Trade in Early Greece
The Minoan civilization developed on Crete as early as 3000 BC and lasted
nearly 2,000 years. During that time, Minoan ships laden with trade goods
sailed all over the Aegean Sea—and perhaps further. The earliest
Mycenaean kingdoms owed much to the Minoans. The Mycenaeans traded
with the Minoans and, like them, also became great traders. The
Mycenaeans built small kingdoms. The civilization’s name comes from a
fortress that they built. After the Mycenaeans conquered the Minoans and
Crete, their trade increased. The collapse of trade contributed to the
downfall of the Mycenaean civilization.

Mycenaean trade routes.
