAs (key result areas); “H” for harnessing technology;
“A” for Action plan for each theatre and “N” for no access to financing.
DIPAM launches online investor facilitation platform
Keen on creating more awareness about the forthcoming disinvestment issues, the Finance Ministry has set up an Investor
Facilitation Platform that will provide information about stocks of public sector units.
 Set up by the Department of Investment and Public Asset Management (DIPAM), the platform will be an interactive
forum for all stakeholders, including investors, investment banks, law firms, public sector units and administrative
ministries that are involved in stake sales.
 Developed and maintained by PRIME Database, all users will have to register on the platform, which will then be
authorised by DIPAM.
Government sets up task force to compute timely data on employment
Government has set up a high-level task force to compute timely data on employment in the country, a move that will go
a long way to help government frame policies and take steps that can create jobs in the country.
 The task force has been created under the chairmanship of Aayog's vice chairman Arvind Panagariya with labour
secretary Sathiyavathy, secretary statistics T.C.A. Ananth, Pulak Ghosh of NITI Aayog and Manish Sabharwal as
members.

The Commission has added another feather to its cap with the launch of National Contact Centre with a toll-free No.
1800111950.
 Now any citizen from any part of the country can call on the toll-free in English or Hindi with any query or complaint
at any time of the day. Callers can enquire on subjects such as elections, voting dates, EPIC, electoral roll, online
registration etc. and lodge a complaint by simply dialing in to the toll free no.
 The National Contact Centre is operated on a National Grievance Redressal System Software.
Union Agriculture Minister launch e-Krishi Samvad, an online interface
Radha Mohan Singh, Union Minister for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, launched e-Krishi Samvad at Krishi Bhawan.
 Singh informed that the e-Krishi Samvad is internet-based interface and is a unique platform that will provide direct
and effective solutions to the problems faced by farmers and stakeholders in the agriculture sector.
 Union Agriculture Minister said that people can directly connect to the ICAR website and get the appropriate
solutions from the subject matter specialists and institutes through web or SMS.
 Stakeholders can upload photographs related to diseases of the crops, animals or fishes for diagnostics and remedial
measures instantly from the specialists.

31. NITI Aayog to partner Uttar Pradesh for holistic development
In a marked departure from the past practices and keeping in mind the spirit of co-operative federalism, a high level
delegation led by NITI Vice Chairman, Dr. Arvind Panagariya held day long deliberations in Lucknow on developmental
challenges before Uttar Pradesh.
 The delegation met UP CM Yogi Adityanath along with seniors Ministers and officials of the state government and
it was agreed that NITI would partner with UP in areas such as doubling the farmers’ income, livelihood
opportunities, enterprise,, investment and growth in the State, among others.
32. National Technology Day: 11th May
On 11 May 1998, India conducted a series of nuclear tests in the Pohkran, Rajasthan.
 The tests were successful and since that day India has had drastic breakthroughs in the field of technology and science
like ‘Chandrayan’ and the launch of 104 satellites with one rocket.
33. India plans to replace Maitri with a new permanent research station
India has decided to replace the Maitri research station in Antarctica with a new one in the next three to four years.
 The country is also drafting laws to safeguard its interest in Antarctica and is poised to expand its research activity
in the coldest continent.
 India does not have laws for Antarctica and is currently governed by international laws.

34. Facebook, Airtel launch Express Wi-Fi in India
Social media giant Facebook has partnered with country's largest telecom player Airtel to deploy 20,000 internet hotspots
through Facebook's Express Wi-Fi service in India. These hotspots will be installed by the company in the coming few
months.
 Express Wi-Fi is part of Facebook's global initiative to spread internet connectivity.
 It is currently operational in five countries-India, Kenya, Tanzania, Nigeria and Indonesia.
 Facebook started testing the service in 2015 and has nearly 700 internet hotspots already deployed across the four
Indian states of Uttarakhand, Gujarat, Rajasthan and Meghalaya.
35. India opens small arms manufacturing unit in MP in a joint venture with Israel
Strengthening defence ties, India has opened its first private small arms manufacturing plant at Malanpur, Madhya
Pradesh in a joint venture with Israel.
 The JV company, Punj Lloyd Raksha Systems Pvt Ltd, will manufacture small arms in the plant for the Indian defence
forces and also for exports.
36. India to grow at 7.7% in 2018-19: IMF
India’s growth is expected to rebound to 7.2% in the 2017-18 fiscal and 7.7% in 2018-19 after disruptions caused by
demonetisation, the IMF said.
37. Jharkhand government partners with Oracle to boost IT infrastructure
In a bid to ramp up its IT infrastructure, the Jharkhand government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with
US-based technology major Oracle to enhance delivery of services to citizens as well as make the State more attractive
for startups.
 The Jharkhand CM also asked Oracle to explore the option of opening a state-of-the-art software development centre
in the State.
38. India to grow 7.5% next year on higher infra spending, says UN
The Indian economy will grow 7.5 per cent next year by virtue of consumption revival and higher infrastructure spending,
says a report by the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP).
 For 2017, India's economic growth is projected stable at 7.1 per cent before catapulting to 7.5 per cent going into the
next year, the regional development arm of the the United Nations said.
 While, the Manila-headquartered Asian Development Bank sees the growth jumping to 7.4 per cent in 2017-18 and
7.6 per cent in the next.
39. RBI restricts loss making IDBI Bank from hiring, opening branches
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has initiated 'prompt corrective action' on IDBI Bank which will restrict bank from
hiring, opening branches and giving big ticket loans.
 The directions from the RBI is aimed at ensuring that the bank takes measures to cut down its losses by reducing
expenses and recovering problem loans.
 The bank had suffered historic loss of Rs 2,255 crore in the December quarter 2016 as it had to make huge provisions
for bad loans.
 The 'prompt corrective action' is triggered when a bank's bad loan is above 6%, it reports losses for two consecutive
years and it falls short of minimum capital prescribed by the regulator.

 The State government entered into the MoC with the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship, Iowa
State, to promote research and development in science, agriculture and life sciences.
41. Sebi allows subscription to MF schemes through e-wallets
Securities markets regulator Sebi on 8 May permitted subscription to mutual fund (MF) schemes through e-wallets.
 "With an objective to promote digitalisation, MFs/AMCs (mutual funds/asset management companies) can accept
investment by an investor through e-wallets, prepaid payment instruments (PPIs)," Sebi said in a circular.
 According to Sebi's guidelines, investors can invest up to Rs.50,000 per MF per financial year through e-wallets.
 A mutual fund is a professionally-managed investment scheme, usually run by an asset management company that
brings together a group of people and invests their money in stocks, bonds and other securities.
 All the mutual funds are registered with SEBI.
42. LIC HFL launches ‘Griha Siddhi’
India’s premier housing financing company has announced launch of its new home loan product ‘Griha Siddhi’.
 Griha Siddhi loans are customized home loan products that are offered for construction / purchase of house or flat
and repairs/renovation to the existing properties.
 Loans are offered for a maximum tenure of 30 years or retirement age in case of salaried employees and for other
borrowers, the maximum term is up to 25 years.
 Under this plan, the company has created a special segment for women borrowers for loans up to Rs.25 lakh at special
interest rates of 8.35% p.a.
 For other borrowers, the interest rate will be charged at 8.40% up to Rs.25 lakh and for loans up to Rs.1 crore, the
interest rate will be 8.50% p.a.

Senior bureaucrat Sushil Chandra was given one-year extension till May 2018 as chairman of the Central Board of Direct
Taxes (CBDT).
 This is the first time that a CBDT chief has been given an extension beyond the set tenure.
 The Central Board of Direct Taxes is a statutory authority functioning under the Central Board of Revenue Act, 1963.
 The CBDT is headed by a chairman and can have a maximum of six members.
46. Venu Rajamony appointed India’s Ambassador to Netherlands
Press Secretary to President Pranab Mukherjee and senior diplomat Venu Rajamony has been appointed India’s
Ambassador to the Netherlands.
 Rajamony will also be India’s Permanent Representative to the Organisation for Prevention of Chemical Weapons

 The decision to make Olive Ridley as mascot of the event was taken at the first governing body meeting chaired by

Justice Leila Seth, the first woman judge of Delhi High Court, passed away after a brief illness at her home in Uttar Pradesh's
Noida. She was 86.
 Seth, who broke many a glass ceiling in the legal field, was the first woman to have topped the London Bar exam, first
woman judge of the Delhi High Court and also the first woman chief justice of a state high court (Himachal Pradesh).
