Putting It Together
In a past issue of Little Nuggets we gave you the audition experience. But,
what happens when the auditions are over and it’s time to start putting the show
together? Let’s visit our production of “Bus Stop” and find out!
While every production and director is different, most start with a read through.
This is usually the first time the cast is together and it is their first time to hear
each other as a total cast. It is just as it sounds—
sounds—the cast reads through the
script from beginning to end. It gives everyone, including the director, a chance
to give voice to all the characters as a cohesive unit. Even though it’s usually a
read with no stopping, it’s the first step towards the development of the
characters and show.

Next comes blocking. Blocking is the process of setting basic stage movement.
The director instructs the actors where to move on stage at specific times. It is
literally the building block of the visual aspect of the show. Blocking is usually
done with scripts in hand so the actors can make notes. In the beginning stages
of blocking, the movement can be very rudimentary. The finesse will be added
later. Blocking allows the director to physically see what he envisioned. During
blocking, movements may be changed and altered. That’s why you’ll almost
always see actors with pencils and erasers in hand!

After the blocking is completed, the polishing touches begin to be added.
This is the step where actors begin using their props, develop their characters
further and begin adding “business”. Business is the actions the actors will
make while onstage. This could be anything from standing there silently to
making a sandwich, eating that sandwich, or reacting to other characters.
Everything you see on stage has been planned out and rehearsed multiple
times so each performance is technically the same. But, the goal is to make
each action look unrehearsed and spontaneous.

Next comes the technical rehearsals. It is exactly as it sounds.
rehearsals are set aside for all technical aspects of the show.
Page

These
In these
rehearsals lights and sound are usually added. These rehearsals can be long
and sometimes tedious, but are extremely important to the show. In a technical
rehearsal, the same page of the script may be rehearsed multiple times until the
cues are smooth and flawless. This rehearsal is also where set changes are
usually rehearsed.
Near the end of the rehearsal process, Jewel Box Theatre celebrates with
the “Director’s Sneak”. The Sneak is an evening where volunteers provide a
meal to the cast and crew for all their hard work. Many Sneaks are themed
around the show. For “Bus Stop” there were gingham tablecloths and a
special “diner menu” of fried chicken with all the fixings!

Finally, dress rehearsals are here. A dress rehearsal puts all aspects of the
show together – costumes, makeup, props, lights, sound etc. These rehearsals
are usually run without stopping, just like a regular show. It gives the director a
final chance to see the completed show and to make any last minute changes
that may be necessary. At Jewel Box, our dress rehearsals are also benefit
performances. This gives the actors and crew a chance to perform before a live
audience prior to opening night.
And then the moment arrives where all the hard work pays off...

The Director’s
Chair
Angela Prock
1. South Pacific premiered almost 70 years ago on Broadway. Why do
you think it's still such a popular, relevant show?
It's Rodgers and Hammerstein at their best. Beautiful music and a story that
still teaches us something even today.
2. It seems you're directing a cast of thousands in this show. Well, not
literally, but still quite a few. What are the challenges of such a large
cast in the Jewel Box space?
Just making sure that they don't stand in the way so that the audience can see
the picture the cast sees.
3. What performer (living or dead) do you wish you could see live and
is there a particular role you wish you could see them in?
Angela Lansbury in Sweeney Todd
4. If you could perform on stage with any actor, who would it be and
why?
Julie Andrews
5. What is your absolute favorite Broadway Cast recording?
Side Show the Musical
6. Describe your philosophy of life in a bumper sticker.
Breathe in the Moments

7. What Broadway Musical would you like to see made into a current
movie musical and who is your dream cast?
In the Heights. The original cast. They were perfect.
8. What appealed to you the most about "South Pacific"?
I was raised on Rodgers and Hammerstein and South Pacific has always been
near and dear to my heart since the first I performed in it here at the Jewel
Box.
9. You're having a dinner party and can invite three guests. Who would
they be and why would they be your choice?
Julie Andrews
Denzel Washington
Carrie Underwood
10. Why do you think live theatre continues to endure as such a popular entertainment choice?
There is nothing else like it. We are given 2 - 3 hours to transport our audience
in a raw format. No editing, no take twos. Just pure, honest moments. It's exhilarating for the performers and the audience alike.
