Aug. 11, 2013
Larry K. Daniels 74 years of age, of Salmon,
Idaho passed away on Sunday, August 11,
2013. Funeral Services will be held at 1:00
p.m. on Thursday, August 15, 2013 at the
Salmon Elks Lodge No. 1620 with burial in the
Salmon Cemetery. Arrangements are under
the direction of the Jones & Casey Funeral
Home. If you were a friend, a relative, or an
acquaintance of Larry: You knew he was a
genuine cowboy of our time. A husband, a
father, a brother and a good respectful friend
of many. He also was a fighter with the desire
of not giving up. He fought a courageous battle
against cancer for several years. The trail
ended with his wife Nancy and family by his
side, but left many memories behind to all that
we will carry in our hearts forever. Larry's
parents were Stan & Edgarita (Crews) Daniels.
He grew up on the Daniels homestead on
Carmen Creek. He went to the Upper Carmen
Country School. At that time he was the only
one in his grade and then as a 5th grader he
went to Salmon Brooklyn School. He was ever
so grateful for Mrs. Mildred Brown and Mrs. St.
John for helping him get caught up to the 5th
grade level. In High School, he played football,
basketball and belonged to the S Club and FFA
program and cherished his friendships with his
classmates. He was his Dad's top hand
working on the ranch and also helped his Uncle
Ed Daniels over in the Big Hole at Wisdom,
Montana with haying, during the summer time.
In between the haying and irrigating he found
time to explore the hills and peaks there on
Carmen Creek with his two very close friends
Jack Ellis and Richard Ellis. He married his high
school sweetheart Nancy Criddle on May 24,
1957. He went to work for the U.S. Forest
Service at Leadore, Idaho then was transferred
to the Hughes Creek Ranger Station as head
smoke chaser. Larry missed the ranch life that
he had known growing up on Carmen Creek.
He was offered a job on the Donovan Ranch on
Horse Prairie at Grant, Montana, but then later
the family moved back to Salmon. In 1963 he
started to work for the Clark Hereford Ranch.
He worked for Bill Clark over 35 years. Bill said
of him, that he was the only man that he knew
that could make water run uphill. In about
1976 Larry and Nancy purchased some
registered Polled Herefords and started their
own herd and raised and sold bulls in the Clark
Hereford Production Sales at the Clark Ranch
several years. He enjoyed working for the
Clarks and being able to have his sons Rex and
Chris with him at work or moving cattle, etc.
He's skills were many, from working cattle,
mechanics, welding, and running big
equipment. He loved to play cards and had
special memories of playing cards with the
older generation from Carmen Creek after a
Carmen grange meeting, where he also

learned to dance. He had a great love and
respect for Mother Nature and never missed
the beauty of plowed ground, a field of hay, an
animal, a flower, a rain drop, a rainbow, tree's,
the sound of a creek, a breeze in the pines,
camping and picnics with friends and having
fish fry's. He enjoyed riding the range up
twelve mile, fishing and going to CJ Strike
twice a year with family members and meeting
new friends. He also enjoyed his hunting trips
with Don, and getting the big horn sheep,
along with many other adventures with family
or friends. In later years he ran his cattle on
the Don Olson Ranch, until his health failed
and he sold the cattle and started on another
trail. His plans in retirement had changed and
he accepted it most graciously. It is what it is,
he would say. He was happy spending time
with his sons Rex and Chris and appreciated
their help. He also appreciated his brother
Gordon, sister-in-law Evalyn, and Bonnie who
became his little sister so many years ago and
brother-in-law Bill Stricklan. The contact with
another brother-in-law Monte and sister-in-law
Caroline Criddle. The love that he received
from nieces and nephews, the visits from
friends that would stop in to say Hi and cards
from far away friends. The trail was getting
difficult, but he knew of their love for him and
often said give them my love. Larry was Beef
Leader in 4-H for the Carmen Comanche's for
many years. He belonged to the Carmen
Grange, Salmon Elks Lodge No 1620,
Cattleman Association, Elks Foundation and
the S.R.P. Club. He so enjoyed the good guys
in the card club, and always looked forward to
that event each month. He was very honored
and humbled to receive the Cattleman of the
Year in 2008. He is survived by wife Nancy G.
