SAILING TO BYZANTIUM: THE EASTERN ROMAN EMPIRE
After the Roman Empire fell in the West, the culture survived and flourished in the East for
hundreds of years as the storied Byzantium Empire. Byzantium began as a Greek colony, rose
to become a glorious center of wealth and luxury, and was finally conquered by the Ottoman
Turks. We’ll explore the history of Istanbul during its zenith as Constantinople, and meet such
fascinating characters as the first Christian emperor Constantine, the conqueror and lawgiver
Justinian, and his infamous empress Theodora. Get ready for a day of saints and sinners,
stunning mosaics and icons, dazzling jewelry and fashions, thrilling chariot rides and horrifying
riots. We’ll enjoy a Turkish themed lunch, then try our hands at Byzantine-inspired crafts
and games.
