District Employee Changes
The District has recently hired Kenneth Foster, as Processing Center
Operator. Mr. Foster will be responsible for handling recyclable materials at
the District’s Proccessing Center, servicing recycling collections, transporting
recyclable materials between collection sites and the District’s processing center
and will perform light maintenance duties.

2010 Fall Recycling Statistics

The District conducted an Appliance Collection in O awa
Sandusky and Seneca Counties this
A total of 390 vehicles participated in the event. Materials accepted during the collection include appliances
and household objects primarily made of steel. Of the materials collected, 52,030 pounds or 26.01 tons had been
collected.

2011 Calendar Contest Winners
The OSS Solid Waste District sponsored a Calendar Designing Contest. Eligible participants included
O awa
Sandusky and Seneca thCounty
through 12th grade students. Students were encouraged to create a
design with a recycling or li er prevention theme to be included in a
calendar created b
Entries received were then judged by the Bowling Green State University’s Art Department. Twelve
designs were selected to be displayed in the calendar. The calendars were then distributed to all of the schools
and county o ces in all three counties
All of the winners received a book bag made from recycled plastic water bo les and yogurt
and a variety of art supplies
lled inside the bag
In addition
the District framed the winner
artwork in a recycled content frame. The District would like to congratulate all winners and thank those who
participated in the contest.

2010 Fall Recycling Statistics

HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE
The Fall Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Collection was held Saturday, September 11th in each
of the three counties. This collection allowed District residents (1,127 vehicles) to properly dispose of 115,188
pounds of household hazardous material. Materials that were accepted during the collection are broken down
by the following 5 categories: 1. Paint - 71,354 pounds
2. Automotive Fluids - 13,325 pounds
3. All Ba eries7,248 pounds
4. Fluorescent bulbs/PCB ballasts - 1,748 pounds
5. Other Materials - 21,477 pounds
TV’S & SMALL ELECTRONICS
Small electronics were introduced to the Television & Small Electronics Collection held this past fall on
Saturday, October 2nd. A total of 505 vehicles participated properly disposing of e-waste. District residents
recycled 1,711 units of material weighing an estimated 53,614 pounds. The following two
categories break down the material collected: 1. Televisions - 625 units received weighing 45,251 pounds
2. Electronics - 349 units received weighing 8,363 pounds
FARM TIRES
The District held the Farm Tire Collection in early September at one central location for the residents of
O awa
Sandusky and Seneca Counties
The
pre registered participants dropped o
implement, tractor, combine and other farm tires to be recycled. The farm tires weighed an
estimated 72,500 pounds. Tire sizes and the number of tires received are broken down into
the following categories:
1. Tires up to 36” - 880 tires received
2. Tires 37” - 60” - 143 tires received
3. Tires 61” & larger - 40 tires received
RESIDENTIAL TIRES

On Saturday, October 16th, 2010 the District sponsored a Residential Tire Collection in
each of the three counties. Residents had an opportunity to properly dispose of car, small
truck and racing tires during the event. Overall, 654 vehicles participated by properly
disposing of 5,013 tires to be recycled. The tires collected weighed an estimated 110,100
pounds.

The District presented a check to the Franciscan Earth
Literacy Center’s (FELC) Chairman of the Board, Mike Brown (left)
and FELC Director, Mike Conner (right). The FELC was awarded
$2,928 through the District’s Competitve Funding Grant program
(June 2010 Funding round).
The FELC purchased recycled content insulation for an
energy efficient demonstration home (in the background) made from
straw bales. The home is currently under construction on the St.
Francis campus.
