DIXIE BLUEWAYS Steinhatchee Falls Dixie County is defined by the Gulf of Mexico to the west, the Steinhatchee River to the north and the historical Suwannee River to the south. It is located in Natural North Florida, along the Hidden Coast of Florida’s Big Bend region. This rural area is filled with undeveloped rivers, tributaries, and coastlines, and it has easy access to the waters of the Gulf. Suwannee River PADDLING AND BOATING The final 50 miles of the Suwannee river Wilderness Trail (SRWT) run along the Dixie Shoreline. The small community of Suwannee has the honor of being the ending point for both the SRWT and the Big Bend Saltwater Paddling Trail. Dixie is also the host to Section 6 of the Florida Circumnavigational Saltwater Paddling Trail. Take out for all three trails is Anderson Landing in Suwannee. Butler Island near Horseshoe Beach The Dixie Paddling Trail starts on the Suwannee River, following the lower part of the SRWT. Then it turns north, utilizing our county parks along the Bend Big Gulf of Mexico Coastline. The third segment turns up the Steinhatchee River, including the Steinhatchee Falls. If you are ready for some inshore fishing, we have a shoreline full of creeks, inlets, and oyster bars, which host red drum, spotted seatrout, sheepshead, and flounder, to name a few. If you enjoy venturing out, the abundant fishing grounds and new artificial reefs will provide you with great catches like grouper, seabass, snapper, and mackerel. With 3 coastal communities on the Gulf, it is easy to find an experienced fishing captain to assist you. If you are in the mood to do some underwater exploring, this is the place to be! You can dive for recreation or fishing. In addition to the pristine Dixie Artificial Reefs, there are several known diving opportunities offshore and along the Suwannee River. During Scallop season, snorkeling is the best way to gather these tasty treats. You can explored by bike, hike, or within the safe comforts of your motor vehicle. Experience Natural North Florida through the historic Florida Rails-to-Trails Nature Trail. Following the abandoned rail lines that were once an essential part of the Suwannee River Valley’s transportation, there are a multitude of activities available on the Nature Trail. These activities include bicycling, birding, hiking, horseback riding and picnicking. Complete with restroom facilities, fountains, and wheelchair accessible areas, the Nature Trail is available to everyone. Wildlife here is abundant with squirrels, deer, and many types of birds, including red-shouldered hawks, pileated woodpeckers, and barred owls.
