Dixie Trails - Dixie County

DIXIE BLUEWAYS
Steinhatchee Falls
Dixie County is defined by the Gulf of Mexico to the
west, the Steinhatchee River to the north and the
historical Suwannee River to the south. It is located
in Natural North Florida, along the Hidden Coast of
Florida’s Big Bend region. This rural area is filled with
undeveloped rivers, tributaries, and coastlines, and it
has easy access to the waters of the Gulf.

PADDLING AND BOATING
The final 50 miles of the Suwannee river Wilderness
Trail (SRWT) run along the Dixie Shoreline. The small
community of Suwannee has the honor of being the
ending point for both the SRWT and the Big Bend
Saltwater Paddling Trail. Dixie is also the host to Section
6 of the Florida Circumnavigational Saltwater Paddling
Trail. Take out for all three trails is Anderson Landing
in Suwannee.

The Dixie Paddling Trail starts on the Suwannee River,
following the lower part of the SRWT. Then it turns
north, utilizing our county parks along the Bend Big
Gulf of Mexico Coastline. The third segment turns up
the Steinhatchee River, including the Steinhatchee
Falls.

FISHING AND DIVING
Dixie County is home to some of Florida’s most pristine
artificial reefs and abundant fishing grounds. If you
are ready for some inshore fishing, we have a shoreline
full of creeks, inlets, and oyster bars, which host red
drum, spotted seatrout, sheepshead, and flounder, to
name a few. If you enjoy venturing out, the abundant
fishing grounds and new artificial reefs will provide you
with great catches like grouper, seabass, snapper, and
mackerel. With 3 coastal communities on the Gulf, it is
easy to find an experienced fishing captain to assist you.
If you are in the mood to do some underwater
exploring, this is the place to be! You can dive for
recreation or fishing. In addition to the pristine
Dixie Artificial Reefs, there are several known diving
opportunities offshore and along the Suwannee River.
During Scallop season, snorkeling is the best way to
gather these tasty treats.

Experience Natural North Florida through the historic
Florida Rails-to-Trails Nature Trail. Following the
abandoned rail lines that were once an essential part
of the Suwannee River Valley’s transportation, there
are a multitude of activities available on the Nature
Trail. These activities include bicycling, birding, hiking,
horseback riding and picnicking. Complete with
restroom facilities, fountains, and wheelchair accessible
areas, the Nature Trail is available to everyone. Wildlife
here is abundant with squirrels, deer, and many types
of birds, including red-shouldered hawks, pileated
woodpeckers, and barred owls. Come spend time
