Osmosis Jones and your egg experiment What is the definition of osmosis? • The diffusion of water (from a high concentration to a low concentration) through a selectively permeable membrane. • Did you get it right? Speaking of “OSMOSIS” • Remember our egg? • Watch this video: Diffusion and Osmosis for Egg project 6315 or 1000631501 • So, let’s talk about that egg project: • Hypotonic (low) • Hypertonic(high) Egg has squirting power due to all the H2O contained inside the cell membrane (CAUSING HIGH PRESSURE ) Think of it as a balloon that is over filled and very fragile! • • • • • • Remember when you used a pin to poke a hole in your egg? It did one of three things: 1. Had squirting ---like a “spraying fountain” power or 2. Burst like an egg explosion or 3. Squirted and then burst! This was a result of the excess amount of the water that had diffused inside the membrane due to the less amount of water contained in the egg after being in the syrup (where the sugar was in more concentration than water so the water had left the egg to go out into the more sugar particle area). Remember, diffusion occurs when the higher concentration exists so the particles of the higher concentration will go out where there is less until there seems to be a balance of those particle (solutions) (balance) hypertonic hypotonic What is the difference between osmosis and diffusion? • The concept is exactly the same . . . . Higher concentration which moves to an area of lower concentration through a semipermeable membrane. . . .except. . . . Using • WATER! Here are the organs of the ____?_____ system: • • • • • • • • • Lymphatic vessels Lymph nodes Tonsils and adenoids Thymus gland Peyer’s patch Spleen WBC Bone marrow- wbc, rbc, platelets Lymph fluid • So what are these organs a part of----?????? The immune system!! What are all the parts of the immune system for? • To protect your body from germ invaders When germs enter the body your immune system will attack and kill!! Does your immune system always win? •NOPE!!!! How do you help your immune system to you? • 1. Get the right amount of sleep 8-9 hours for your age. • 2. Eat fruits, veggies, proteins like fish,---very light on the sweets. Garlic and onions are great for your immune system. • 3. Take a multivitamin each day. • 4. Get exercise—about one hour a day is good. Work up slowly if you are just beginning. • 5. Keep your stress level down—stress is very hard on your immune system if you do not control it. Yoga and listening to quiet relaxing music is good to help calm you. Why did we watch Osmosis? • To look at diffusion • And • To introduce one of the • body systems. • Hopefully it helped you • to understand some of the • workings of that system. The Cast of Osmosis Jones Osmosis Jones!! Chris Rock Thrax! Laurence Fishburn “Drix” is David Hyde Pierce Mayor Phlegm-William Shatner “Leah” is played by Brandy Norwood “Kidney Rock” played by Kid Rock “Tom Colonic” played by Ron Howard So---Osmosis Jones. . . . • Fun show based on some facts about your body and how some body systems function. • Some things were exaggerated and Thrax was a made-up germ • Take care of your body so you do NOT become unhealthy like Frank did. • Hope you enjoyed the learning on Osmosis
