Why do we study social studies? Social studies is not just
history, but a mixture of four different topics. In 7th grade, we
will be learning about all four topics: History; Culture
Geography; and Government. For this activity, you will try to
make a connection with all four of these topics in your own
unique way.
Directions for the other side:
1. In the center box, list the top three reasons to study social studies based on our
class discussion and the video you viewed yesterday.
2. As a class, we will think about what the four topics of social studies really mean . As
we review each definition, write them in the boxes for each term.
3. In the History box, think of a time period or a moment that you wish you could have
lived through. In the box, draw a picture of that moment of history or time period.
a. Example: if you really like dinosaurs, draw a picture of the time
period when dinosaurs ruled the earth.
4. Do you celebrate religious holiday? Are you learning a traditional dance from your
heritage? In the Culture box, draw yourself participating in an activity that is
characteristic of your family or heritage
a. Example: If you are Irish, and are learning Irish dance – draw a
picture of your dance costume.
5. In the Geography box, draw a picture of a favorite place that you always wanted to
visit or have visited already.
a. Example: if you always wanted to visit Hawaii, draw a picture of
Hawaii.
6. In the Government box, create a symbol or illustration to represent the perfect
government.
a. Example: if you think having a King and Queen to rule over
America would be a good idea, draw an illustration showing a
King and Queen ruling over us.
