Officers and Trustees
W
hether you travel across the country or
prefer to stay close to your hometown,
one thing you may be no cing is the emphasis
on “Buy Local” campaigns. This is based on
one simple fact: It’s important to support businesses that support our community.
Cindy Hefner
Manager of Public Relations
The Small Business Administra on and the research firm Civic Economics es mate that dollars spent at a locally owned business stay in the
community more than three mes longer than money spent at “Big Box”
stores, headquartered far away from your hometown. This means your
community wealth is more likely to grow by shopping locally.
Consumer coopera ves, like Northeast Oklahoma Electric Coopera ve,
have known this forever. We were formed in 1938 by people in this community to serve the people that work and live in this community.
A common expression among cooperators is, “If you’ve seen one coop, you’ve seen one co-op.” While there are many similari es between
co-ops, the fact that we are controlled locally, allowing us to serve your
needs, is a cri cally important principle.
The fourth of the Seven Coopera ve Principles is: Autonomy and Independence. And that is defined as follows: Coopera ves are autonomous,
self-help organiza ons controlled by their members. If the co-op enters
into agreements with other organiza ons or raises capital from external
sources, it is done based on terms that ensure democra c control by the
members and maintain the coopera ve’s autonomy.
This will allow us to con nue to be the self-help organiza on envisioned
by the founders of the modern coopera ve movement.
In other words, for the co-op to stay a co-op it is vitally important we
stay close to you, our members, to ensure we are con nuing to respond
to your needs. This could be through increasing energy-efficiency programs, offering renewable sources of energy and con nuing our efforts
to support other local businesses, schools and civic organiza ons.
You can be sure Northeast Oklahoma Electric Coopera ve will not be
moving our opera ons to Mexico or China, as so many other corporaons do. We began right here in northeast Oklahoma, and we plan on
being here for a very long me. You can take that to the bank, or be er

Renting?
You can fight the winter chill
By Abby Berry, NRECA
A
ccording to the U.S. Census Bureau, 33 percent of Americans lease their homes.
Unfortunately, many lease agreements forbid major altera ons to rental
proper es. But don’t worry, renters! Consider using these low-cost, energy-efficient
ps from Northeast Oklahoma Electric Coopera ve to improve the efficiency of your
home this winter.
Hot savings
Hea ng the home typically makes up about 48 percent of your u lity bill. Set your
thermostat as low as is comfortable in the winter – Energy.gov recommends 68
degrees Fahrenheit to boost energy efficiency.
During the winter months, take advantage of heat from sunlight. Open draperies and
shades during the day to allow natural light to heat your home. Remember to close
them in the evenings as the temperature drops and windowpanes become chilly.
Does your home have window air condi oning units? This winter, remember to
insulate the units from the outside with a ght-fi ng cover, available at your local
home improvement center or hardware store. This keeps heated air from escaping
outside. If desired, you can remove the window unit during winter months to
prevent energy loss.
Another way to save on hea ng is to make sure your water heater is set at the
lowest comfortable se ng. Have you experienced scalding hot water when taking
a shower? If so, it's likely that your water heater is set too high – which is a waste
of energy. Older models of water tanks are o en not insulated, which can be easily
remedied by covering them with an insula ng jacket.
Bright ideas
Ligh ng is one of the easiest places to start saving energy, and savings are not strictly
limited to winter months. Try replacing a few of your most frequently used light
bulbs with ENERGY STAR-qualified lights, and save more than $65 a year in energy
costs. ENERGY STAR-qualified compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) use 75 percent
less energy and last several mes longer than incandescent light bulbs, saving money
on energy bills and replacement costs. Prac cing energy-efficient habits is another
great way to reduce energy use. Always turn off your lights when leaving a room.
Other ways to save
Leasing an older home or apartment? Odds are you have single-pane windows and old or missing caulk. Don’t let the winter chill seep
indoors! Apply caulk around window frames, sashes and door panels to combat air leaks. Also, be mindful when using electronics at home.
Unplug devices when not in use, and use smart power strips to save on energy use. To learn more ways to be energy efficient around the
home, visit www.neelectric.com or www.energy.gov.
COOPERATIVE TO BEGIN USING REMOTE SYSTEM
D
uring the last several months, Northeast Oklahoma Electric has been upgrading and replacing electric meters and related
equipment. These changes will improve the efficiency and reliability of the service provided by the coopera ve. One way
the coopera ve will experience improved efficiency is the ability to remotely connect and disconnect electric service.
The advancements mean the coopera ve can connect and disconnect service without dispatching an employee to the
site. This ability is not available on all meters at this me, but by the end of 2015, all meters on our system will have this
capability.

Holiday cooking safety
Tips for safe celebraƟons
T
he kitchen is the heart of the home. Sadly, it’s also where
two out of every five home fires start. Many home fires
occur during what’s supposed to be the happiest me of the
year – the holidays. Thanksgiving, Christmas and Christmas
Eve hold a tradi on of cooking, and safety should always
be considered in the kitchen. As we embark on the holiday
season, Northeast Oklahoma Electric Coopera ve and the
Electrical Safety Founda on Interna onal (ESFI) urge you to
use these simple safety
ps to iden fy and
correct poten al kitchen
hazards:
▪ Never leave cooking
equipment una ended,
and always remember
to turn off burners if
you have to leave the
room.
▪ Locate all appliances away from the sink.
▪ Plug counter top appliances into ground fault circuit
interrupter (GFCI)-protected outlets.
▪ Keep appliance cords away from hot surfaces like the range
or toaster.
▪ Unplug the toaster and other counter top appliances when
not in use.
▪ Be sure to turn off all
appliances when cooking is
completed.
For more important safety
ps to keep you and your
family safe this holiday
season and throughout the
year, visit www.esfi.org. 
▪ Supervise the li le ones
closely in the kitchen.
Make sure children
stay at least three feet
away from all cooking
appliances.
▪ Prevent poten al fires
by making sure your
stove top and oven
are clean and free of
grease, dust and spilled
food.
▪ Remember to clean the
exhaust hood and duct
over your stove on a
regular basis.
▪ Keep the cooking
area around the stove
and oven clear of
combus bles, such as
towels, napkins and
potholders.
▪ Always wear short or close-fi ng sleeves when cooking.
Loose clothing can catch fire.
▪ To protect from spills and burns, use the back burners and
turn the pot handles in, away from reaching hands.
The Electrical Safety FoundaƟon InternaƟonal (ESFI) is a
501(c) (3) organizaƟon dedicated exclusively to promoƟng
electrical safety in the home, school, and workplace. ESFI
proudly engages in public educaƟon campaigns throughout
the year to prevent electrical fires, injuries and fataliƟes.

what more could one want for a perfect, winter

clubhouse, with full kitchen, is wellappointed for family reunions and
corporate retreats.
For the past 10 years, the Pine Lodge crew has spent countless
hours each fall pu ng up close to a half million Christmas lights.
It takes about three weeks to get the old-style lights in place.
They flip the switch on Thanksgiving night and officially welcome
in the Christmas holiday season.
The resort invites the public

Unclaimed Dollar$ Could Be Yours
A
s a member of Northeast Oklahoma Electric Cooperative,
you are entitled to a portion of any profit made by the
company. Following approval by the cooperative’s board of
trustees, patronage capital refund checks for a percentage
of allocation accrued from 1984 were mailed in September
2013.
Only checks in the amount of $10 or more were mailed to
eligible members. Members with patronage capital accounts
less than $10 were not mailed a check. Their accounts will
continue to accumulate with each retirement. When a members’ account reaches $10 or greater, a check will be issued
during the next retirement.
it is very important for Northeast to have your current mailing
address.
Many patronage capital checks have been returned with the
address marked as undeliverable. Many because they do
not have the correct 911 address.
To help you determine if you are entitled to one of these unclaimed checks, a partial listing is included. Future issues of
the Northeast Connection may contain additional listings as
space allows, but until then visit www.neelectric.com to view
the full listing. If you see your name, please call Northeast at
(800) 256-6405, extension 9313 to claim your check.
Northeast makes every effort to ensure you receive the
patronage capital this is rightfully yours. To accomplish this,

Fiber optics sign-up deadlines approaching in four communities
B
OLT Fiber Op c Services is reminding Northeast Oklahoma
Electric Coopera ve members that the deadline to sign up
and take advantage of reduced installa on costs is nearing for the
Grove, Monkey Island, Miami and east of Vinita areas.
An opportunity for residents to receive $100 reduced installa on
will expire as follows: Grove – January 3, 2015; Monkey Island –
January 18, 2015; Miami – January 30, 2015; and east of Vinita –
February 27, 2015.
“This is just a friendly reminder,” commented Roy Green, Office
Services and Business Development Supervisor for BOLT. “We
“This applica on will help us determine which services are being
requested. It also verifies for us that all contact informa on is
correct and has not changed since the ini al sign-up.”
Green said homeowners can also use the applica on to contribute
important informa on about the property that might help
technicians streamline the installa on process.
“Knowing the loca on of exis ng conduit, for example, would be
beneficial,” he said. “If we can u lize conduit that is already in
place, we can keep crews from further disturbing property during
installa on.”
Green also explained that delays created by government review
and approval of contracts are no longer slowing the project.
“While important, this review and approval process caused
an approximate delay of eight months,” he said. “We are now
working full force to reduce this impact and make up ground that
may have been lost. Equipment is arriving almost daily and several
crews are working six and, in some cases, seven days a week.
Everything is in full swing and we are hopeful for a mild winter to
avoid any more delays.”

don’t want anyone residing in these areas to miss out on a great
opportunity for reduced installa on because they were not
informed.”
Added Green: “We will s ll have more than enough capacity for
everyone later on in the project, it will just cost more for the
installa on once this deadline expires.”
Addi onally, Green said those who have signed up for BOLT
services need to visit on-line at www.bol iber.com/rsa.html and
complete an applica on for service.
“We will need to have this service applica on completed before
a service drop can be scheduled, regardless of the phase in which
they are located,” he said.

Feeling
The holidays always open up a debate--in the bird or not. Many prefer to bake their “bready” goodness in a casserole to
reduce the chances of making loved ones and guests sick with a food-borne illness. The other side of the argument boasts
the flavor is not the same without filling the cavity of an 18-pound bird. This Rus c Bread “Stuffing” offers the best of both
worlds by providing a flavorful and safe side dish. Those ready for a slight break from tradi on might like to try the Italian Style
Dressing. It’s familiar, but packs a new flavor punch.
Rus c Bread “Stuffing”
2 pounds hearty white bread, cut into ½-inch cubes
3 pounds turkey wings, separate joints (chicken wings may be used)
2 teaspoons vegetable oil
1 pound pork sausage
4 tablespoons unsalted bu er, plus extra for baking dish
1 large onion, chopped fine
3 celery ribs, chopped fine
2 teaspoons salt
2 tablespoons minced fresh thyme leaves
2 tablespoons minced fresh sage leaves
1 teaspoon ground black pepper
2½ cups low-sodium chicken broth
3 large eggs
1 cup dried cherries
1 cup pecan halves, toasted and chopped fine
Heat oven to 250 degrees. Spread bread cubes in even layer on
rimmed baking sheets. Bake un l edges have dried but centers are
slightly moist, approximately 45 minutes, s rring several mes during
baking. Transfer cubes to large bowl and increase oven temperature
to 375 degrees.
Pierce wings in several places. Heat oil in large skillet over medium-high. Add wings in single layer and cook un l golden brown, 4
to 6 minutes. Flip wings and con nue to cook un l golden brown on
second side. Transfer wings to medium bowl and set aside.
Return skillet to medium-high heat and add sausage; brown, breaking
sausage into ½-inch pieces. Transfer sausage to paper towel–lined
plate, leaving rendered fat in skillet.
Add bu er to rendered fat in skillet over medium heat. Add onion,
celery, and ½ teaspoon salt. Cook, s rring occasionally, un l vegetables are so ened but not browned. Add thyme, sage, and pepper;
cook un l fragrant, about 30 seconds. Add 1 cup broth and bring to
simmer, using spoon to scrape browned bits from bo om of pan. Add
vegetable mixture to bowl with dried bread and toss to combine.
Use bu er to grease 13 x 9 baking dish. In medium bowl, whisk eggs,
remaining 1½ cups broth, remaining 1½ teaspoons salt, and any accumulated juices from wings un l combined. Add egg/broth mixture,
cherries, pecans, and sausage to bread mixture and gently toss to
combine; transfer to greased baking dish. Arrange wings on top of
stuffing, cover ghtly with aluminum foil. Dish will be full, so it is a good
idea to place baking dish on a rimmed baking sheet to avoid spillover and
more clean up.
Bake on lower-middle rack un l thickest part of wings registers 175
degrees on instant-read thermometer, approximately one hour. Remove
foil and remove wings; reserve for another use, such as soup. Using fork,
gently fluff stuffing. Let rest 5 minutes before serving.

3 tablespoons unsalted bu er
1 medium yellow onion, diced
2 large celery ribs, diced

1/2 cup roughly chopped fresh parsley leaves
3 large eggs, lightly beaten
3 cups low-sodium chicken broth

bread in a single layer. Toast un l dry and pale golden brown, 10 to
12 minutes. Let cool.
Lightly bu er a 13 x 9 baking dish. In a large skillet, melt bu er and
add onion and celery. Cook, s rring frequently, un l onion and celery
are so ened. Add tomatoes, olives, rosemary and red-pepper flakes
and cook, s rring, 1 minute. Transfer to a large bowl and season with
